  • There's a newer study out that acknowledges height as a driver of walking efficiency. The taller you are, the more efficient you are when walking. That said, I'm not sure if height actually changes the 3.5mph point, or if it only changes the absolute level of efficiency vs. a shorter person at that same speed.
  • or zombies.
  • I don't differentiate. I eat to my average exercise load to keep things simple and have the same amount of calories every day. It definitely helps that my workout schedule is pretty regimented and certain so I always know about how many calories I'll be burning in any given week. On the rare week where I'm not sure of my…
  • Walking 15 miles a day would drive me bonkers! I'm simply not interesting enough to keep myself entertained that long! Quick point of interest...per the below link walking faster than ~5 mph burns more calories than running 6 mph. Walking strides just aren't terribly efficient for speed in the same way that running strides…
  • Is this new or did frequency increase with your training level? Insomnia has been linked to stress hormones caused by constant overtraining but I wouldn't expect 20 mpw to be high enough to act as a trigger. I'd check the rest of your sleep hygiene first but if you suspect that your running is a factor try pulling back a…
  • No need to stop running but do less of it to start. Build gradually. Use a C25K program even if you never intend to run a 5K. Get fit for new shoes at a local running store if you haven't done so already. I enjoy running so much more than walking. If for nothing else than it's so much more efficient for calorie burns. That…
  • YMMV but in my experience it's not quite that low. I also burn about 450 calories on a 40 minute run (about 4.5 miles) and my elliptical burn is usually around 8 or 9 calories per minute or so.
  • What does "I guess it's more of a healthy thing..." mean? Is there actually a question there? If you're asking if pizza is healthy then yes, it can be. As stated above, it's carbs, fat, and protein. If asking if it's bad to eat pizza to gain weight then no, no food is inherently good or bad as far as calorie counts go.…
  • Not me. Training is too much of a commitment. I have zero desire to have to go out on 2-3 hour training runs. I have no doubt that I could actually run 26.2 miles if I wanted to put in the time to prepare but I simply don't want to. Half marathons are a nice balance for me. Long enough that they feel like a challenge but…

  • I mentally logged when I was losing and still do it in maintenance. Basically, I counted calories but didn't bother logging actual food items. I mentally kept track of calories totals by day and running variances vs target by week. It helped that my variance from target was zero for most days and that I only needed to keep…
  • or "beef". There's no way to be certain.
  • I honestly kind of like basic wheat bread. My current go-to is Vermont Bread Co. Soft Wheat. Nothing special about it but no HFCS and a standard 80 calories per slice. Supermarket bread is utility bread to me. It's pretty inoffensive but isn't anything I'd write home about. If you get good butter, the bread is almost…
  • why limit yourself to wheat bread?
  • Jerky, nuts, or dried fruit. They're light, easy to eat & portion, easy to carry, and fit easily into the seat pocket until you're ready for them.
  • They're evil is what they are. So friggin' deliciously evil.
  • Banana sushi.
  • I just made this up, I swear: Banana Tacos. 1 Flour Tortilla 1 banana 2 TBSP peanut butter shredded coconut Spread peanut butter on one side of tortilla Slice banana, place slices on top of peanut butter Sprinkle with shredded coconut Fold tortilla and eat like a taco Let me know what you think. I'm working on a variation…
  • I haven't had McDonald's in about four years but for some reason I love their plain hamburgers. Something about the perfect combination/ratio of pickle, mustard, onion, ketchup, and squishy bun. Two of those with a small fries used to be my guilty pleasure. I don't even need any of the bigger sandwiches anymore since any…
  • This would be my concern, too since fat tends to absorb flavors. I just make sure I wrapped the unused half so any cut edges are 'sealed' by the plastic wrap. No air = limited oxidation. As stated above, adding acid before wrapping extends the shelf life even more.

  • Do you mean breaded & fried pierogies or fried in butter fried? I don't think I'm down with the former simply because the latter is so good (especially when you include sauteed onions and sour cream into the mix).
  • Yes. At 157 pounds, you'd burn something in the neighborhood of 50 calories per mile walked. That said, 3-4 hours of walking per day is bonkers. I can't see how that is sustainable. You've got to learn to manage your calories by diet. As it stands now, one injury and all of that weight will come back on.
  • Bagged salads are just funky. Any bagged vegetable for that matter. They go slimy incredibly quickly because there's no air circulation to whisk away condensation. I also have a feeling that they're not terribly fresh when bagged at the factory.
  • This is what I do. I store in the fridge dry and then dunk in ice water before serving. It brings them right back.
  • Massaging kale helps because humans are actually not designed to eat kale. It's technically too tough for our digestive systems (which is why is gives some people tummy troubles). Massaging helps to pre-break down the fibers in the leaves.
  • Millions of teenagers (and their parents) would have to disagree with you on this one.
  • Note that this formula provides the GROSS calorie burn from walking. That is, the result will include calories you would have burned even if you had not taken a walk. The formula for the NET calorie burn (the extra burn resulting directly from your walk and thus the amount you can eat back) is 0.3*weight*mileage.…
  • Kitchen. You can always figure out how to get a good amount of exercise without a gym (or find a nearby gym and pay the daily fee) but there is no alternative if you don't have a kitchen.
  • Basic breadcrumbs are ~25 calories per tablespoon. Assume one ravioli will use about 10 calories worth. Eggs are 70 calories each. For simplicity, assume that one large egg will coat 7 ravioli. That's another 10 calories. Finally, assume that each ravioli will absorb about a teaspoon of oil. That's ~40 calories. So, I'd…
  • On second thought, I would support this ingredient combo on the condition that it was made like a quesadilla instead of like sushi. In other words, instead of rolling and slicing fold it over and toast in a skillet it with some butter before eating (and maybe some sugar, too).
  • If you're trying to lose weight, start conservative. I'd set yourself to moderately active and adjust from there based on your weight trends. You may qualify for very active but it won't hurt you to be a little low on calories for a short-period of time. Oddly enough, I think that 13000 steps seems a little low for…
