Using MFP I plan my meal only on the day before. I have tried multiple days, but I always change. As an Italian, I don't buy 3 potatoes and 4 onions and 2 cans of tomatoes.. I look for generic things..and usually pick the lowest lol In the case of salad , 'Green Salad - Green Salad' is 25 calories for 100 grams(113g=4oz) That does the job for me..typically mostly lettuce, cucumber and some tomatoes. I'm not an expert, but to answer for today: Aussie cup is 250 grams. Half a cup of white rice ( 125 grams ) is about 470 calories. That should be enough to provide a filling meal and have leftover.
