  • On another forum I'm a member of, I wrote that when I went to visit my doctor and told him I was planning to lose weight and get in shape his response was a fairly apathetic 'Sounds good.' We had a good laugh because doctors hear that so often and then it never happens. I said, 'Let's freak out some doctors!' They said…
  • Ignore the belly button bit. For those of you who have a normal torso length, your waist is probably at your belly button. For the rest of us, look in the mirror and bend to the side. Where your torso actually bends is your waist. For the short waisted, it'll be near the bottom of your rib cage. For the long waisted, it…
  • MFP will only yell at you (as a woman) if your calories in are less than 1000. Grab a little extra snack or something to push you over that and you'll be fine. It doesn't count your calories out against its yelling thing, so exercise shouldn't effect it.
  • If your comment is that you've been gaining weight since you started lifting weights, the reason is very simple. As you lift, you damage your muscles (part of the process and normal). Your body floods the area with fluid, partly to better transport glucose, protein, vitamins, etc in and out to speed the healing, and partly…
  • I'll never get my 6'6" OH to give up the booth, but I can't fit them because sitting in them makes me feel like a 6 year old! I'm a foot shorter than him, but it feels ridiculous not to be able to sit up high enough to see past my plate without sitting on my feet.
  • I get this from some of the other women at work. The biggest offenders in the 'you don't need to lose any weight' game tend to be the very heaviest of the other weight loss folks. I think they look at me and see a weight/shape that they'd be happy to get to and being told that I'm actually still overweight (not for much…
  • I was trying to do superman exercises on my carpeted living room floor. I can no longer do that without some kind of extra padding. And by extra padding I mean that my yoga mat was ineffective. I need a freaking pillow.
  • I still don't bother with the mirror often, but I happened to look into one a few days ago. I have dimples? Where did they come from? How long have they been there?! I used to be the only one of the kids without dimples. Ha! No more!
  • MFP is used not only by well adjusted adults trying to lose weight in a healthy manner, but also by adults and teens with anorexia. The program doesn't care about exercise calories in its 'yelling' amounts, it counts intake only for that feature. If a woman closes their diary at <1000 calories, or a man at <1200 calories,…
  • I don't log the coffee itself (though it looks as if I should because potassium) just the stuff I mix into it. I do account for it as a cup of water intake though. IIRC, a 10 ounce cup of black coffee has about 3 calories in it. If I've had a lot of coffee, I could maybe see doing a quick add for the calories, but for most…
  • Ginger to help open them up. I'm more a proponent of herbal teas as treatment than food, but that's probably because I'm not much of a cook. Anything with enough spice and heat that you feel it in you nose when you smell it can be used to help unstop your sinuses. Remember to finish your antibiotics even if you are feeling…
  • Keep sodium above 1800 Mg most days unless your doctor has told you otherwise. It's actually a vitally important part of your body's electrolyte balance. And getting too much sodium, for someone with no complicating factors, really isn't that big a deal, because your kidneys process it out within a few hours. An…
  • Thanks to those of you who gave some advice on these. My potassium intake is always low, and coupled with the ectopics I can feel wiggling my heart around, I'm getting my doctor to check my K+ next week when I go in. I'd rather get it from while food sources than pills, but I still need to get it checked. I really need to…
  • I'll be honest with you, if I see kale show up in a friend's diary I'm snickering. That stuff is so bitter and gross to me! I'm a firm believer in making choices you can stick with your whole life. Could I switch to organic everything? Sure! But I'm not sticking to it the rest of my life. And given that I make my smoothies…
  • I'll be honest, depending on what's causing the pain, it may get worse before it gets better. I broke my back about 15 years ago, which is where my problem comes from. Exercise helps, after a while, because it strengthens the muscles surrounding the problem area to help support it better. But while I'm firming up my core…
  • I'm stuck on a desk for 12 hours a night at the hospital. I frequently get up and do push ups off the edge (it's more a counter than a desk and the floor is nasty). Beyond that, make sure your activity settings are for sedentary or lightly active. There's lots of ways to get a little extra movement in. I like random…
  • Well, you can't spot reduce fat. So there's no particular cardio you should do beyond choosing a cardio you'll actually do. As far as tightening, that can be done, and will often reduce the appearance of belly fat. Planks are good, don't forget variations like side planks, good old fashioned crunches and sit ups help too.…

  • Exercise. I go walking in the woods and challenge myself to cut down my mile time or walk further than I usually do. I also started going to the gym to lift weights. I can't get the weightloss rate I want through diet alone, so I have to exercise to supplement my deficit through calorie burning. Changing my habits slowly,…
  • Holy thread necro batman! That being said, big boned and big frames do definitely exist. I've shoulders like a linebacker (as a lady) and while my rib cage is remarkably narrow, I have birthing hips to balance out my shoulders. If I ever get to goal weight (and I fully intend to) I'm very interested to see what I look…
  • If your DOMS comes with muscle spasms, adding a magnesium supplement (you don't need much, maybe 250mg) can help a bit. Other than that, adding a protein bolus the morning after my workout helped me. Eventually, the DOMS will calm down in general and your muscles will start repairing a little faster after killing a workout.

  • Make sure that sync is enabled in both of them. Short of that, try uninstalling/reinstalling. MFP has sync issues with nearly everything from time to time.
  • 700 over for the day? Thats equivalent to ... 3.2 oz. Seriously. 3.2oz. That's all. That's the amount of fat per calories you could have possibly gone over today. And when you divide that out over the week... that's an extra 100 over a seven day period. That's not even enough to slow down your weight loss rate if it's just…
  • I don't usually get bad cramps, or cravings I can't handle... but my god. The downside to strengthening your abs is your frequently strengthen your pelvic floor muscles too. Which means that I just got slammed with cramps so bad I kept doubling over with curses. I climbed inside a bottle of ibuprofen and plan to stay…
  • What does fennel taste like? I don't know that I've ever had it, but now you've got me intrigued.

  • Did it ruin your week? No. Did you log it? How far over maintenence did it put you? For the day? For the week? We have good days and bad days. I have all of today all planned out, and I'm probably going to bomb it by morning because I may decide that today, I do really want a chocolate bar. That's my choice. My worth isn't…
  • A few weeks ago I went hiking in my gym pants (did it all the time) and my bug spray was ineffective to say the least. The pants had mesh for breathability in the 'hip' area so you can guess which part of me I've been scratching! (Ended up with mild West Nile too, which is why I decided on proper hiking pants.) I went…
  • SW: 175 (Which I have revisited again and again) CW: 168 (Vacation weight! Pretending it's water...) Friday Morning GW: 163 (May alter if 6/4 weight is a lot lower than Friday) GW2: 158. As of Sunday (6/5) I'm down to 164.8. I figure that's good enough for me. Weigh in dates: Start of the month(6/01 Wednesday): 6/4 Sat:…
  • I'm not there yet myself (I remember the last time I was this weight, I've yo-yoed over the years), but from what I've heard, it can take a year or sometimes a little more before you stop being 'fat' inside your head and start realizing that the person in the mirror is really you. I finally dug up an old pic of me at my…
