Also sometimes "low fat" means tons of just pure refined sugar has been added as well so "low fat" does not necessarily indicate "low calorie."

There is nothing magic about something being fat-free. Losing/gaining/maintaining weight is all about achieving the proper balance between calories consumed vs calories expended. Whether those calories are from fat, carbs, or protein, does not matter so much for weight maintenance. That said, some people, when trying to…

Watching my dad die with dementia and diabetes. Both run pretty strongly in my family, and though there are genetic factors (probably) at play, it is also true that there are life choices I can make now that will influence my future health. Realizing no one can help the future me as much as the present me really was a wake…

I think that is very insightful. I was thinking that, paradoxically, maybe this is a way for a child to assert control in her life--making a decision about what food to eat and when, especially if it is counter to what the adults in the room approve. Although, there are probably as many reasons for secret eating as there…

This really resonates with me. Not the Slimfast part, since I have never done that, but the part about going back to old eating habits. What clicked for me was realizing, in my bones, that however I lost weight would probably have to be the same way I maintained that loss. That realization put things in focus in a very…

Booze, soda, sweetened soy milk... Now, I wish I could manage my social media time like I do my booze and sugar habits. :-(

I like keeping up with my potassium only because it is hard for me to get enough. Also, potassium-rich foods include a lot of the foods I want to increase anyway--like greens, fruit, veggies, oily seafood, dairy, etc. But I do *not* need to track micros to manage my weight.

I have felt that way in the past too, kind of like when I used to put extra money under the monopoly board and then when I most needed it, acted like I had never known it was there to start with. :-)

Trying to lose the last 10-15 lbs... But I want to take this slowly so I'm aiming for the first 7 of that 15. 31/Aug/2020 SW: 157 01/Jan/2021 GW: 150 I'll try to weigh in on Fridays.

I'm in for 75 miles this month.

Congratulations folks on all the work you have completed on your racing/running/life goals. Life seems harder these days so, dang, just having a goal is a thing. Here's my report for August: Distance completed: 101 kilometers (~62.8 miles) August race completed: https://www.huaracheturbo.com/event_loteria_run.php in a…

Excellent. You're doing great. What is your lifting routine like?

You are really doing great!

All excellent advice, especially "don't needlessly make a hard job harder."

Thanks for the recipe links, esp. the ones for southern food...

I have only a few months data but my weight has been drifting down a little lately since I have been running more, and the additional running I've been doing is on hills. Lately I have been doing about what you described--that is, trying to hit my exercise calories with enough food but if I'm hungry at night I eat a little…

^^^ Pretty much all this for me too. Setting MFP on "sedentary" and using my pedometer to calculate calories burned in excess of the sedentary setting, those are exactly the two tools I used to lose 47 pounds. Easy peasy. Now that I'm running a lot, instead of just walking, I'm having to figure out how to calculate my…

Wow such great insights from all of you. Thanks so much. Here are my takeaways... 1) As far as TDEE, I have never used that to calculate my calories, so I may try it out and see how things go. 2) I run in the southern US and it is freaking humid and hot when I run and I sweat buckets so it may be that dehydration and/or an…

Thanks! I had put Pacer on my phone but now I will look at Pedometer as well. A appreciate your help.

Oh no, not @PastorVincent! I don't participate here frequently but he made a big impact on my experience when I did. He was always one of the regulars one could count on being here to make this running community feel warm and inviting. I'll do a 10K in his memory tomorrow morning.

Thanks for listening to my frustration rant, folks. I appreciate your feedback.

It's near the bottom of my range this week. Besides my running (which I've been doing a little less than a year now) I really do sit a lot, so 1920 calories seems right to me as a sedentary person. So far, for the past 2 years, using the formula "sedentary calories + pedometer calories" has worked out OK for determining…

You know, that may be it. When I was doing just C25K, recovery may not have been as big an issue, but now I'm running 4-5 miles 4-5 days per week.

I agree. I think they all taste good together. Here is something I had recently that I really loved: tomatoes and watermelon salad. Some people make this with cheese but that can easily be omitted: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MCm-BrIXKk

I am sorry to hear about your husband. That sounds very stressful. I was never able to lose weight on a restrictive diet (meaning, by restricting certain foods or food groups) but I have found CICO much easier. Eat whatever I want, just not so much. I do give in to sugar cravings too easily so I had to just remove all that…

I weighed 202 and lost 35 lbs the first 6 months I was using MFP. Losing weight is about creating a calorie deficit and different folks go about how they do that in different ways. I just tracked my meals but ate (and still do eat) a pretty diverse array of foods. Only a qualified medical professional can prescribe…

Hang in there. Do you live with someone who is supportive? The main way I kicked my snack habit was to change my shopping habits. If it doesn't get in the house, it doesn't get eaten. Fortunately everyone in my household is on the same page. What have been your strategies so far to help you get rid of the junk food?

Greetings! Mostly a lurker, I participated more in these challenges last fall as I was finishing C25K. Then I took a 4 week break in the winter and when I got back to running I was trying to minimize my social media time... Anyway, after my first 10K in March, things pretty much shut down race-wise b/c of covid, and in…

I've lost 45 lbs eating an omnivorous, eclectic diet that is much lower in animal products than most people. I have not had beef, chicken, or pork in about a year or so; though, I do eat dairy on a regular basis and a little fish now and then. Also, looking at my diary, it looks like I eat around 250-300 grams of carbs…
