As many fancy mac and cheese recipes that I've played with, the king (or queen) is still a blend of Velveeta and American cheese melted into a bechamel with a pureed white onion incorporated into the sauce. When the casserole bakes, the onion-y flavor disappears and all that's left is a beautiful round sweetness to balance…

An hour of easy running for me is something like 7 miles or 800 calories give or take. What is that, like 4 or 5 donuts or a 7 on the stroopwafel scale? Oh yeah, I can easily eat that back in 60 seconds. And I would love every. single. second.

Mitochondria don't 'amplify' energy as they get more efficient. There's no multiplier effect to be had. 100 calories will always translate into 100 calories worth of effort. And the effort required to perform a given activity is always static no matter how many times you've done it. Force always equals mass times…

If you are doing keto as a way to control calories, then it might not be entirely necessary during marathon training. The miles you log will do quite a bit to net you some eating space. If doing keto for other reasons, then it still seems doable. According to various web sources, keto can actually improve endurance…

Enjoy it! 10K is an awesome distance to race. Long enough to be memorable, but not long enough that you risk getting bored. 5Ks are too short - I tend to forget them right after I run them because of all the adrenaline. HMs are fun but can sometimes turn into a slog from mile 8-11 or so (especially if the weather is bad).…

This. The formula above is way lower than most other sources, but it's correct in that it provides only the incremental calories burned by the activity. Most other sources will provide the total calorie burn over the time period, including those calories that you would have burned without doing any sort of activity.

No need to get rid of the sweet tooth, just learn to feed it in moderation. I buy bite-sized/thin-sized cookies or chocolates (tend to have in the neighborhood of 15-20 calories each) and have found that I can quell my sweet tooth with one or two pieces. Do this a couple of times per day and ultimately it only adds up to…

The michelada has become my brunch drink of choice.

I'm training for my next HM and have been trying to figure out my preferred method of fueling. Just ordered an 8-pack of salted caramel GUs to give them a shot based on this exchange. Rejoice. The troll thread has provided benefit!

Thank goodness. I had no idea what to expect when I clicked on this but I couldn't resist.

I struggle with these since the originals are pretty darn good, but Fiona Apple's version of 'Across the Universe' and Joe Cocker's version of 'With a Little Help from my Friends' are perhaps better than the originals. Also, here's a weird one since the original is also such a classic, but I prefer Phil Collins' version of…

I am addicted to avocados and chicken breast. They scratch daddy's itch so well.

If you only exercise for the weight loss and don't care about the other benefits of exercise, then it's totally up to you. Do you think it's easier for you to resist the urge to eat or to put in the effort of exercise so you don't have to resist those urges?

Why is everyone feeding the troll?

Can't help. For me, blueberry season is all about pies, cobbler, buckle, and muffins. I don't eat them any other time of the year so I make sure to get my fill in July. Edited to add - I also second freezing the berries. Put them on a sheet tray, throw in the freezer, and then bag when frozen. They keep really well and can…

If you want something closer to running, when you do your running motion focus on launching yourself off your 'landed' leg instead of just lifting your 'forward' leg. Essentially, instead of running/marching in place, you turn it into a series of one legged vertical jumps. Like jump rope without the rope. It's surprisingly…

Just prep for a normal run assuming that you're already doing enough volume to hang with the group. You might want to talk to the team coordinator about what the training program will look like so you know how much time to budget for each session and to figure out if your conditioning is up to snuff.

Thanks for the effort but CICO isn't exactly rocket science. Anybody without the intelligence to understand the basic concept either won't want to read the essay or they won't understand the analogy if they do read the essay. For the non-CICO believer crowd, pictures would probably be better.

Use the HH plans. Very practical and effective. Half marathons are great because contrary to initial appearances, they're actually very friendly distances. Long enough to be a challenge but short enough that regular people can train for them without totally disrupting their lives. If you can run 6 miles pretty regularly…

Please tell me more about why MSG is bad. I thought all of that was debunked as bad science. Bad science with racist undertones even...

Is it really making a difference to their lives and overall health though?

Basically, yes. Also, not only is each crouton actually a compressed bagel, it's a compressed bagel that's been drenched in butter and cheese.

Rob Lowe seems to be a success story. That's what he says on the Atkins' commercials anyway.

Bread isn't terrible. Even great homemade or bakery bread is 'only' about 100 calories per ounce. What kills me is fresh bread when combined with really great butter...

My favorite is when people order the veggie option because they think they're being 'healthy' but in reality, restaurants load those down with so many fats, sugars, etc. to replace the meat that vegetarian dishes often turn out to be among the highest calorie items on the menu!

I love the stuff. It's awesome on pretty much everything, but my favorites are eggs/egg sandwiches, toast with cheese, and with smoked salmon, red onion, and capers on an english muffin.

Parm crisps are awesome. Especially in tomato season (should be here in a few weeks!)

I agree with all of these save for wine. I think wine is actually a bargain calorie-wise. 600 calories per 750ml bottle? Yes please!

This. Use it to bulk out regular rice.
