  • My PCP told me that chugging large quantities of water at one sitting is not that productive as it goes straight to your bladder and then expelled. She recommends sipping my gallon of water throughout the days to improve hydration. Something to remember.
  • There are some physical tests that you can do yourself that will give you a pretty accurate measurement of your VO2Max. The Rockport test for walking. The Bruce Protocol test for treadmill. The Cooper test for running. The Bruce Protocol is used by major Hospitals in the US to access VO2Max and aerobic condition. The…
  • My everyday breakfast - the family won't try it because its green. In a high speed blender load in this order; 1 cup skim (or almond or soy) milk 1/2 cup old fashioned oats (uncooked) 1 scoop Gold Standard Chocolate protein powder 4 cups fresh Kale (load the bender up) 1 cup fruit (banana, blueberry, strawberry, mango, or…

  • Old Starting Strength technique used by High School Football players - Lift heavy compound exercises and drink a gallon of milk a day (GOMAD). It's cheap and effective and it works.
  • I started out with a compact power rack, flat bench, olympic bar, and 225lb in bumper plates for the garage during COVID. That is all I have ever needed. If you go this route I suggest buying a 15KG women's bar or a shorty bar as the standard 7' OLY bar is pretty long to use in a confined space like a garage or indoors. A…
  • I don't use them; to me they are cheating your forearms and grip strength. My grip is not the weakest point of my deadlift. Many people consider forearm/grip strength to be the best representation of overall strength. If you are walking through the forest and a tree falls on your best friend it doesn't matter what your max…
  • After years os spending a fortune on expensive brandname mattresses at those speciality mattress stores I bought a memory foam mattress from Ikea. Most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on. It cost half of those brand names and came compressed in a box that fit in the back of my SUV. Only problem was disposing of the…
  • I agree with ninerbuff that 5'11 185 is not overweight. Maybe you just need to cut 5 pounds to get rid of the beergut and love handles. If you live near a big city or a university get a BodPod measurement. It will cost you $50 but it will give you precise body composition measurements. Have a second measurement done after…
  • Thanks everyone, I will cut back my sets and increase my rest days. At my age the reason I lift is not to look like Arnold but to avoid being one of the people you see shopping at Walmart and sitting in those motorized shopping carts. I believe that strength training is the key to staying active later in life. As long as I…
  • Go Old School. Eat regular meals and drink a GOMAD (Gallon of milk a day). 2214 calories, 174g carbs, 118g fat, 114g protein, 5000mg potassium. Trust me you will bulk up. I did this back in High School to make the football team. Cost is only $2.50 a day here in the U.S.
  • I brine boneless skinless chicken breasts in salt water a few hours and then roast in a 425 oven for 25 minutes. It comes out falls apart tender and flavorful.
  • GOMAD. Drink a gallon of whole milk a day in addition to your regular meals. Its cheap and easy if you are not lactose intolerant.
  • I feel the term Calories is too generic. I consume more carbohydrates on workout days to fuel my workouts. I consume large amounts of Protein every day to fuel Muscular hypertrophy. Hypertrophy can take 48 to 72 hours after a workout so I don't skimp on protein ever.
  • I had a serious illness and was unable to exercise and just barely eat for an entire year. I had BodPod measurements before and after I lost 100 pounds and the body composition readings showed that I lost equal amounts or lean muscle mass and body fat in pounds. I have always read that if you diet and not exercise you will…
  • I didn't suggest eliminating fats from your diet completely. Only cutting (reducing) the amount of fats as they are (just as you stated) calorie dense. Most foods have fat content but foods high in fat can be reduced to limit overall calorie intake.
  • Consider weight bearing compound exercises. They exercise multiple muscle groups and also strengthen bones ligaments and tendons. They require dumbbells or a barbell but with just three exercises you can strengthen virtuially every muscle group in your body; Squat Deadlift Press For older people they also duplicate real…
  • I know bodybuilders that have a "cut" diet to get into compitition shape. The say keep all the protein to keep muscle mass and keep the carbs to fuel your workouts. Get you calorie deficit by cutting fats out of your diet.
  • That your male appendage will appear larger after weight loss.
  • I'm back up to 150Lbs, my original target weight. I still need to loose fat and gain more muscle mass but it takes a longer time at my age (60). Two years ago my barbell deadlift and back squat were both over 225lbs. Now they are both less than my 150.
  • Bodybuilders will tell you that you can't add muscle with a calorie deficit. Other fitness expert will say that if you have high body fat you can draw from those fat reserves and add muscle mass and still loose body fat. The import thing to remember is you have to consume enough protien to support muscle growth and enough…
  • Your male body part actually appears larger.
