Always read amount per serving on labels. Take almonds for example. 1 oz is only 170 calories per serving but a 10 oz bag is 10 servings. If the whole bag is eaten that is a total of 1,700 calories. Calories are based off what the body needs for fuel on a daily basis for general function. If you exercise it creates a deficit because you used the calories you gained through eating to have the fuel for exercise. Resistance will help develop muscle, the more lean muscle mass you have the more calories you burn through out the day. Speed increases the heart rate to achieve the results of being in a fat burning zone. Either way you are gaining muscle or contributing to fat loss.
