If you can make it through your workout without needing to eat, shouldn't be a problem. Personally, I know I need at least a cup of broth or something salty beforehand or I'll end up passing out.

Look into Starting Strength if you're truly a beginner. I found the Stronglifts 5x5 program a little too tough (too many reps) when I was starting out). You only have to remember two workouts, and you alternate between them every other day. Easy peasy lemon squeezey.
