I agree that the proper balance of carbs/protein can vary from person to person. It looks like you might be eating too many calories, though? 2,000 seems like a lot. Not sure what your personal situation is so I don't want to assume anything.

Smoothie (yogurt and /soy milk, blended with fruit). Also, there's nothing saying you have to eat "breakfast food" for breakfast.

The other moral of the story is that men who are overweight aren't socially stigmatized to the same degree as women. Power isn't centered around looks or youthful vitality in the same manner. The status quo eats what the status quo wants to eat. You've discovered one of the truths of the corporate world - and the world at…

You should make a risotto! Or a smoothie. Or some pho. Or some paneer... Tons of good mushy food out there.

I'm a big fan of another form of hot yoga, called "Moksha." Hot yoga rules!

That's not a bad rule of thumb! You might add, "if it can't grow in the soil I'm standing on, it doesn't belong in my body in any significant quantities." In 1900, there was actually more genetic diversity in the fruits and veggies we ate.

Obviously you're Canadian if you're eating President's Choice, so I'd recommend looking up Health Canada's advice on this. I'd also recommend visiting www.oceansalive.org, which has plenty of info, including a chart that tells you how much of each fish you can safely consume.

Here's the ingredient list for the "Chicken in Peanut Sauce" entree from Lean Cuisine's "Spa Cuisine" product line, which they bill as their most health-conscious option: Blanched whole wheat spaghetti (water, whole wheat durum flour), skim milk, cooked chicken tenderloins (chicken tenderloins, water, isolated soy protein,…

Not a fan. In my view, they're full of a whole bunch of additives (chemicals, food colouring, preservatiives) that aren't exactly beneficial to anybody's health. My brand of choice for frozen food is Amy's Organic. It's kind of like "unprocessed" processed food. Better nutritional value, and better taste, in my opinion.

I have generally noted that some parents think that being parents gives them the right to lecture the world. I don't like it.

I am gaining weight. Slowly but surely, it's creeping back up on me. Party due to eating a bit too much, partly due to not kicking my butt hard enough at the gym. Banks, where is that super-motivational post you wrote . . . the one where you pushed yourself just that much harder . . . Need to get off. My. Bum.

Toronto.

This looks amazing! Thank you! I'd love to try this, only I worry that after a heavy rain, water does tend to pool on my terrace; it drains out slowly through the cracks in the patio stones . . . a large box system might impede drainage. Probably better to go with pots or plant boxes staggered around the perimeter, and…

I'm definitely going to try basil and a few different herbs. I've been reading a lot of gardeing blogs and trying to get a handle on things. Do you go with seeds, or do you buy small plants? I've been looking at organic seeds from a place called Richers, just outside of Toronto. I'm wondering what the heck I should use for…

Hold on a second here -- you blew up at him, he dumped you, and now he's not talking to you? Whoa. Aren't adults supposed to communicate with eachother? Would you really want to be in a relationship wtih someone who doesn't communicate? I looked at your pics. His loss. Seriously.

Congratulations!!!!

Also . . . I have been complaining to anyone who will listen about the quality of produce in general at my local grocery store, and the price of the fresh herbs I like to buy. So I had a silly idea. What if I grow some of this stuff myself? I have been reading up on basic seeding techniques and I think I am prepared to…

When I was in university, I was so poor my friends called me "Bag of Rice Mel." Denoting, of course, the massive bag of rice that was the staple of my diet. A diet rich in whole grains and vegetables, and less centered on meat and processed foods, is considerably cheaper than you'd think. The catch is that you have to…

Once again, we have uncovered a universal truth: Perspective. Always try to look at things as if you're in that other person's shoes. Otherwise, others will just be categorized into fat / skinny / vegetarian / meat-eater / child-bearing / childless, ad nauseum. It will always be "me vs. them." Of course, we all maintain…

You actually probably don't look "fat" to her. We're our own toughest critics. Many people will tend to pick apart their own physical flaws, but overlook those of others. To her, you probably look fine, and she is wondering why you are trying to lose weight.

Fellow Christian here - pissed-off Catholic, actually. I think a lot of what my religion has to say is total crap. But I'm a big fan of the J-man (who, incidentally, was not a Catholic . . .). From an antrhopoligical perspective, religion evolved as a way for humans to understand the world and their place in it. I believe…

Hi, I'm back after a temporary hiatus - I've been struggling with some health issues, as well as a pileup at work, and I also took on some freelance work (I was recently published in the Globe and Mail!). As a result, I took about a month off working out - only doing yoga a couple times a week - and gained back some of…

Self? Air-brushed? Definitely. I'd recommend clipping a bunch of paprazzi photos of celebrities in bathing suits / without makeup. You'll notice they're far from perfect. They have sagging skin, cellulite, and sun damage just like everyone else, only they're (mostly) thinner.

My mother has experienced this.

You could also make yourself a shake, using lowfat yogurt, some fresh (or frozen) berries, and a pinch of something healthy like flax or whey protein. The "liquid yoga" drink at a Canadian chain called Fresh is similar to this and fills me up all morning.

Two words: HOT SAUCE. I put it on everything. Even sandwiches. Mmm.

Yeah, I hear you. I had to read that twice but it makes sense, and I think I've done something similar, though maybe not in quite the same order.

Mystery solved! Thanks!

Eat less, drink more. :drinker: Seriously -- wine, gin & soda, and light beer are my mainstays.
