  • I just sent mine in-- hoping to finally get my Hogwarts letter! This is such an amazing idea! Just the boost I need to really commit to MFP again :)
  • Hi ladies! Count me in, too. My baby boy will be 8 weeks on Friday and I go back to work on Tuesday :'( I could use some help staying motivated and accountable-- I used MFP before I got pregnant and lost ~20 lb so I know it works if I'm consistent!
  • THIS! Plus, The No-Meat Athlete. Here's Matt's latest post about vegan sources of protein: http://www.nomeatathlete.com/where-vegetarians-get-protein/ I skip eggs, dairy, and meat and have no problem with my protein intake. I've considered shakes, but haven't gone there quite yet.
  • I'm running my first half on October 6 and will start reaching for a marathon after that! I'll be doing the MCM 10k while my husband runs the full marathon in hopes of a BQ-- I'll be there to cheer all you MCM-ers on! I wanted the MCM next year to be my first, but I think I'm going to push up my timeframe to one next…
  • Watching FOK was a major turning point for my husband and me. We'd always eaten pretty healthily, but that particular movie really opened our eyes as to how what we were eating was slowly wreaking havoc on our bodies. Both of our families have really high instances of cancer, so we wanted to do everything we could to…
  • I'm not sure how they are from a weight loss perspective, but if you're able to find a yoga class with a great teacher, it makes all the difference in the world! A great teacher will encourage the class to see it as a "practice," with room for growth and expansion in abilities. In accepting your body and challenging its…
  • Congrats! I'm the opposite of you-- I struggle SO MUCH on the treadmill and can only run outside! Once you start racing, though, it's hard to stop :)
  • Sounds like you're doing a great job! Just remember it's not all about what the scale says-- feeling your clothes fit better is a huge deal! I haven't lost much overall, but my clothes fit much better and I have way more energy when I'm really paying attention to nutrition and exercise. Keep up the good work!
  • I'm running my first half in October and training for a triathlon in August as part of the overall training schedule. For the first time in my life, I feel like an athlete :)
  • THIS! My husband and I agree that the best part of wedding planning was the Engaged Couples' Weekend we had to do as part of our Pre-Cana at church. After seeing both our sets of parents get divorced in the time we've been together, we know it takes more than a wedding to make a marriage. Did we love our wedding? Yep. Do…
  • A kale/tomato/avocado salad is sooooooooo good! http://kidtestedfirefighterapproved.com/2012/02/06/kale-avocado-salad/ ETA: and baked avocado fries! Crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside OMGGGGGG http://diana212m.blogspot.com/2011/10/baked-avocado-fries.html Guacamole, too. I could eat a gallon of guac with chips!…
  • Why'd the cowboy get a dachshund? Someone told him to "get a long, little doggie!"
  • Seconded for C25K. Also, just sign up for a race! Having that deadline is a big motivator, and the euphoria of crossing the finish line is like nothing else in this world-- you'll be instantly addicted. I also found that having a running buddy (my husband, in my case) helped a lot, as did having a couple of cute things to…
  • Nicely done! Thanks for sharing your experience and tips. I definitely agree with the recommendation to test out the course. I ran a 4-miler a few weeks ago, and though I knew there was a hill thanks to elevation maps I'd reviewed beforehand, I didn't realize it was a two-fer hill that was a LOT steeper than I thought! I…
  • If I'm at the gym, it's usually a pop/dance mix with variations on the theme of "hot chick," like Sexy and I Know It, Sexy B*tch, Moves Like Jagger, Low, Right Round, On the Floor, etc. If I'm running, it's up-tempo alternative with bands like the Foo Fighters, Muse, The Black Keys, Dropkick Murphys, Weezer, The Killers,…
  • Thanks for the advice, everyone! I did a lot of running last summer into the fall, and I've kept active, going to the gym 3x/week since January. I have a race series that's 3-4-5 miles over 3 weekends (finished the 3-miler in 28:56, so I'm not fast by any stretch, but I wanted to get sub-30), so I'll already be building my…
  • "You're killing me, Smalls!"-- The Sandlot I say this probably at least once every single day. My husband and I communicate mainly through movie quotes, though lol
  • When I was in high school, I was 120-125 and remember being devastated that I broke 130. I was up around 150 when I decided to make a change. Now that I've been working out consistently for over a month, I realize I'm not losing a lot but definitely defining muscle. I'd like to get back into the 130s (130-135 would be…
  • I have no literature... mine is just a realization that if I don't get my butt out of bed and do it first thing I know I won't do it later. Queen of excuses here. I'm on team get-sick-if-I-eat-before-a-workout, too. Usually just water before and during, then I'll have a tasty breakfast after I'm done. I have to wait at…
  • When I shuffle into the locker room to shower because moving my legs any closer to normal walking is agony. When I want to cry when I realize I have to lift my arms to wash my hair. When the next logical step is to collapse in a heap at the bottom of the stairs rather than try to climb them upstairs. When my husband won't…
  • I definitely saw the preening (both male and female) at one of my old gyms to be distracting. If you're the type to go all Van Damme and not pay any attention to what's going on around you, all the power to you. As for me, I was a spaz at the gym because I used to hate going. I'd have to distract myself by reading or…
  • This. I thought I was being a great wife and ordered my husband a pair of shorts for Christmas and he thinks they're too short. Of course, then he turns around and says "I should get some running shorts... they're shorter, but they're good." I can't win! haha Another time, I took him regular clothes-shopping, which worked…
  • Last year I gave up coffee, which was a big struggle since I worked in a bakery and could have all the coffee I wanted. I may do that again, but I was thinking of something more spiritually-based instead, like reflecting on a passage every day or trying to make time to say the Rosary. I find I'm a lot calmer and centered…
  • My hubby and I started them, but I had to stop because all the jumping blew out my ankle :( The best session we had was when we brought his laptop to an empty classroom at the gym and did it there. No worries about pounding through the floor or sweating all over the living room lol
  • I'm from the Boston area and have a major soft spot for New England. Boston is fun, but I've never done much of the touristy stuff (Freedom Trail, Duck Tours, etc.). If you can get up to Cape Ann in MA, towns like Rockport, Gloucester, Newburyport, Essex, and Ipswich are all charming with a lot of great history. One of my…
  • Another vote for "Sexy and I Know It," because if I'm at the gym/running, I'm getting sexier, right? Other good ones: Right Round- Flo Rida Sexy B*tch- David Guetta I See You Baby- Groove Armada Push It- Salt n Pepa ...I have a hard time not dancing on the treadmill. And for what I would have in my "getting in shape"…
  • Thanks! That's what I started to gather, but I still couldn't really find anything definitive. Note to self: leave the grapefruits for the hubby and the free grapefruit juice at work for everyone else!
  • What it doesn't mention is how MUCH grapefruit you have to consume to throw off the effectiveness of the Pill. Any at all? Once a day? 15 grapefruits a day? I'm not a huge grapefruit fan, but I just realized I like it sprinkled with a little cinnamon/sugar and broiled for a while... great timing haha Off to do more…
  • I had one of the most unique names in my class growing up (Leah... not all that exotic, but still) and I HATED it. I wanted to be Kate or Meg or any of the million same names and not stand out. Doesn't help that my maiden name was Jones, either. And my dad's name is Dave. Yup, Davey Jones. My married name is Hancock, and I…
  • Medium/large iced hazelnut milk (maybe skim) and sugar. The caramel coffee is good, but it's hard to have them get right. I don't think the caramel flavor is like the hazelnut (almost roasted in), but with a flavor shot, which can be WAY overdone... yuck.
