  • I often do bodyweight exercises before and after a run - seems to work as a good warm up and keeps me from sitting down during the cool-down. Plank, squats, lunges, push ups. Sometimes at the end of the run I do a set of squat thrusts until I reach my time goal, if the run turned out a few minutes shy of goal time.
  • 43 now - should be at goal by my 44th birthday in October - and the fittest I have ever been as an adult! So glad I did this just as the 40s 'peak' started
  • Here goes (wince) : -64 pounds from highest weight (-58 since starting MFP)
  • Still paying for the salt in my dinner on Sunday night! We started with a loaded cheese fries appetizer (with jalapeno cheddar, bacon, sour cream AND ranch dressing! - everything just swimming in the grease from the bacon and cheese) Took two bites of my dinner salad after that because I was already feeling the ill…
  • Never been a fan of pop/hip-hop music (makes me feel like a middle-aged mom trying to look cool for her kids anyway!) so here's a few from my otherwise diverse "Running" playlist: If You're Going Through Hell - Rodney Atkins Thursday - Morphine You Ain't Much Fun Since I Quit Drinkin' - Toby Keith Run Through the Jungle -…
  • and I like to eep eep eep, eeples and baneenees!
  • Agreed! My husband ran for about a year, then suffered lots of related pain (plantar fascitis, shin splints, etc) and quit. Me? I was always afraid to run - big girls and big butt bouncing down the road - I did not want that to be me. Winded after 1/4 mile, dead legs - why would that be fun?? Dropped a bunch of weight…
  • My thighs started at 29" and shrunk VERY slowly over the loss of more than 60 lbs in 9 months. They are now 24" and I saw the most dramatic reduction when I started running regularly (-3" in the last 3 months or so). At the same time, I do a ton of squats and lunges during every strength training workout - 240+ in various…
  • Failure is not an option unless you allow it. Don't give yourself the choice. Eat what you like and pay for it in the gym if you have to. Calories and macros are a budget, and you have to spend wisely. Quit reading the forums and get moving NOW! OK - that was more than one - sorry!
  • You can do this! I lost 63 pounds in 9 months, but I have gained a lot of muscle over that time period too since I work out every day, three days a week doing strength training with a trainer, and hard cardio (HR b/w 150-160 - about 85% of my max) for an hour every other day. My body fat has gone from 46% to 29% - a HUGE…
  • Almost there! I'm 5' 2.5", 43 years old and have an hourglass shape (well, now I do!). HW: 235, size 22W MFP SW: 225 CW: 167, size 12/Large GW: 145-150, size 8/Medium - I think  (I've never been less than 157 as an adult and I can't wait to see what it looks like!) <---profile is from April at 180, more recent photos…
  • Both of our dogs were named on the rides home from the breeders. They are Bernese Mountain Dogs: Baron (male - saw a Chrysler Le Baron convertible on the highway that day) Morgan (female - saw a Morgan Uniform delivery truck on the highway that day) Hoping for another new Berner puppy soon - can't wait to see what's on the…
  • Hourglass - I find that I lose fat first in the last place I packed it on. For me that's from the core (lost 10 inches each on hips and waist, 6 from the chest), then the extremeties (calves (-3), thighs (-4) and arms (-3)). After 62+ pounds lost, it's pretty evenly distributed now so I hope that the last 20 lbs comes off…
  • I love this! My husband did a masonry job at our house a few weeks ago and there was a huge pile of clumps of bricks, mortar and cement blocks that had to go to the transfer station. I had some time one day so I loaded them into the truck (8ft bed - about half full) and off I went. Got some pretty curious looks from the…
  • In honor of Laconia Bike Week last week - Turkey Legs! Best food at the rally!
  • Personal preference I guess. I lose track when I don't pay attention (in everything - not just fitness!) - so I weigh in every day. My weight doesn't fluctuate much from day to day - but I like the scale to read the same or less every day. It keeps me mindful. I also look in every mirror these days - I'm not vain, it's…
  • Hey! I WRITE certification courses and exams - does that qualify? Former developer and DBA turned Learning Manager - making the world geekier one learner at a time! MS Information Technology 22+ years in software dev and I think I read every classic sci-fi novel in print by the time I was 14 (Asimov, Clarke,…
  • Basic running pants (compression style) Cotton t-shirt 2 Bras - one regular/one sports bra - gotta keep the bounce to a minimum! Saucony Ride 4 socks stopwatch Bug Spray (I run in the woods most of the time and the skeeters are vicious early in the morning) I keep a water bottle in my truck for the end of the run (I only…
  • I dont' get angry at people very often, but I DO get mad at THINGS. I have thrown so many vacuum cleaners that it's a running joke in our house about how long each one will last before I get mad and chuck it down the stairs! I have also had the fun of throwing a big upholstered chair out a second floor window into a raging…
  • 5147+50=5197
  • I did these kinds of things too - everything was modified in some way so I could do them, and as a little 225 lb meatball, I felt ridiculous. Stick with it - you are only starting out and as you get stronger, you will be able to increase all areas - more reps, less time, more weight, better form. It has taken me 6 months,…
  • A nutritionist explained to me recently that all the major brands of peanut butter (Jif, Skippy, etc) are essentially peanut flavored Crisco! The peanut oil is the most valuable part of the peanut, so they extract the oil and sell it separately, then add the hydrogenated oils back in to give it that consistency. I eat 2…
  • "this is the best part - it is so amazing when your kids brag about you! That's when you know they really believe in you!
  • You can do this! I got my license last year at 42! Started with a Yamaha 250, upgraded to a V-Star 1100 Custom that I bought originally. Starting on the smaller bike was key - and I agree with the above posters - I rode our high school parking lot first, then all the back roads here in NH before I felt comfortable. My…
  • I am guilty! All the perfect pilates moms in my neighborhood have never wanted anything to do with me and I assumed they were just stuck up. Nothing's really changed in the past 6 months, even after losing almost 50 lbs. Have I been projecting my assumptions on them? I am tuned in to people's perceptions and am actively…
  • This^ add insult to injury when they do rinse, but dump their gross leftovers all over that pan I was soaking! I make them come back and reach into the goop to retrieve their utensils - you'd think that would teach them, but nooooooo.....
  • I'm in southern NH too! quasi-paleo (not every day - husband and kids would freak!). Having a lot of success with MFP and personal training at a gym - but I do lots of cross-training too. I run, mountain bike, and hike - 7 days a week (so I'm a little obsessive!) Add me!
  • My favorite part too - and I also missed the remark, the whole theater was roaring!
  • I think every woman should take a basic self defense class. Many of our local Karate studios offer them, often for free. The basic premise is that your learn what to do to get AWAY! Not to fight! Always have an escape route in mind wherever you are. OP sounds like a smart lady - and that means we are all targets, no matter…
  • Like above posters have said, the most important thing is to have your gait analyzed and match your shoe to the gait and your weight. Over or under-pronation might not be obvious to you, but the wrong shoe can cause significant injury and the last thing you want is to derail your running before you even get started! I have…
