I ate at a moderate deficit (1800) for 5 days and 800 cals on my 2 “Hank Marvin” (rhyming slang) days for about 9 months. I lost rapidly, but couldn’t exercise at the time, so effectively I threw out a lot of muscle with the fat. I wouldn’t recommend that method unless it’s supported by strength training and extra protein.…

Isn’t that the Green Tea extract that can cause liver and kidney failure?

I couldn’t work out while losing the bulk of my weight, but have been exercising exclusively at home for the 2 years I’ve been in maintenance. I just don’t “do” gyms! My weight hasn’t changed much, obviously, but my body fat has dropped from 18% to 14% in the last 12 months.

I had 4 years of chronic sciatica, due to a bulging disk at L4/5. The only exercise that didn’t make it worse was gentle walking and generally standing as much as possible. Physio therapy resulted in a split disk that put me on my back for 4 months and required 2 operations to fix Be very careful. Generally, bouts of…

I have some chocolate every day. Not much, but there’s always room for some. As a minimum, a few squares of nice 70% Lindt really hits the spot.

Im a bit of a thicko, but how? By growing taller?

Absolutely ignore them. If you read the forums here, over time you’ll see a steady stream of people who chose a deficit that was too large, so they couldn’t stick with it. They go straight for the 1200 calorie fast lane and crash in a few weeks. Pick a deficit/rate that you can live with for the foreseeable future. Slow…

Consistently eating slightly more than I burned, for about 30 years.

The first time I heard the expression it was “Health at any size” and it was used in the context of overweight people being refused medical treatments. It was a campaign to stop fat folks being discriminated against.

Dancing is my main cardio exercise. I typically average 10 calories a minute on the Fitbit (average HR in the high 120’s). I’m 6’4” and 85kg.

I don’t feel jealous, but I do worry for their health, particularly if it’s someone from my generation (old). One thing I’ve learnt over the last few years is that fast weight loss is harder to sustain (so rebounds are more likely) and risks losing muscle mass. If I’d lost my first 50lbs at half the rate I did, I’d have…

My WW scale is very sensitive to my uneven, creaky old floorboards. I have to position it direct over a floor joist and close to the wall, to get consistent readings.
-
I prefer very thin crust pizzas, so no. I’m looking for at least 800+ calories from my main meal, so a couple of slices wouldn’t be anywhere near enough.
-
I use a Fitbit and generally keep an eye on my HR while exercising. I tend to back off the intensity a bit when I hit 170 or more. I’ve no real reason/justification for this, but it feels right. I’m 55.

The problem is that some people believe certain foods are actually harmful in themselves (ie regardless of the dose). This is frankly nonsense, IMO, but it’s a viewpoint that gets reinforced by every restrictive fad diet out there.

I’m with your husband on this.

I usually find that the “health advocates” who oppose calorie counting are often selling a book, diet plan or snake oil that nobody would need if they just counted calories.

1.9g of sugar (64g bar).

Tesco sell PHD Smart bars. They’re the best tasting bars I’ve found so far. Waitrose sell Promax bars, which are like eating a paperback book.

Buy an item of clothing that’s slightly too small for you. It feels great the first time you can actually do that zip up and even better when it stops being a struggle.

My wife mastered pizza dough, or rather hand-stretching it, about a year ago and we have it twice a week. Mine usually comes out at 900 calories or so, which is perfectly manageable on days when I’m burning close to 3000.
-
Our local supermarket started stocking it, so I tried some. Absolutely foul.

I weigh every day, but only record changes. When I get 3 or 4 consecutive readings under or over my target range, I’ll change my calories. Individual readings mean nothing.

Dancing. You can start at whatever pace and duration you want. I went from 15mins of ponderous dub reggae, to 90 mins of hardcore techno over the last year. 😂

Can I ask, what the hell is “Gyro meat”?

Homemade pizza (usually comes in at around 900 calories) twice a week, here. I’ve been doing that for a year and have no trouble keeping within my calorie target. My BF was 18% last January. It’s now a hair under 14%.

The thing is, it doesn’t really matter. In use, if you’re tracking calories in and out, you soon get a feel for the margin of error. It took me no more than a few weeks to see that I gain weight if I eat more than about 40% of the extra calories (above my base MFP figure) that Fitbit “gives” me. Once I worked that out, it…

14-15% looks pretty accurate, to me. I’m a shade under 14% (by calipers) and would say I’m very slightly leaner than the picture.

I was like that for over a year after I hit my target weight. After two years of exercise, it’s mostly gone. The remaining loose skin is only visible when I do planks.
