This is the long and short of it. Sugar is especially implicated because along with its derivative alcohol, it overrides the body's signals to stop eating. And it is completely empty calories in many instances. This is why we have a problem now that we didn't have half a century ago. Sugar consumption has exploded in that…

I note that the World Health Organisation recommends a sugar intake of no more than 5% of calories. That would amount to 100 calories or 25 grams of sugar on a 2000 calorie intake. I note also that MFP's recommended maximum is 3 times this much. So while I've been getting down to half recommended maximum sugar intake, I'm…

Sugar consumption is falling - people are still getting fatter, [/quote] This assertion has now been completely discredited. The figures that appeared in a study (in Australia) that suggested sugar consumption was falling in fact came from an algorithm. It was found to be too difficult to quantify sugar consumption with it…

Entirely to be expected. You see there are some extremely powerful vested interests in play here, who want things to continue exactly as they are, ie huge consumption of sugar and foods containing it. They don't care how fat or sick the populace gets, it is their profits they care about. Such powerful vested interests…

Cane sugar (sucrose) is 50% glucose and 50% fructose. High fructose corn syrup is over 50% fructose (typically 55-65%). Honey is 40% fructose. The glucose in sucrose or HFCS is firstly used by the liver to produce insulin, which provides energy, and is stored in the liver and the muscles. There is a limit to how much can…

As far as is possible, I'm avoiding refined sugar. I do have some fruit though and certainly have carbs, mostly rice but some bread too (which I know contains some sugar). My daily sugar intake is currently averaging about 50-60g ,on an intake of approx 2000 calories/day. This is 12-15 teaspoons of sugar a day, for someone…

I have a Fitbit Alta HR. Although it is acceptably accurate (even a tad low perhaps which if trying to run a calorie deficit is not such a bad thing) in calculating calories when outdoor cycling, it wildly overstates walking calories. Well over 10 calories/minute which is just silly. Talking to Fitbit about it they are in…

Think about what it is doing to your health. The more you crave it, the more obvious it becomes that you really need to leave it behind.

It's a pity the software doesn't remember what its predictions were. If I go back 5 weeks to check how close the prediction was, it gives the prediction based on my weight now, rather than then. It could be worked out though, if you were so inclined.

1200-1500 sounds too low for a male weighing 250lbs. Like others above, I suspect your actual intake is considerably higher. I've averaged around 3lbs a week for three and a half months now from a start of 141kg (310lb) but I eat much closer to 2000 a day, frequently more. Try to be accurate in your calorie estimates, and…

20 lbs = 9kg. That took 33 days from 141kg. Severely curtailing my alcohol intake helped heaps in this. A good deal of it would have been fluid. By comparison in the last 33 days I've gone from (kg)127.1 to 120.8.

Whenever I've had this I've found coal tar ointment very helpful. The stinkier the better.

Milk (Skim, 150ml) on breakfast and in tea (not coffee). Tea, Lipton or Bushels, decaf after 6pm, 3 cups a day. Coffee, 1 cup in morning Water, amount varies. Metamucil Beer or cider very occasionally. 50/50 V8 and tomato juice two or three times a week. 400ml of this is 80 calories and 11g sugar (still too much sugar).

Alcohol makes me not give a damn about my calorie targets, even if I can fit it in within them, and as is well documented, it also overrides the brain's signal to stop eating, so alcohol = uncontrolled eating for me. I love booze too, and because one drink usually leads to several, I have to limit myself to having it once…

I've had shingles, it is no laughing matter. You are infectious until the blisters disappear. Most adults have had chicken pox so will be immune, but lots of kids haven't, so you really need to stay out of circulation. I had it on my face (opthalmic). The doctor sent me back to work when I still had sores on my face and I…

Poor example actually. There are two gallons, Imperial and US. An imperial gallon is 4.54 litres, whereas a US gallon is 3.8 litres. This is why metric is a much better system. Not many countries outside the US use gallons any more.

Congratulations on reaching this milestone! I started exactly 3 months ago and have lost 19.5kg. I think maybe from a higher starting weight though (141kg). I have 36kg still to go. Still losing 1.3kg per week, I'm considering increasing calorie intake to bring it down to 1kg a week or so. Being retired, I have time to…

Statistics show that obesity occurs at a much higher level in the less affluent areas (in generally affluent places like the US, UK and Australia that is).

The best I've found is ampalaya (also known as bitter melon). This is a truly unheard-of wonder food, a gift from Asia. Here in Australia it is starting to become available in fruit & veg markets but hasn't made it into supermarkets yet. Or you can grow it yourself. It will grow wherever cucumbers (to which it is related)…

I'm wondering if MFP's exercise allowances include basic metabolic rate for the time involved, which would mean the latter is counted twice. The allowances certainly seem too high.
-
Metamucil is pretty good. The sugar free one.

Silver beet (also called chard) is yummy. It is called spinach by many here in Australia because true spinach does not grow well in our warm climate. Silverbeet pie, with fetta cheese and pepper, is quite delicious indeed but full of calories I'd think.

The calorie allowances for exercise are too generous, I have found. MFP allows over 1000 calories for cycling at 19-23km/hr for 75 minutes at 123kg, whereas a heart monitor indicates just under 500. Possibly the truth is somewhere in between. You kinda work out where you stand after a while, depending how much you are…

I would suggest you try to get your sugar intake as low as possible, in addition to logging your calories honestly and as accurately as possible using MFP. Also if you are entering exercise calories, try not to eat what you earn from exercise.

You've hit 137kg and a BMI over 40 at the age of 17. Well done on losing what you have but trust me your long term challenge is going to be staying motivated and keeping it off. Some serious reading along these lines would be the order of the day I'd suggest. Also the circumstances that led to you being this weight at this…

Add me by all means. I started Apr 2 at 141kg/310lb and as of today I'm 122.6kg/270lbs. Aiming to get down to 85kg or so.

Hi. First post but I've been going since Apr 2. Started at 141kg (311lb). Male age 62 Height 186cm. Apr 17 - 136kg (300lb) 24 - 135kh (298lb) May 01 - 133kg (293lb) 08 - 131.6kg (290.1lb) 15 - 130.3kg (287.3lb) 22 - 129.5kg (285.5lb) 29 - 128.2kg (282.6lb) Jun 05 - 127.1kg (280.2lb) 12 - 126.4kg (278.7lb) 19 - 124.7kg…

Very few people in affluent countries have experienced true hunger.

13 stone, that's 83kg, and a BMI of around 29. Not too serious, but you can't let it get out of hand. I'd look at cutting out the Coke. If there are other things high in sugar in your diet you might like to curtail those as well. Don't change to fruit juice because it's just as bad. This may well be all you need to do.

Don't like 'em so don't drink 'em. Water is pretty good though. And I do like tea, tiny bit of skim milk, no sugar.
