I'd listen to this. Water, tea coffee what ever - no need to be drinking anything you wouldnt otherwise drink - just drink a little more of it!

At your speed you are only running for 15 mins - Slow down and run longer - will be less stressful and will let you ease into it.
-
Speed = distance/time eg 3miles/1 hour = 3miles an hour Distance = Time * speed eg 2 hour at 3mph = 6 miles Time = distance/speed eg 1mile/3mph = 1/3 hour or 20 minutes. Time is easy - you have a watch right? Distance - drive it, GPS, google maps, pre-measured course, track. Once you have Time and Distance then you work…

Of course it's nice to run without thinking of times, distance, speed, HR etc That's all fine and dandy if you just want to run, but it won't help you to maximise your performance for a specific event.
-
Ignore this - if you use garmin Connect you will get your route overlaid onto a google or bing maps - satellite view if you like.

According to Livestrong website male testosterone levels are highest in the morning - no surprise there then!
-
how are you taking your resting HR? You would need to take it over several days to get a reliable reading. You dont want to be worrying about it - it will put it up even further and then you will worry more and ,,,,,

distance is the deciding factor - all else being equal. Extend the debate to running v walking and it isnt so simple.

Back pain shouldn't happen when you run - so it's not normal. BUT there could be many things causing it - ranging from the fact you have just started and your back is hurting from the new activity (like if you were digging the yard) to having a back problem that it made worse by running. I dont think you will find out what…

There's a lot of science out there on faster v longer. Beginners like to see progress so the instinct is to say get to 5k then try to speed up over the same distance. This works to a point and is satisfying. It is interesting that you say you reach your HR max during your workout - this is because you can no longer supply…
-
how long is a piece of string - too many unknown factors for anyone to give you a useful answer. Also - when you say 10k race - what are you hoping for - to get round? to run it all? to do it in xx minutes? BUT Assuming you complete the c25k and can run 5k - then you can reasonably expect to extend your distance by 10% a…

@meerkat - I am glad you respect my views to point they disagree with yours.

Calm your pants dgrndancer - all I'm saying is that people are too quick to blame shoes these days when there is a more obvious cause and many other possibilites. A biomechanical assessment would only be indicated if the OP continued to present with pain over time. If an assessment is indicated then it should be done by a…

meerkat - I can't help you if you can't see the relevance. I am glad you agree with me otherwise though.

ask the person who put you in the boot - they should know!

Your goals arent sufficiently defined - so you'll never know when you have reached them . Try to come up with SMART targets Specific - something you can define - speed, weight, time Measurable - something you can easily measure to judge progress Achieveable - something thats attainable Realistic - you have the resources to…

Breaking-in shoes - My road shoes initially caused a little hot spot behind the ball of my foot - they dont now. My off road shoes initially rubbed a little on the side of my ankle - they dont now - maybe it;s me that's changing but that's the kind of breaking in that I am talking about. In other words, no need to head…

I try to get out for 4.30 but that doesn;t work either:ohwell:

Exactly where did i say gait analysis was a "bad idea". Who knows what that most likely solution to the poster's problem is. But given we know they have just started running it sounds pretty reasonable to me to suggest that as a cause. Therefore working through that is a good first step rather than running (limping?) back…

Some heart rate monitors are also GPS receivers but GPS is nothing to do with the HR part of it. Could be your battery is low - solution - change the battery could be you are not wearing strap correctly - solution - check your handbook ensure it is properly placed and contacts are in contact! could be your heart rate is in…

when you were swimming your goal was easy to determine - do a certain distance with a certain stroke in the shortest time possible for you - then designing a training plan to help you achieve this So you need a goal! Should it be to get fit for an event, to help you play your sport a bit better - to lose weight - to have…

Cardio-based exercise is anything that will get your heart and lungs working a bit harder for a period of time. Swimming is generally considered the best all round exercise - as you use a lot of muscle groups and it's not stressful on joints - but you need a pool! Running can be the ultimate cardio exercise and is as hard…

I think the answer here lies in the fact that you are new to running. People have been buying running shoes for decades without gait analysis so I wouldnt look at that as the solution. Your shoes should be comfortable, although like any shoes there may be some breaking in required. Most of us have a bias to one side that…

so basically, you're saying 'dont eat between meals' - revolutionary!
-
Still dont get the reason for doing this. surely you can achieve the body you want with a good diet and appropriate exercise - and maybe some drugs!
-
It;s hard to motivate yourself to train for the sake of it. Aim for an event, or take up a sport that your running will support. Join a club - running, GAA, orienteering. Must be plenty happening in and around Dublin.

6.30am! FM. I'd be wanting advice on how to get up that early!
-
That;'s a good thing?
-
as above - a combination of lost fitness and harder activity is causing you to tire more quickly - that's normal. However, if your breathing gets restricted, wheezy and you feel you need to clear your airways then that's a different matter - then it could be an allergy - hayfever? You should know the difference.
