  • My girlfriend and I were talking about this actually, but the whole idea of wearing my HRM to bed seems unusual. And to be scientific it would have to be various types of sex over various periods of time. I looked it up on line and was unable to find a reliable count of calories burned. It is very subjective of course. S
  • I'm in a base building stage, currently the workouts are shorter. Sunday - 1 hour run (LSR) Monday - Commute to/from work on bike (32.5km) Tuesday - Commute to/from work on bike. 40 minute run. Wednesday - 1 hour cycle on trainer Thursday - Commute to/from work on bike. 40 minute run. Friday - Commute to/from work on bike.…
  • Way to go Leigh! Bringing us over the 100 mark. 100.01 + 4.51 = 104.52 7.26km in the rain trying to keep in zone 2. A boring solo run with moments of interest and good form. S
  • I'm running a 9.5km race (James Cunningham Seawall Race) here in Vancouver at the end of the month. I'll also be doing a half marathon (Fall Classic) up at UBC in November. Good luck to all who are racing this month, be it your first race, or your five hundredth, remember when you are out there that you are racing and many…
  • I did the Warrior Dash up here in Vancouver during the summer, it was an absolute hoot! Have a blast.
  • Way to go! That's just awesome. Those boys must be just tickled to have a mom that can get out and run and hold their hands crossing the finish line.
  • 40.61 + 3.72 + 5.58 = 49.91 6km on the treadmill on Saturday 9km on the road and in the trails on Sunday Woo hoo. S
  • A couple of folks have mentioned that you might not be eating enough and I want to echo that. Training for Ironman a in 2010 I went to a nutritionist and asked how I could lose weight. I was training 10-15 hours a week (early in the season) and trying to eat healthily, but not losing a single pound. She looked at all my…
  • short steps, high knees and move forward onto your toes. lots of arm motion. Keep your breathing in control and slow down only over the crest of the hill (not just as you hit the top, shortly past it). Don't look at the top of the hill unless you are feeling strong and want to challenge yourself.
  • 26.04 + 5.82 = 31.86 (you know, I can't be the only one doing math ;) )
  • 18.35 + 7.69 = 26.04 hey look we've put in almost a marathon today.
  • You can do it, it's all just a question of training. Good luck with your training. Which marathon are you thinking of doing? S
  • I'd increase the cool down time before getting food in you. The ideal time for food is less than one hour after you complete your exercise for maximum recovery, but 15 minutes without a cool down might just be too little. A few minutes to stretch and bring the heart rate sure helps me at least. As for why it's kicked up…
  • I try for a snack before the gym and a meal afterwards. For running, I go for a snack before, gels during, and something for recovery right after. For cycling, I try a light meal before, whatever I can eat/drink during, and something solid for recovery after (if I'm doing distance). S
  • I think we'll need to keep a running total, so everyone's going to have to do some math along the way (oh look, it's an educational game too!). How long do we think this will take to do? 1 year? 18 months? Running Total (see what I did there with the pun... running total indeed): 18.35 miles
  • Average walking speed is about 3 miles an hour. So assume it will take you an hour and twenty minutes each way. It doesn't seem like overdoing it to me when you break it down like that. I guess it will depend on how often you walk now and what kind of route it is (flat, hilly, trails?). Good luck!
  • I'm having the same problem. Sometimes I eat something bad and then when it comes time for dinner I'm either going hungry or looking for exercise to do so that I can actually eat. I want a fast, convenient, healthy and low calorie snack food please. Oh, and it should taste amazing. S
  • I'll start us off: 5.25 miles S
  • Is that 1280 net (after exercise) and taking into account your weight loss goals? If the goal is to lose weight over time, the site will suggest an amount of calories that will help you achieve your goal. S
  • I totally missed the fact that it might be "racially motivated" rather than a physical endurance race. I'm happy that I was oblivious to that :) S
  • Race what makes you happy. If you aren't having fun racing, I hope you are fast enough to be getting paid to do something that you don't like doing, right? So don't worry about what your friends are doing, if you find that the training and running of a 10km (or a longer race) just doesn't work for you, don't do it.…
  • Hills? What hills? Seriously though, I prefer the long low grade as these I can focus on just ignoring. I simply can't ignore a monster steep hill though and just have to suck down a breath and change my stride to accommodate (high knees, on the toes, lots of arm motion). Just build to the point where you can ignore the…
  • Now, if I can find a way of getting my *kitten* to lie about how much I'm eating, I'm all set. Until then, I'll write everything down. Did you know that Twinnings Earl Grey tea has 2 calories? grumble, grumble.
  • Join a running / walking club at your local running store. Meet the folks that are out there, just like you, who want to lose weight, learn to run, get fit. Sign up for a race, something simple and fun. Some race for a good cause (breast cancer, prostate cancer, run for children's hospital, whatever works for you) helps…
  • Lots of snow and cold? Then the key word is layers. Toque or at least a running hat. Face mask. Wind jacket, vest, long sleeved running shirt, short sleeved running shirt. Running tights under your favourite pair of running shorts. Comfy, wool socks. Shoes with a waterproof liner and traction. If you carry water (and you…
  • I have to agree that riding alone isn't enough to lose weight, at least more than temporarily. You really do have to train yourself to eat well and not put crap in that acts like poor fuel. That being said, my bike is a great tool in helping me stay active, build lean muscle, and it gets me back some of those all important…
