  • I've not read any study that suggests they are harmful. I personally prefer to increase protein with real food versus a protein powder but I know vegetarians and vegans might find it more difficult than I do. For example, I prefer to have a big omelette instead of a protein shake.
  • My full body workout is the following exercises -- most of them paired in super sets: * Turkish get up * Push ups * Goblet jump squat press * Bridge press * Russian twist * One arm snatch from a squat * Curl * Tricep (skull crusher type but standing up) * Deadlift * Front raise * One arm press * Halo * Pullover in lying…
  • I have over 300 lbs of kettlebells, it's my only strength training equipment. I don't need a lot of space and the types of moves are limitless. I do wonder, however, if I will be able to build as much muscle/strength with them as I did previously with heavy barbell workouts a few years ago. In a few months when I've…
  • Not being critical because every person has different goals etc... but just keep in mind that your rate of weight loss can be accelerated significantly with activity level. I'm a 5'7' 54 year old male -- if I were using a sedentary budget to lose .5 lb per week my budget would only be slightly higher than yours: 1650.…
  • Just a week or so ago my weight stayed the same for over a week and eventually even went up 2 lbs. You know what I did to break this "plateau" ? Nothing. It's normal. This is what happened a few days later with no change in my activity level or diet.
  • When you start a new exercise plan or suddenly increase your activity level you can retain some water weight. This can last up to 3 weeks. Almost anyone can lose weight eating 1200 calories per day, so if your are accurately tracking your calorie in take you just need to give your body time to adjust to the new activity…
  • It seems like you really didn't listen to any of the advice we gave you last time. You don't gain weight because of the time of day you eat, you gain weight because you are eating at a surplus. I'm not sure what else there is for us to say at this point. The process is simple. Weigh regularly and count everything you put…
  • Like others have said, 3 days is not a meaningful sample set. Your overall weight graph is going down over a period of multiple weeks and that's all that matters. If you are going to weigh daily you'll need to understand that this happens to everyone. As for your body fat measurement scale readings, these readings also are…
  • I include the oil I use as an estimate, I just don't measure it. I use olive oil, which I'm assuming is much more calorically dense than a can of pam. I make an omelette every morning. I built my recipe for the Omelette assuming I use 1/2 tablespoon (60 calories) of olive oil. I never bothered measuring it, it was just and…
  • This is an area where the effort required isn't worth the increase in accuracy for me.
  • Lake of patience has to be one of the most common reasons for failure. The nature of our modern fast paced culture is to expect immediate results. When people try something for a week and they don't see results they get frustrated. Even if they do have early success but later see results "stall" they lose confidence, get…
  • Actually, I retract my last comment. @mrBLOB84 I looked at your diary and your calories do add up to 2401 for yesterday, so sorry. After looking at your diary below, here's some suggestions that MAY help. Fat and protein is more satiating than carbs. So, I would recommend replacing those 300 calories in bread on your…
  • @cwolfman13 at first I agreed with your post, but now EDIT I see his diary is open so I posted it and he is eating 2400 calories and it looks legit.
  • @sgt1372 I disagree that these are absolutes. A calorie burned is equal to one not eaten. The key to weight loss is the balance between CI and CO. A person can decide to balance it either way. For me personally, I find it MUCH easier to live a normal life and lose weight with exercise. If I were relegated to a sedentary…
  • You shouldn't start out trying to run a full mile. You should start out with a mix of running and walking -- for example, jog 1/4 mile, walk 1/2 mile, repeat for some distance. You should pick a pace that is slow enough for you not to be completely out of breath. Each week you can increase the distance of the run portion…
  • 1500 calories for a male your size is likely eating below your BMR. Like others have said, you are probably causing your body some undue stress. Doing this long term can cause some other more troubling side effects. The general guideline for rate of weight loss is .5% - 1% of your body weight per week. I'm 54, 5'5" and 173…
  • I'm in my mid 50s, so not quite 60 yet. Losing weight is no harder now than it was when I successfully did it 10 years ago. The reduction in our metabolism as we age is exaggerated. A 25 year old me would burn only 150 calories per day more with a sedentary lifestyle than I do at 54. In my opinion, the biggest difference…
  • If you want a second opinion on your vo2 max then you can use this calculator: https://www.omnicalculator.com/sports/vo2-max It supports multiple methods of estimation -- for you I would not use the resting heart rate.
  • A lot of people here are diminishing the importance of exercise in weight loss. I'm going to take a different perspective. I eat at maintenance and create my entire deficit (750 calories per day) with exercise and some NEAT. I don't believe exercise has to be relegated to "wiggle room" in the CICO equation. If someone has…
  • According to Apple this estimate is probably only going to work if you are waling, running or hiking. If your workouts aren't of that type, it probably isn't giving you a good measurement. Like myself and @ninerbuff have said, you should be able to judge your progress by other measures. For my runs, this is simple, I…
  • How are you measuring this ? You shouldn't need a device to tell you whether or not you are improving. If you are improving you should be able to do more, longer and/or at a higher intensity level than when you started.
  • There is a somewhat similar recent post here -- you might find some useful insight there: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10825739/how-much-exercise-a-day-to-help-build-lean-muscle-and-tone#latest
  • The difference in BMR between a 25 year old and a 45 year old 5'0 160 lbs women is only 100 calories. I'm sure my comments will be disregarded by many women, but I'm 55 and I've never had trouble losing weight as long as I tracked my food and exercise -- regardless of the source of my calories. At 45 I transitioned from…
  • The "expert consensus" is around 1 lb per month max of muscle growth under ideal circumstances. Younger people will add faster than older. Women will add slower than men. Newbies (first timers) can grow faster than long time lifters. And then the most important part, most people don't even come close to the definition of…
  • As most everyone else has said, you can't judge results on 1 week. On the meal replacement, however, my personal preference is to eat real food. Here's a comparison between one component of my daily breakfast to a popular meal replacement. Same number of calories but one is filling and the other just makes me hungry
  • The answer comes in two parts, first we have to define a real plateau and then we can discuss the CICO model. What is a real plateau Stalls or even gains that occur over short periods of time (let's say 3 weeks or less) aren't real plateaus. Fat loss isn't linear and water weight causes lots of variations in our day to day…
  • To the others that seem to be discounting this ... it is lower carb and higher in protein than pasta. There is nothing wrong with this option as long as you find it just as filling and flavorful. Coincidently I had to improvise for the next couple of days because I'm in Texas and there is literally no food in our stores.…
  • I don't follow any specific diet or any specific fitness plan. I read a lot, I read nutrition and fitness studies, I watch a lot of youtube video on fitness. Some make sense to me, some raise red flags when it's obvious they are selling something. I do believe in learning from others, but I listen to my body and then…
