I've been fairly successful just counting carbs- lost 40 pounds in 70 days. It is much easier for me to make a meal plan based on carb intake rather than calories. If I have a high carb lunch the evening meal is low carb. 125 grams of carbohydrate is my magic number.

I'm a wine maker and diabetic---- I allow myself a 5oz glass every other day. The open bottle stays fresh that way and my carbs remain in check.
