I finished my first marathon with a 19-mile long run that took 3:50 (went back to the logbook to check). Don't write off your 20-mile long run. Walk breaks are not necessarily a bad thing. A walk stretches out the muscles and lowers the heart rate. I incorporate scheduled walk breaks in all my long runs. I can and have…

This! And take a pair of worn shoes with. It often helps to analyse how you wear your shoes down which gives clue to to the type of shoe that will work.

For me one of the hardest parts of running is to trust the training at the end and survive taper madness.
-
Same here. I have my target race coming up in 6 weeks and don't want to upset them.
-
Excellent!

I have tried a few different brands but always seem to come back to New Balance. That said, I take the advice of my tried-and-trusted running store very seriously and would try anything they suggest. They always assess your old pair, looking at how you are wearing the shoe down (in- and outside) and then they would suggest…

If you are changing your running form I would really suggest having your shoes reassessed. Take your old shoes with you when you go to the running store. The way you wear your shoes down on the in- and outside gives important clues of the type of shoe you have to run in especially now that you have changed the 'how' you…

I mix it up. If I want a 15 mile run to feel like a 15 mile run, I run alone. If I want a 15 mile run to feel like an 8, I run with a friend. A running partner makes the miles go by faster on a long run.

I eat if I run anything longer than 10k. I work that 'extra' breakfast into my daily allowance.

My kids join me on their bikes sometimes when I run. My daughter hasn't mastered the brakes yet so I have to run really fast to keep up with her. I have also done laps around the school track while my kids play where I can watch them. It is not ideal but at least I get to work out.

I agree. Especially in marathons I often pass people who started out too quickly. Start like a tortoise, finish like a hare.

200 for me please!

Aahhhh, enjoy every step.

I have dog tags but have been thinking of ordering a wrist band.

Well done, it is an awesome experience.

The fat-loading discussed in the article is interesting. During my last marathon I ran about 10 km with a sports doctor. It was great picking her brain. She has a similar believe regarding fat. Apparently it boosts fat metabolism earlier in the race and saves glycogen stores for later. Apart from the fat-loading she also…

I am in sort of a similar situation and I am a firm believer in family first. Although it is not ideal I ran my first marathon maxing out at about 55 km a week (watch the by-the-book runners rip that one to shreds...). I sort of lost my sense of humour, but not my sanity and endurance, at 6 km to go but I survived. But,…

If you are on antibiotics you should generally not run even if you are feeling better.

Running has helped me pull through some pretty bad patches. It is not a cure-all, but runner's high is a great drug. ;)
-
I like the energy of pace groups, it helps to pull you through bad patches. However, I prefer to run my own race using my own pace charts. Sometime their walk breaks don't coincide with mine or something like that. Have a back-up plan and know what needs to happen by when. If the pacing group works for you, great, if it…

Whoot, whoot! Awesome week!

We have two rescues. They are both true bred pavement specials. It would be hard to say which breed features the most in each of them, but the one would probably be an Africanis and the other one was a pug in a previous life. This is Moyo the Africanis: (who is a handsome dog, yes your are!) This is Nini (the…
