  • The original post is very inspiring! That first sentence stuck out to me -- do you think there is a correlation between a high birth weight and tendency towards overweight later on? I too was almost 10 lbs at birth, and my mother had gestational diabetes.
  • This place doesn't allow deadlifts either! Can't imagine doing a proper leg workout without deadlifts -- and I'm hardly a hardcore muscle head. No thanks! I understand it's supposedly trying to create a welcome environment, but in a way I think this is encouraging mediocrity. There are plenty of other gym chains with the…
  • Sorry, didn't mean to double post ;)
  • So true! I finally got around to weight training and though I am about 5 or 6 lbs heavier than my previous recent LW, I look much lighter. Yay, strength training!
  • I am a night owl as well and often eat late if I'm out by choice or necessity. I log in the same "day" that I'm awake -- whatever happens before I go to bed. I compensate by eating a little less by the next day, but I still track on the actual "day" I ate so I can remember later what happened when if I need to go through…
  • Gym machines especially are notorious for giving a large overestimate of calories burned. The MFP exercise burns are generally a bit high too. I usually estimate the real burn to be about 2/3 of what MFP tells me -- and that's on something easier to calculate, like running at a steady pace. Other activities are much more…
  • That makes sense. Thank you for the response!
  • Frankly, though we may feel obligated and people can be annoying in the moment, after a couple of days have passed, nobody is going to remember who ate what :)
  • I've gone to something like.... 15 cocktail parties since the beginning of December? ; / My strategies are similar to what others have suggested: I have a large-volume, high-fiber, but low-calorie meal before I go. Usually something like an egg white veggie omelet or a salad with some protein. Then if I eat any of the…
  • Why do you think so? And do you think that only applies to fasted weight training -- or fasted exercise of any kind? (Not meant as a snotty answer, I am truly trying to understand BCAA supplementation better.)
  • I'm with the others who try to avoid fast food for all the hidden "extras"... That said, I run around a LOT at random times for my work sometimes, so I've been known to grab the occasional quick meal. As far as super-fast food places with drive-thrus, I think Wendy's is the best! Taste-wise, their current salads are pretty…
  • Yes, absolutely! Now that I am no longer medically overweight, things have slowed down like crazy. I would like to lose another 25 pounds to put me a little lower in the "healthy" range, and now every pound is a struggle. I've taken off maybe 3 lbs over the last month and a half ... But hey, I figure that's better than…
  • I eat some of them back because my hunger naturally regulates itself that way... But I definitely do not always reach 1200 "net." I don't have a heart rate monitor yet (that will change after Christmas hopefully, hah) and based on others' experience and different calculations around the web, I assume my "real" calorie burn…
  • This is interesting. I am confused about when to take BCAAs and how much. I am very concerned about catabolizing muscle as I am finishing up training for an endurance event. My race (half-marathon) is in January and after that I will switch to more of a lifting focus, but right now I'm doing a ton of cardio all the time. I…
  • I have to admit I haven't checked up on MDA in a couple months since, when I started training for an endurance event, I already knew I was breaking one of Mark's #1 rules :( BUT, I have read 'The Primal Blueprint' in the last year. The edition I read does not include sprouted-grain breads as a suggestion. Has it been…
  • I would also suggest that those interested in traditional foods -- but maybe not necessarily the paleo approach -- to check out the Weston A. Price Foundation / the works of Sally Fallon, like her cookbook 'Nourishing Traditions' or her book with Mary Enig, 'Eat Fat Lose Fat.' They are kind of different branches of the…
  • I do paleo/primal on and off (more "off" and doing "clean eating" right now because I'm training for an endurance event). When I'm this mode I get plenty of calcium through things like nut milks, broccoli, spinach, etc., so that isn't much of a concern if you eat tons of cruciferous vegetables and other non-dairy,…
  • How has nobody mentioned Hatebreed? ;) OP you probably already have 'em on your iPod, but I have found these guys to be the quintessential angry lifting music for years, lol.
  • CONGRATS!!!! :) I am running a half-marathon soon and previous to training for this, I had never run more than 5K ever. I think I almost cried the first time I hit 8 miles. It's a huge accomplishment!
  • Lol this thread could EASILY turn into a long argument about what constitutes "real" metal or hardcore SO, OP, what do you already like?? It'll be easier to give suggestions of similar acts. ;)
  • I have about 15 hours of tattooing over about 5 different areas :) I will get more but I decided I was going to reward myself with more as I reach my different goal weights! I've used up the spaces that won't stretch with weight loss/gain so I don't want to get an area covered now that's going to end up shrinking and maybe…
  • I love him!! I went to one of his shows earlier this year. Saw Brian Posehn last night too. :)
  • I do both :) I'm training for a half-marathon that's coming up and I would say I've done 75% of my training on a treadmill. I live in Florida and have a weird schedule so most of my free time to do long runs has been in the middle of the day when it's just TOO hot to run outside. I still do my longest training runs…
  • I was wondering what the more scientifically inclined of you out there thought about calories in vs. calories out when it comes to alcohol, which doesn't really fit into any of the macros. For instance, lately I really can't drink at all -- maybe one glass of wine or a cocktail -- and lose, even if I fit it into my daily…
  • Almond Breeze has a ton of added calcium -- I think something like three times as much as regular milk. I drink it for taste reasons, do not consume much other dairy, and eat a ton of spinach and broccoli, and my calcium levels here on MFP are always over my goal. :)
  • Hi! I have an open diary and think I eat pretty healthy -- lots of veggies, protein, some fruit and dairy, and the occasional whole grain. Feel free to add me on here. I also keep a visual food diary (photos of meals) on Tumblr, and the address for that is in my MFP profile. Welcome and good luck :)
  • I don't know why I didn't immediately think of this earlier -- I feel so stupid now but there are many DVDs aimed specifically for people in your situation! Google "seated aerobics" or "chair aerobics." Gin Miller has some seated workouts focusing on both cardio and strength, or check out chairdancing.com. There are a…
  • Would you feel up to working up a sweat through doing more strength-type exercises for your upper body and core? You could get just a couple resistance bands (I got one recently for like $5 at Marshall's) and use those, and do body weight exercises like push-ups, etc. It'll be tough but not take up too much space or put…
  • I didn't read this as a rant, and in fact found it interesting. Looks like they have vastly improved the food choices since I did Medifast. It's still very low-calorie though. It didn't work out for me, but I was in my early 20s and active and 800 calories a day really wasn't enough to sustain my daily life.…
  • Medifast is effective if you follow it but I tried it a while back and honestly, it sucked. As the name implies, it's based generally on a liquid "fast." It's probably changed a little bit since I followed it but basically you take in some calories six (maybe seven?) times a day. One is a very small low-carb meal, and the…
