  • Hi everyone, I am new to this group! I have always been pretty thin but never gave much thought to my diet, exercise, or overall health. Well, then I started my real adult desk job after being a student/working retail on my feet for years, plus started a new medication, and ended up gaining some weight. I started my…
  • Typically high carbs, sodium, and alcohol are what cause bloating.
  • I too have an office job which stinks for weight loss! I try to take walks after work and try to make it to the gym more often. Of course it's really all about the eating though.
  • Unfortunately since I am so petite and pretty sedentary, my maintenance calories are pretty low. Makes keeping a deficit a real pain! I am 5'3'', currently 119 lbs (goal weight is 110) and 23yo. I have a desk job and don't walk around much so I am sedentary. I maintain at around 1520ish calories, excluding exercise. I aim…
  • What is your calorie goal? How many lbs/week? Eating higher protein will help keep you feeling full longer. Personally, I have found that breakfast really is the most important meal of the day for my weight loss. Meaning that I eat low calorie for breakfast (but not skipping!) to I have a bigger "allowance" for the rest of…
  • I am very sorry for the things you have had to endure. What you have described is an eating disorder. Oftentimes when people are in bad, abusive situations like yours, everything feels out of control, so they find something they can control. Food. The thing you have to keep reminding yourself is that you got OUT of that…
  • I think it's one of those things that we all know is not a great idea, but we still do it ... Of course the level of safety depends on what the food is. Trying to eat a salad while driving is going to be near impossible, while eating an apple or a small sandwich would be more manageable. Personally, my breakfast is a…
  • Burrito bowls! You can basically make any variation that you want. I like to do brown rice, black beans, corn, shredded chicken, and then add whatever veggies/salsa you want.
  • I usually workout around 7pm (late dinner afterwards) and I eat a snack around 4:30-5pm when I get home from work. My usual snack is half of a wheat bagel thin with almond butter, or apple with peanut butter.
  • 0.6 lbs/week (assuming accurate logging). Remember, 1 lb = 3500 calories. 500 cal deficit x 7 days = 3500 or your 1 lb/week. 300 cal deficit x 7 days = 2100 or 0.6 cal/week.
  • I weigh in every morning, right when I wake up, after using the bathroom, no clothes (for the most baseline consistency). I recommend using a weight trend app - I use Happy Scale. The reason being, a lot of people freak when they see the numbers change on the scale, especially if it goes up! But it is normal to fluctuate a…
  • I don't know much about specific diets, but it seems like other posters have provided you with some resources. In general, eating more protein helps keep you feeling full for longer. If you think about it, eating a 150 cal chicken breast will be much more filling than eating 150 cal of pretzels. Also, eating more protein…
  • To stop losing weight, you need to eat at maintenance. It feels super weird at first to be eating more - you have to retrain your brain. Remember that food is fuel for your new fit bod, and all that exercise you're doing! What are your height and weight? Have you tried calculating your TDEE - this is what you need to net…
  • Came back to add - there are lots of good resources, activities, and even games geared toward kids on this site. https://www.choosemyplate.gov/kids Also, kids tend to mirror their parents whether they want to or not. Her parents might look fit & average weight - but so they have oreos in the house? Chips? Sugary cereal?…
  • To echo everyone else, a slippery slope! I don't think there's a harm in teaching her about healthy eating if she's interested but it shouldn't be shoved down her throat, and certainly not at the parents' request! If you are comfortable, maybe talk to her about it casually when she has already brought it up. Everyone here…
  • Yep ... curse auto-correct, lol
  • Looks great! Hard to believe something that sounds so creamy is only 280 cal! :)
  • This sounds delicious! I've tried a similar recipe where they were baked in the oven, but they came out soggy. Pan frying makes more sense!
  • Following along because I am having similar issues - please keep us updated as to whether the iron intake helps! Have you experienced any difficulty with concentration or short-term memory? That's where I'm at right now. I am so extremely exhausted all the time, it doesn't matter how much sleep I get (and I am a heavy…
  • Aiming for the weight I was when I started college. I'm only 23 so that really wasn't too long ago for me, a manageable goal. Of course, the number itself is all about vanity - I'll recomp when I get close, because it's more about body composition for me personally.
  • 10 lbs in 7 weeks is not slow. That's over a lb a week. Just make sure you are logging every little thing honestly and consistently, and you'll be fine. It's not healthy to lose at a fast rate (no faster than 2 lbs/month). I've only lost 8 lbs in 6 months. Now me, MY loss is painfully slow and frustrating.
  • To be fair, I have only had curry a couple of times. I actually didn't mind the taste too much - but my GI didn't like it!
  • Sounds delicious! Unfortunately we don't have a grill, but I'm sure I can sorta replicate this on the stove or in the oven.
  • Yes, it is calories in versus calories out. That being said, your are 100% right that these entries are likely not accurate, even if he is logging consistently. Plus the extra sodium doesn't help either (water weight). But his journey shouldn't just be about weight loss. It should be about overall health. Eating out so…
  • I have a Brita water bottle and I love it! It filters water as you drink, so you can use normal tap water. Mine fits about 23oz and it has little notches that mark the oz/mL on the side (similar to some Nalgene bottles).
  • Thanks guys. He takes a big protein shake for breakfast every morning and eats lots of snacks (like nuts & pretzels) throughout the day. He is looking for lunch-specific ideas though.
  • Also, consider trying a weight trend app, which means you weight in every morning and the app tracks your overall weight trend, rather than the specific number that happens to be on the scale that day. I use the app Happy Scale.
  • I find it difficult. Maybe it would be easier to be accurate if I was a beer drinker, but I like my tasty cocktails and margs! (Which are difficult to track - did they put in 1oz of tequila? 2oz? - and most are high calorie). I've switched to drinking more wine than cocktails because it is easier to track and generally…
  • We ended up doing Spanish rice w/ black beans. Yum!
  • We do that often, however I am trying to lose weight and eating low-calorie, so it can be a bit hard to find something that works for both of us! Usually I just give him a larger portion :)
