  • Are you getting your calories from three meals a day or from meals plus snacks? Also, what time do you eat in the evening. Finally, at what speed are you cycling - how far do you cover in your twenty minutes?

  • Regarding exercise and fat, you really need energy in a form other than fat to exercise for all apart from the lightest of exercise. The harder you exercise, the higher the ratio of glycogen to fat is used. Your glycogen stores are not very big - especially in people not used to exercising. Unfortunately, once these are…

  • New friends always welcome. Will have to start pressing the "add friend" button myself.
  • A hard seat with padded shorts is better than a soft seat. When you get to longer rides then you need to ditch underwear. Underwear has seams which cause friction burns and saddle sores - they are painful and can be dangerous.
  • I know that weight fluctuates daily. I tell myself and others this. I like the graphs above showing the trend. However, do people still feel a little sad when they get on the scales and their weight is greater than yesterday - like me this morning - and there was even a good reason for today's weight gain.
  • I'm from the UK - originally from West Cumbria but moved to Sheffield half a lifetime ago.
  • Ooh, forgot to say, learn the cyclist wrist flick - if you are on a long ride and are unable to take a rest, take your hand off the handle bar and flick on down with a loose wrist. Also, do wrist rotations. It gets as natural as taking a drink after a while.
  • Without a doubt, wear gloves. They will stop blisters and may help with the numbness. Also, consider fitting bar ends so you have a different riding position. I just get the cheapest gloves - either ALDI, Decathlon or Planet X and they last me for some rides of over fourteen hours. If you don't wear gloves, are you lycrad…
  • Having just discovered this forum I would accept a friend request off any of the above. Great place to wile away the time and to get some motivation at the same time.
  • I'm with the person who said the step was probably waiting to snap. Put this behind you and look forward to continuing on your journey to a new you. Whilst the end goal may seem a long way off, remember - even a marathon starts with a single step?
  • Can I ask a personal question and ask whether you are young? I ask because, when I was about sixteen I simply couldn't put weight and muscle mass on despite weight training. As I got older it got easier though (too easy now). With regards to weight training, make sure that you are doing the exercises slowly. So, for…
  • I actually find that black caffeineated coffee will help me burn fat and lose weight. Unfortunately, I try to only have decaff coffee as I have constant ectopic heartbeats and I've found caffeine (as well as other things) can make them worse. But, when I had caffeine in the past it has had a positive effect on my weight.…

  • I'm from Sheffield in the UK.
  • In the UK, sodium is listed on labels in the form of salt but potassium isn't usually listed. I'd agree with the above poster who says that entries are often wrong. Even some of the ones with a green tick against them are incorrect. I tend to be creating my own database of foods viewable only to myself so I know that they…

  • Brilliant article. Haven't read all of it but it makes so much sense. Puts it better than I could ever say.
  • Weight does fluctuate. That's why I weigh myself every day to get the overall picture. This morning I was expecting my weight to be higher than normal as, even though my calories was under target (accounting for exercise), I had a large meal last night (Indian takeaway). So, I'm up about a pound and a half on the day…
  • Not really got into cycling this year. Usually I do about 6 - 7,000 miles a year. With the horrendous weather at the start of the year followed by lockdown my mileage so far is 474 miles for the year - I often do at least that in a month - sometimes in a week. I would get back into it but my bike is very poorly - front…
  • Wow, we're all from all corners of the world Sheffield, UK for me
  • I'd come cycling with you but Philadelphia is a little far for me - I'm from Sheffield, UK. It is great to cycle with friends. Are there any local cycling groups around your way? In the UK we have one called CTC - which covers all levels. Not sure if you have something similar.

  • C25K can be hard - especially when you get to week five or six (one week has a massive jump). I use an app called RunKeeper (free version) - it works on my phone but not on everyone's. The good thing about it is you set your own training plans - so if you can only run for five minutes but could maybe do four sessions with…
  • Good luck with the weight loss. Working from home has ruined my normally trim (yeah, right) figure. But, the fact that I'm no longer cycling to work each day has taken it's toll and the boredom of sitting in the dining room has also had an effect on my snacking. My goal is to lose 43 lbs - will take me to where the first…
  • Hi, are you weighing yourself everyday of just once a week? Also, the same time of the day? I ask this as you may find that you have daily fluctuations in your weight and when you weighed yourself initially it was on a 'low' day and when you weighed yourself a week later it was on a 'high' day. Also, if you always sit at a…
