Join the Military! Daily exercise and if you are an unmarried enlisted troop, three squares every day. If you get too fat, the First Sergeant will come down on you for getting fat. You'll also have your fitness tested a couple of times a year. In the Army, it was the APFT, consisting of a two mile run, and timed push and…

Employer supplied health coverage came into being during WWII when the US Government put wage ceilings in place so they could pay less for war materiel. Since employers couldn't offer more money for the smaller pool of workers, they started offering fringe benefits such as health coverage to attract workers. We have…

I'm kinda in that realm. I'm Mr Magoo without my contacts. Now that I'm a man of that age where my arms are too short and the lights are too dim, I've moved to monovision for my contact prescription. Don't know why I didn't do that years ago. My dominate eye is corrected for distance, my near eye, for near vision. Now if…

You mean like the protection of our precious bodily fluids, or how I learned to love the Impossible Whopper?
-
The impossible whopper protein is about as real as the American cheese used in fast food burgers. If someone will choose slice of American Process Cheese Food, it's hard to object to the beef substitute on the grounds of it not being real.

Too big, no Whopper Jr option. Costs more. It's a dollar more than the original.

And since people don't follow the guidelines, the government efforts have largely been ineffective. In some ways, the guidelines have been flawed as we had a generation or so where people were convinced fat was the enemy. The federal government played a part in this. I'm not about to put on my tin foil hat and blame big…

It was ok. I could tell the patty was different. I didn't regret the choice, but I didn't love it either. I like burgers (sadly) and I could see occasionally having one. I'd probably want a Whopper JR option to further cut down the size of the food allowance hit. I did mention to my wife I was going to get one of each at…

My thoughts are since I'm in that area, I need to give it a try....

And you prove my point, the cyclist HAS paid those taxes, just like everybody else, and has the same rights to the road as a taxpayer as anybody else. There is no special privilege afforded to the driver because he pays the taxes directly over the cyclist who paid them indirectly through the costs rolled into the goods and…

What is the benefit of mostly empty buses and trains? If employers are benefiting, send them the bill. I just find it laughable that people complain about the 50-100 miles I might ride my bike over the course of a week, all 240# of me and my bike, suggesting that the 50k miles per year the four 1.5-2 ton vehicles in my…

I burn about 5k calories in two days before exercise is considered. I'm in my mid 50s. Apparently, it's not too dangerous as 5k is what my body burns in 2, maybe 2.5 days before I even start exercising. However, I think I know where you might be coming from. I've seen some articles, warning people off hours of cardio,…

Are we sure motor fuel taxes cover the costs of the roads? Do other taxes also go into the fund? Don't I pay the motor fuel taxes of the trucks that deliver food and bicycles to the stores where I shop? It is highly unlikely a cyclist doesn't pay taxes and hasn't paid the motor fuels taxes passed on in the costs of…

It's sad when expecting people to make good choices is called targeting. I take exception with your characterization that people are being targeted. I said let people bear the responsibility of their choices. No one else is targeting them. If they are targeted by a system that holds decision makers responsible for the…

Charge for insurance based on health risk factors. If you are obese, smoke, don't exercise (probably harder to determine) then you would be subject to higher rates, even for government supplied health care. As long as we don't rate based on risk and allow the costs of higher risk behaviors transferred to the populace in…

Fifty years ago for me, we had our own chickens, grew and canned vegetables, drank well water, washed clothes with water from the cistern, etc. Heck, I made money growing and selling pumpkins and watermelon. I worked in the school cafeteria because I'd rather work for my meal than take a free/reduced price lunch. (Probably…

A century ago, people couldn't imagine the average family having so much food that obesity would be common. We've always had the obese, but as a smaller percentage of the population. Probably couldn't imagine the average Joe or Jane working in an office and having to find ways to exercise if they wanted to.

+1, after I lost 50#, seats became much harder. Funny how that happens.

Unless I read it wrong, someone suggested that he do something wrong, just unintentionally.

If some didn't do something, they certainly didn't intend to do it, did they? I don't rape women. Should I apologize on behalf of others who do? Should I expect women to apologize because my ex-wife was an unfaithful..... Of course not. I mean just because my ex-wife couldn't help falling on another man's *kitten* doesn't…

My n=1 is my fasting BG in the AM is lower if I have a bit to eat before I go to bed. So I usually have a 100 calorie measured cup of ice cream. If I don't have it, I tend to wake with a fasting BG of greater than 100 mg/dL. That little 100 calorie cup of sweet and fat doesn't negatively impact my sleep and seems to allow…

Reliant or dependent, nope. I do use it to see keep track of how I'm doing. For instance, I know I maintained 19.0 MPH on the indoor bike today for 40:46, averaged 208W for the whole time, including the warmup, and averaged 250w for the last 26:33 of the ride. Average H/R was 120 I can compare these figures to other…

Perhaps. However, unless you know he built the body that way, it's speculation, right? I'm not saying he's a result of PEDs or not. As I said, he does admit to using when he was much younger. But also said once he learned of the negatives, he stopped. So maybe he's not the best example to cite with respect to PEDs. I…

Well, it is the debate thread, so it's not unreasonable to expect that people will debate. Seems to me, the flow chart is to calculate BMI and if it's overweight or greater, (and probably underweight too) have a trained medical professional evaluate the results. Are you arguing against that? Yes I can No one is redefining…
-
Yet the CDC and suspect others say something similar, So according to the CDC it is a screening tool, but the results need interpretation. So one may initially show up as obese, but interpreting the initial findings must occur to determine if the person is actually obese. If I lost a leg, I could arrive at a “normal” BMI…

Actually Obesity is medically defined as excess body fat. BMI is a Proxy to estimate it, but isn’t perfect as it doesn’t account for people like Dwane Johnson. People conflate BMI for body fat percentage, and there is some correlation. But not all who have a BMI > 30 are actually obese. But they are certainly worth another…

Do you think he really has over 25% body fat? Obesity is having too much fat. It's not about how much you weigh, it's about how much fat you carry. To be obese, you have to carry over 25% body fat as a man, and 30% for a woman, IIRC. Are you telling me you think Dwayne Johnson carries over 25% body fat?

I am ticklish and my wife isn't. She uses that to her advantage when she can. Fortunately, I'm a better wrestler and can usually hold both her arms with one of mine :)
