  • Jumping in to the tussle, as some are saying much of the same thing but still disagreeing. Here is my experience with Low Carb (and a few opinions): 1. Did South Beach diet for 3 months a few years ago (not as restrictive as Atkins but still quite a change). Lost 25 pounds 2. Weight loss was due to decreased calorie…
  • I am a smart *kitten* but unfortunately I can't derail this thread because I am also a CICO kind-of guy :-)
  • This is spot on - in my opinion you are a wise 20 year old. As a 20 year old I was a college athlete and had to eat 4 meals per day just to maintain weight. Now as a 50 year old I am 40 lbs heavier and am struggling to move it back the other way (making slow progress finally). However I do recognize the weight I have…
  • 999, you are exactly right. Weight loss is about setting up and maintaining a caloric deficit. Some will establish this without exercising at all (so for them it is 100% diet). Some will establish this by exercising 5 hours per day and burning 2500 calories (so for them it is probably closer to 25% diet). There is no…
  • Sing, I am 50 and my feelings and experiences are quite similar to yours. So I apparently don't know much either :-)
  • In my experience the general message of the OP is correct. Physics works, and bottom line is that long-term weight control is all about calories in vs. calories out. The key is that calorie burn rates vary significantly per individual, so in order to make this work you need to determine what your burn rate is. It might…
  • Funny, because at 18 years old I couldn't have gotten to 50 pounds overweight if I tried? Metabolism was too good and I had no worries. So if this is all so easy, how on earth did you ever let yourself go to the point of being 50 pounds overweight as a teenager?
  • So.......if it were that simple, then how did you end up at 280 in the first place? Did you just wake up one day like that?
  • HIIT does work if you do it correctly, because it burns more calories than plain cardio both during and after the workout (if you don't believe it then do your own comparison with a Heart Rate Monitor). The reason HIIT is not effective for some is because it tends to be a painful workout (again if done properly), so people…
  • It is very difficult for some people to eat only what they burn, and therefore much more difficult to eat at a deficit. Why do you think there are so many overweight folks? Food addiction is a real problem for some. Glad you have no issues though.
  • I like to weigh daily (same time each morning). Doing this I feel helps my daily motivation, plus averaging the measurements over a week helps to minimize effects from variation in water retention and give a better picture of what is really going on.

  • Wow, glad I don't think about such things, I would be afraid to breathe....
  • Wii sports is just fine and will be beneficial. Anything is better than nothing! If you prefer to work out at home there are many choices for exercise videos that can give you a great workout! Good Luck!!! Oh, and regarding eating back calories "burned" in exercise - my target is to never eat back more than half - I agree…
  • I weigh every few days out of curiousity but I pay more attention to the monthly measurements. There have been months that I lost almost no weight but my measurements improved noticeably This means I am shedding fat and probably gaining some muscle. The scale is not always your friend as it doesn't tell the whole story.…
  • Some HRMs can't be trusted. I have a Timex Triatholon with a chest strap and it indicates 50% greater calories burned than my old one. This with all of my statistics entered properly, etc. I looked on the web and have seen many others making the same complaints about it. The companies response is "we use a basic formula",…

  • Welcome Kattarra! I am a 47 year old guy trying to get fit again. Probably have 25-30 pounds to lose while I'm at it. How are you approaching you weight loss? Straight dieting, exercise, a combination perhaps? Best of luck to you! -Andy
  • Bingo. For me low carb really suppressed my appetite. Protein is filling, and many carbs aren't. This is why many find low carb easier than low fat - you tend to not be hungry when on low carb.
  • Interesting thread....always a controversial subject on these boards. My experience has been similar to many others - low carb definitely seems to be the fastest way to weight loss. I started South Beach Diet a few years ago and took off 20 pounds in 5 weeks (and it is not as low carb as Atkins). Biggest issue to me was I…
  • When I did my first round of P90X two years ago I hated the yoga initially but I think it did me a lot of good. Adds balance and flexibility plus it has a good ab workout at the end. So I'm going to bite the bullet and do it again this round (on Saturdays when I have the 90 minutes to spare). I will only do it once on rest…
  • Hi all! My name is Andy and I am looking forward to starting on Wednesday, 1/3 (setting up schedule so that Yoga falls on Saturday and off day on Tuesday). I completed P90X once before in 2009 and it was great - I dropped about 20 lbs. and lowered my body fat@ from 25% to 17%. Unfortunately I have since fallen off the…
