We have always been our gender— society just doesn’t think our bodies “matched” with our gender (even though they don’t have to, most people still don’t accept that fact). I was never a girl— I was a non-binary trans person who hadn’t come out yet 😄

Just so everyone knows (this is coming from someone who is non-binary trans) the right way to say it is “they’re a trans girl; someone who was assigned male at birth (AMAB) but is a girl”.
