  • Hard to tell without seeing your log.... Have you been logging your calories & exercise? Have you set specific targets for each of those? Sometimes "eating better" doesn't translate to a specific calorie deficit. It's that deficit that drives the weight loss.
  • The Kevlar gloves are generally really cut resistant...nearly cut-proof. And not very expensive, considering the safety they provide.
  • I don't have any specific recommendations on models, but do have two thoughts... 1) Make sure you get one with a good hand-guard, or better yet, buy a Kevlar glove. The number of injuries from mandolins, even among professionals, is really high. 2) Make sure that whatever model you get is easy to clean. That's usually the…
  • Of course, the other alternative is to make sure you stay active on your four days off. :) It's not a perfect measure of your activity every day...just an average. If it were me, I'd set my profile to "Lightly Active" and make sure to move around some on my days off. On average, it should be about right.
  • Thank you all for the ideas. Seriously, there were a lot of good ones. I decided I'm going to go with the Seared Tuna salad, which I love. I can do that one with whatever dressing they use, on the side. That's 800 calories...and if the portion is huge, I can put some aside for later. If not, c'est la vie. I'll go a bit…
  • I missed that part. I assumed that the other salads were quoted before dressing, but assumed the Greek included the oil/vinegar. OK, I'm sold, everyone...I'll have the Mile High Ice Cream Pie for 1,979 calories and call it a day. (kidding)
  • Good luck to you! Welcome to the journey to reaching the best you possible!
  • One of the things that resonates with me is that hunger is your body's way of saying that it's starting to dig into its fat supply. I've embraced the hunger as a sign of achievement, rather than a problem. In other words...a little hunger means that you are changing your body, and it's working.
  • Fighting with my mother, because she insists on ordering more food for me... mom: "Get an appetizer" me: "I don't need or want one" mom, to the server: " We'd like a xxx for an appetizer" me, to mom: "are you going to eat it?" mom: "I might have a bite" me, to server: "please cancel the xxx"
  • You're also reeducating your body in terms of what it needs vs. what it wants. You'll get there. Just hang in, and think about how good you'll feel when you realize that it's not a diet anymore...it's a habit.
  • Oh, yeah? You and what army?
  • BWAHAHAHA! Winner!
  • Hey, guess what I learned how to do...
  • I'm NOT obsessive/compulsive. Now that I got that out of the way, I weigh myself multiple times per day. It's not because I obsess over the number, but because I want to understand my body's rhythms. So, If I'm at 181 in the morning, it's OK that I'm at 183 at night...I know that I'll lose two pounds overnight. And, if…
  • Sounds like muscle twitches. Two suggestions...one, I'd make sure you're fully hydrated. Two, you might want to do a little cool-down or stretching after you walk.
  • I would have responded..."Thank you! And, no matter what anybody says, you're not that dumb, either!"
  • Thanks, all, for the ideas and comments. To the question as to why I feel I need to meet the calorie goal, I'm not super concerned about eating my 1600 net calories for the day, but I have read a lot of warnings about not eating below 1200. I'm just not sure if exercise calories work exactly the same as not-eaten calories.…
  • Not a bad idea...every calorie dense food I could think of was in the sugary/fatty category. I didn't think about the good-fatty things. Maybe an almond butter sandwich for a snack...
  • Don't know what the family dynamics are, but if you can, confide in a couple of key supporters at the event about your concerns. Ask them to help you navigate the minefields and maybe run interference against sugar pushers. Stay strong! You own the power. The sugar doesn't. Laugh at the sugar and let it know that you're…
  • Except, if it's someone you've never actually met face to face, maybe this pic is the best they can look. Then, what you're telling them is "you can't possibly really be as ugly as you are". At least, that's how they might hear it.
  • I think I'd be more sensitive to the issue here then on other social networking sites. If someone felt like they had achieved an improvement, and posted a new pic they thought demonstrated that, they might be devastated by a comment that the pic was unflattering. Kinda the opposite of supportive, in that situation.
  • Agreed....but, most of the time, I've found if the bar code is in the database, it's usually close enough for my purposes...and a heckuvalot easier than keying it in. It's funny, I've found out how many of the private-label or store brands are produced by the same manufacturer this way.
  • Or, if you have a phone with the mobile app, you can scan the bar code, which will get it right.
  • For the most part, the advice I've seen is that the dietary cholesterol isn't that important...fat and sugar are much more so. But, if you're concerned about that, and if it's appetizing for you, you can use just the egg whites. The cholesterol is all in the yolk.
  • Echoing what's been said here, the other thing to keep in mind is that with whole fresh fruit, you also are eating fiber to go along with the natural sugar. Juices have all the sugar, but not the fiber...bad.
  • Sorry for the double post.
  • For me, those tools, including MFP, have been essential. I'm a numbers geek. My career has been in financial analysis and reporting, so my professional life is all about metrics. My work is governed by the motto, "if you can measure it, you can manage it". So, that translates to my fitness plans as well. I ride my bike in…
  • Yes, if your goal is to maintain your weight. if you want to lose, you need to eat below your BMR. Every 3500 calories below your BMR = 1 pound. So, 500 cals per day below your BMR = 1 pound per week.
  • So, if you consume at your BMR, and don't exercise, you theoretically will maintain your weight. The 1200 target is to lose. Exercise increases the net calories that you burn.
