Breathing problems while jogging?

I used to be able to run 10k in 50 minutes last year on the treadmill. But with moving house/finishing up the year in college & family problems, I got out of the habit of going to the gym and now my membership is up.
SO, I recently started to jog outside. But if I try to run any faster than a slow jog I get a terrible burning feeling in my lungs where I literally have to stop to catch my breath...I start salivating and need to spit...(gross, I know)...why is this? Am I not breathing correctly? This never happened to me indoors, where I'd usually only stop if my legs hurt or I felt weak. Now I have to stop cos I cant breath!
I'm a non smoker and eat very healthy food.
Tips?

Running on a treadmill is a lot different then running outside because the treadmill helps propel you forward.. running outside all you have is your legs to move you forward.
My suggestion is to slow down a ton until you get used to running outside.. and then start to speed back up. I don't think it has anything to do with your breathing but more with you are trying to go too fast too soon.0 -

You just need to get used to running outside. Give it time and you'll get over the breathing issue.0 -
as above - a combination of lost fitness and harder activity is causing you to tire more quickly - that's normal.
However, if your breathing gets restricted, wheezy and you feel you need to clear your airways then that's a different matter - then it could be an allergy - hayfever? You should know the difference.0 -
Sounds like you are going too fast, it's easy to track your pace on a treadmill, but once you get outside you may be going faster than you think you are.

Also, is it really hot and/or humid there? Sometimes that make it harder to breathe.0 -

) but I think you're all right, its probably a combination of lost fitness + running a bit too fast. I'm an over-achiever, what can I say? Ha ha...any tips for staying motivated to run outdoors regularly? I have to force myself to get out... 0 -
If you enjoy running it doesn't take much motivation, but I wish I had that problem, haha. If it's gets too hot during the day you can try waking up earlier, but that doesn't work for me either because I already get up at the buttcrack of dawn.Thanks for the replies you guys! There's lots of ways to keep yourself motivated though. I'm competitive so I like to track my progress and try to get faster or go farther every week. You could sign up for a race, it always makes me more motivated when I have something to train for. You could find a running buddy or join a running club. If you're goal oriented then give yourself a goal, like you want to run a 5k in under 30 minutes or something. Load up your iPod with new music every week or so, sometimes I like to run just to listen to music. Buy new running clothes, I know girls like to show off new clothes. It's all about what works for you!0 -

My one motivation is that i'm doing C25K and iI don't want to miss a day!
Once i'm out though things like ok, i'll run to the end of the block and then thats turns into i'll run to the next stop sign and so on down the line.0 -
It;s hard to motivate yourself to train for the sake of it. Aim for an event, or take up a sport that your running will support. Join a club - running, GAA, orienteering. Must be plenty happening in and around Dublin.0
