Welcome! My best advice: don't get discouraged when you miss your goals. Setting them is half the battle, and continuing to log every day is the other half. Eventually you'll get to where you want to be. Congratulations on starting!

I love Michael Pollan's way of describing a good diet: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." (Unfortunately, the "mostly plants" category includes white rice, flour and sugar, and those are what screw me up.)

As I understand it, muscle weighs more than fat, so the scale is not going to be your best friend here. Perhaps you want to start using measurements of waist, chest, neck and limbs to track your progress.

I heard of a study involving toddlers given free access to a huge range of foods, that found they ate what they needed nutritionally. UNTIL sugary foods were added to the selection. I don't know if it's true -- never found the study.

Newbie, a little less than a week and not really steadily successful. At all. One thing I notice is that if I'm doing relatively well during the day, I find I don't want to grab that cheap treat because I'll have to log it. Any of you getting that?

Went to the Lowell Folk Festival. What fun! I got about 2 hours of walking around - good exercise -- but how in the world do you log a Laotian spring roll, Portugese codfish in a roll, Greek lamb skewer, Nigerian goat stew and peanut candy patty, and a hunk of fried dough? I just figured "2000 cals in fair food!" :D :s

Definitely weights. Muscles burn calories all the time, including when you're asleep.

I think that you can have quality and affordable together easily, but it won't be as convenient as less healthy or affordable takeout.
