Compression socks are good preventative for me. I always got them, then read that compression socks are a good preventative and I was able to train for a half marathon without the debilitating effects of shin splints that I had all through sports and military. Try them.

Weight is weight no matter how you measure it or what it is. Don't even worry about all the fat weight vs muscle weight hocus-pocus guesstimates. Exercise mixing cardio and weight training to burn more than you are taking in and voila you have weight loss. Don't read too much into it.
