It varies wildly. No method of estimating calories burned is 100% accurate, but the best way (at least for "steady state cardio" like running or swimming) is to use a heart rate monitor.

Um....no. Skimmed milk is usually more like 1%, but you can also get 0.1% at some shops. We don't generally call 2% milk "low-fat", it's "semi-skimmed milk". I have no idea what homo milk is - milk for gays?? Full cream milk is called "whole milk" or "full fat". I've no idea what half cream is either!

Nope, salad cream is very different from mayonnaise. It's runnier, and much more vinegar-y. Agreed on the whelk/snail thing. Land snails we Brits would call snails (or escargots if in a French restaurant) and whelks are a specific type of sea snail.

I think that's probably just cos Cadbury's chocolate is imported to the US - I don't *think* they make Cadbury's there? Carmel is a super-posh area so everything would be more expensive there!!

"Bangers" is just slang for sausage in the UK. We still call them sausages. I would say a US jelly roll is more like a UK jam swiss roll, whereas jam roly-poly is a specific pudding (US=dessert!), a bit like a jam swiss roll but made from suet, steamed and served hot with custard. Whelks are a specific type of sea-snail.…

Amazing job! In only 3 months!! Yup, you're totally ready for a half marathon. And great quote - so true!!

Yup, this. I tried it and lost a ton of weight, but put it all back on when I couldn't take not having pasta anymore!! Plus, being in ketosis makes your breath smell really bad and makes you constipated. NICE.

Yup! I'm really enjoying experimenting with veggie dishes :-) I went out to eat last night and had a cajun veggie burger instead of a meat burger and it was delicious (sadly wasn't much fewer calories, oh well! yolo!)

I always thought there was a difference between US "cider" (non-alcoholic) and "hard cider" (alcoholic). But maybe I'm wrong.
-
Maybe our British palates can't tell the difference between a US "biscuit" and a so-called "English" muffin, but I think Beckilovespizza was trying to make the point that a "biscuit" in the UK is actually what Americans would call a cookie. That would be weird for breakfast. (Then again, in the US, maybe not).

Tylenol is just a brand name for the painkiller paracetamol, and Advil is a brand name for the painkiller ibuprofen. And Band-aids are another brand name for what we call plasters. I guess here in the UK where we have an NHS we are used to a lot of generic drugs as opposed to the expensive branded ones! But yeah, back to…

Cheese (uk) = processed plastic (US)

I'm saying you shouldn't freak out! Unless you touch or ingest the blood, semen or other bodily fluids of an Ebola-infected person, you're not going to get it. Chill out.

The reason your body holds on to water is because it needs it to repair muscles. When you work out (and especially when you have started a new routine), you make tiny tears in your muscles. This is why you feel sore the next day or a couple of days later, but as your body repairs those tears, it's also what makes you…

Um, what research findings would those be? I don't see anything scientific in this article, in fact there are parts that are scientifically wrong or very misleading!

Agree Quasita. I don't know how it has happened but somehow the idea of "starvation mode" has become severely twisted. Starvation mode DOES exist, but is not likely to be experienced by most people. Genuine starvation mode is when you eat so few calories, for a prolonged period of time, that your body starts using its own…

I would ask a doctor if you're really worried, but ultimately, listen to your body. Do you have a HRM? If so, wear it during your run and keep an eye on the heart rate - don't push yourself too hard if it's getting too high. Totally different medical problem, but I've been ill with flu for the last 10 days (I know…

Caffeinated drinks do dehydrate you - if you drank a litre of coffee, you would pee out more than a litre of urine. I wouldn't count coffee or tea as 'water'. I only count water as water and log other drinks in the 'food' section. It's generally recommended to drink around 8 x 250ml glasses of water a day, but in truth you…

That marathon pic!! You look amazing!!

MFP gives you a calorie goal that, if you stay at or under it, would allow you to lose weight even if you did no exercise. So yes! Eat your exercise calories! You've earned them! The only thing I would say is that it's quite hard to accurately determine how many calories you've burned through exercise, even if you have a…

Unless you feel really weak, or find that exercising makes you feel worse, there's no reason why you shouldn't work out if you have a cold. I find that I usually feel much better afterwards! Certainly helps clear the sinuses out anyway - take tissues with you for the inevitable runny nose! :-)
-
Seriously?! You're recommending someone who is training for a marathon to eat all raw foods or drop carbs?!
-
Agree with all previous comments. Fuel your body properly for your race and worry about weight loss later. A marathon is seriously demanding on your body and you probably shouldn't be eating at a deficit - certainly not one so big that would allow you to lose 10lbs in just 4 weeks.

Apart from the way in which the food is grown/raised, there's no difference in nutrition between organic and non-organic food. So why would someone with PCOS be able to eat organic dairy but not non-organic?
-
The gym is (or at least should be!) the last place anyone will judge you. Not a single person in that gym was born ripped and toned - those that do look that way work really hard to achieve and maintain that look! Everyone will understand that you gotta start somewhere! Better to be in the gym working towards your goals…

Why not do less cardio but raise the intensity (i.e. run faster for 20-30 minutes and then lift?
-
The OP took offense to this, and I can kinda see why. Maybe there was a "nicer" way of getting the point across....but....actually I agree. The truth can hurt and sometimes you gotta take a little tough love! At 30 years old you are way into adulthood (like it or not) and as an adult, who is on MFP because he wants to lose…

Unfortunately us gals store a lot of fat around our midsection :-( As you've already been advised, you can't spot reduce fat so just concentrate on burning the calories to reduce fat overall. When you say you workout everyday, what exercises are you doing? A mixture of strength and cardio will be your best bet - cardio…
