  • I tried that diet 20 years ago when I read a book called "Protein Power". Sounded good at the time, but didn't work for me. Here is what Mayo Clinic has to say https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/high-protein-diets/faq-20058207 Whatever works as long as it is healthy.
  • I too am a wine lover and used to drink 2-3 glasses a night. But obviously that no longer fits into my 1200 calorie budget. Once in awhile I am low enough after dinner to squeeze in a 4 ounce glass, but most of the time I just skip it. When I go out with friends, I do drink a few and just go over my limit that day. Usually…
  • Don't beat yourself up. In fact, feel good that you are starting over now instead of later. Like you I lost 30 lbs. and then regained it all over a 2 year period of feeling depressed, angry at myself, ambivalent, in denial, procrastinating....basically putting off the fact that I was gaining weight and needed to do…
  • I made some tonight using one of the many frozen bananas I have in my freezer (frozen before they get too ripe). I thought they were OK especially for 20 calories each (can't go wrong with chocolate chips). My 3 year old grandson liked them (and loved the dough). Thanks for the idea.
  • On the web version there is also a tab for database under food where you can look up foods and look at the nutritional data without adding to your daily diary.
  • What's wrong with a piece of chicken and coleslaw...or 1/4 # lean hamburger and coleslaw? We eat a lot of coleslaw. I make the dressing using light mayo, Greek yogurt, wine vinegar, horseradish, Stevia, salt, & pepper. Nobody ever notices it is a light dressing and loves it.
  • By the way. Read the explanation how MFP calculates the numbers under "Most Helpful Posts...General Diet and Weight Loss Help" article "Why eating too little calories is a bad idea". It explains BMR calculation, activity levels, and number of calories to lose a week very clearly.
  • Her BMR is 1587 and if she chose sedentary her NEAT burn would be 1983. It appears she chose to lose at least 1.5 lbs per week which would be 1983-750=1233. Unfortunately as we get older our BMR's drop drastically. If she wants to be more conservative on the weight loss then 1483 would be her goal for a pound a week or add…
  • I usually eat about 30%-40% carbs per day on a 1200 calorie diet. I do not add sugar and use Stevia for sweetness. I eat mostly whole foods that I cook myself. Typically 4 oz. meats etc. 2-3 meals; piece of bread or 1/2 cup of grains/pasta or potato 1-2 meals, low fat dairy 2-3 meals, vegetables cooked or raw 1-3 meals,…
  • I've promised myself to get a chin lift if I ever lose the weight and keep it off. A family trait I hate.
  • I aim for a balanced diet. However, I find I naturally eat slightly lower on carbs now that I don't eat sugar and higher on fats which I guess I just like. I try to meet my protein levels. I get messages telling me I eat too much fat but ignore them and enjoy. My calories are right on and I'm losing weight. I do check my…
  • I too set mine for sedentary because I'm retired and usually not that active, and then add back activities such as house cleaning, yard work, grocery shopping, and regular exercise up to 200-300 calories per day (difference between sedentary and lightly active for me). So far I haven't been eating back these calories…
  • I like the Jennie-O's turkey sausage for protein in the AM. Reminds me I need to get some....my store doesn't carry them.
  • I try not to cheat, but both times I've been around pizza and fried chicken I over-consume. Wine in social groups is my other biggie. I make up for it the next day or prepare by eating less ahead now.
  • Why are you torturing yourself? Crazy diets are not necessary. All you need to do is eat less than you burn. I would recalculate your numbers for your current weight after losing 20 lbs. and be sure to be realistic with activity level and amount of calories you are exercising off. If you are not losing weight after a…
  • I like a variety of fresh fruit (and variety helps balance the micronutrients), but berries are my favorite because they are so multi-functional, low in calories/sugar, and high in anti-oxidants. I freeze blueberrries and strawberries and throw them into smoothies, oatmeal, make fruit toppings to use instead of syrup, bake…
  • I love beef jerky for high protein snack or a meat for lunch. Making your own is a great idea.
  • You don't need to exercise to lose weight. All you need is a deficit in calories on a consistent basis. I'm 63 and am doing this a second time around unfortunately. Last time I lost 30 lbs in 3 1/2 months primarily with diet. I'm at one month now and 9 lbs down, so should make my goal around the same as last time. Because…
  • Great job. Stay motivated. I'm almost to my one month mark also, and going for my 10th lb. I've also lost inches as well. Good feeling isn't it? I must say it hasn't been that hard for me. I'm not hungry and eating well. I don't exercise much, but feel good when I do. Logging is once again becoming a way of life (this is…
  • Welcome. Support is here. I've only been on line a month this time (was on a couple years ago as well). I've found that I've been quite successful as long as I carefully log all my foods. All you need to do is ask a question in a forum and you'll probably get a hundred different opinions. As for personal support, look for…
  • Since snacking is my biggest problem, I do keep track of anything afternoon or evening that is not actually a meal. For me these can be healthy snacks like raw vegies/dip, fruit, nuts, beef jerky, cheese and crackers, a diet dessert cup (pudding, Jello, ice cream), smoothie, or rarely something high calorie I just have to…
  • How many pounds per week did you choose when you set your profile? Looks like you are losing about a pound and a half a week, but that will probably slow down some as you reach your goal. Two pounds a week requires a 1000 calorie per day deficit, which is challenging, but still safe. I previously lost 30 lbs. in 3 1/2…
  • I'm afraid even a week would break my losing streak and mentally set me back. Logging is a habit now and keeping to my goal a personal challenge. Previously I stopped logging once I hit a plateau and started gaining weight back not long after. I thought for sure after months of weighing and logging, that I had a pretty…
  • Usually I drink it black but for a treat I'll add cashew milk, stevia, vanilla, cinnamon, Hershey's chocolate, and a squirt of whipped cream.
  • I leave mine set to the default, however I find I often am low on carbs and slightly high on fat. I don't worry too much about it. The problem with eating too much fat is that it has 9 calories per gram whereas carbs and protein only have 4 grams. Therefore fats add up the calories more quickly.
  • I gave up sugar many years ago and never was crazy about artificial sweeteners. I use Stevia when I want a little sweetness. Unlike other artificial sweeteners it is from a plant and therefore more natural. In fact I even have a Stevia plant that I dry the leaves and use in tea.
  • I used to drink two to three glasses per evening, but have to come to realize that it is probably the biggest contributor to my being overweight. I quit buying it and therefore quit drinking it regularly. I find that when I do get around situations where others are drinking I have a hard time stopping at 4 or even 8…
  • Where are you coming up with those numbers? Did you let MFP determine your calories? I manually calculated your BMR and put you at lightly active and it gives you 2293 calories per day for your N.E.A.T burn. Even if you want to lose 2 lbs a week at 1000 calorie deficit, you are at 1293 calories. You have plenty of time to…
  • Eat healthy, balanced meals. You don't say how "low carb" you plan on doing. Some people love it, but it isn't the diet for everyone. You can lose the same amount of weight sticking by the USDA recommendations as long as you stay under your calorie limit. Typically low carb means high fat.....which is higher in calories…
  • I was out of town this week and had to guesstimate quantities and find similar foods in the data base. It is challenging and I feel for people that have to do it all the time. I also found it harder to stick to my limits with all the complementary food the hotel provided. Suddenly a piece of bacon looked like a piece of…
