I figured it out! Tap the person's profile pic, then tap their profile name in the next page. You will then be able to send an invite.

It's great to see there are some people who share the same story as me. Some of my failures have been from physical/medical issues. Now that I'm back, I totally see the value of friends on here. I have added you all.
