Glad you all are still here, I need the encouragement to cut down wine consumption after the Pig Roast and 4gh of July family party. Who knew that summer could be so dangerous for fitness!! This is my first summer with MFP and I need to get my mind set back to where it was for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This next 20…

The Star Thrower by Loren Eiseley One of America's best writers and thinkers on nature and the history of human development. The Immense Journey is probably his best book, but The Night Country is the most thought provoking for me. Give him a read, you won't be sorry.

Blue Highways, by Least Heat Moon A reminder of how great America was BT!

I just finished Comey's book also. Well documented and a good legal brief for historians down the road. Very encouraging for those of us desperate for a return to rational government for the US and the world.

Just to freak out you Seattle people, in 1972, just out of law school, we bought a nice 2 story house on 3rd West for 23,500 dollars, a few blocks up from Seattle Pacific Universty. We sold it in 1990 for 210,000, it was converted to 3 townhouses with a current value of around 3.5 million dollars. Total, unsustainble…

Your cough seems really bad! Could that be passive aggressive?? LOL

Very unlikely result, technology mostly solves those vectors.

*kitten*! When the choice is there, prior to design and construction, an owner can make an informed choice.

How can anything be better than fresh ground coffee beans that are not diminished by foreign ingredients??

On the other hand, I am negotiating with a solar farm developer in eastern Colorado for a 160 acre site, tied into the regional grid that would pay us about 150k per year. Not sure this is the best deal we can get, and we have time to gage future improvements on the technology. This field is changing at the rate computers…

Walking is the most human activity you can choose, IMO A couple of million years evolution embodied in that activity as we came down from the trees as our security blanket. I come from a long line of walkers, and it has worked well for me. And it costs nothing!

Have any of you energy establishment apologists paid attention to what Elon Musk has done in Australia with his battery systems? Or, to any of the rapid innovation going on in battery technology? Once you have efficient battery backup, the problems with sundown, wind variation and over production become a management…

The ending of population growth will be the major problem for our current economic system, IMO. Constant expansion of production and marketing is the key to success for free market, or even managed market capitalism. It has always been obvious this model would have to ultimately fail. It is a form of social, economic…

It is fairly clear that world population will begin to decline around 2050-2060, due to birth rate declines, and could be accelerated with expanded quality education for women. Once that women realize their ability to choose and control their own lives, the population explosion is over. The big problem will be finding a…

I love that book! I especially appreciate that Hawking does not talk down to us regular folk. The real story would be based on many arcane mathematical formulas and he does a great job avoiding that, but still giving us history majors an insight into the origin and workings of our universe.

Getting good quality shoes that have a design that matches your foot is the most important step, IMO. Once you have a shoe built on a last matching your foot, buy a good quality orthotic insole (I use super feet) and then wear them as long as they are solid and supportive. I walk about 15K per day on average, and my shoes…

Just finished IQby Joe Ide. A new, modern private eye who is as much fun as the Old ones from the 50s. Dialogue from LA gangbangers and the rap artist scene, if that happens to appeals to you. Gonna start his second novel, Righteousnow.

I read Thunder Mountain by Zane Grey, then the biography of Zane Grey by Frank Gruber, while vegging at the north woods cabin in the UP last week. Terrible biography, mostly just a fluff piece by his admiring friend. Turns out that it is the only full length biography of Zane Grey!! Somebody should write a good quality…

Just finished Killers of the Flower Moon Excellent research, writing, and reading, but do not consider this book if you don't want to have your expectation of human capacity for evil to be greatly expanded.

Audible, subscription is worth every penny to me. Lots of sales and promotions, in addition to the 1 unlimited credit every month as part of the subscription. Works great for me. The library did not work for me, just another pita.

Lots of useful insights that relate to our efforts in getting more fit and more healthy, and the reality of lifestyle change. Thought provoking in many ways.
