  • Do you live in a cold climate? Right now people are running in the road in Wisconsin because the sidewalks are inconsistenly shoveled and/or salted and are dangerously slippery in spots.
  • I like to mix PB2 with Chobani yogurt and have that with fruit such as an apple or peach or even mix in blueberries. To me, it tastes about the same as mixing in regular peanut butter with Chobani but less fat and calories.
  • I fill a large glass with water and then put about 1/2 cup of frozen fruit in it. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries. And sip on that instead of eating. Helps a lot for me.
  • It is also very important to know that any form of exercise (easy or hard) helps when it comes to diabetes/pre-diabetes. Your cells are rejecting insulin and any exercise helps your cells to accept the insulin. What I'm saying is that even if you don't lose weight, walking or other movement does make a difference. Of…
  • I find that if I feel hungry at least once a day and don't overreact to that feeling by over eating then I lose weight. I think it's healthy to feel hungry once in a while. That is something new I've learned in the last 6 months or so. It's okay to feel hungry.
  • Great question. Really got me thinking. 1. Walk at least 5 days a week. One day a week walk for more than one hour. 2. Not eat deep fried foods. 3. Cut out all coffee including decaf.
  • I think it's a little extreme to simply state all vegetables are carbs. While broccoli and other non-starchy veggies contain a low amount of carbs they are not typically included in the carbs list by the American Diabetes Association. STARCHY vegetables are considerd major carbs by the ADA. The amount of carbs in…
  • Yes, a deficit in calories consumed vs calories needed to sustain current weight is what causes you to lose weight. Walking can help create the calorie deficit in addition to cutting calories. And, although creating a calorie deficit is what gets you to lose weight, walking will help created toned legs. Just seeking a…
  • Walking absolutely helps. I have a walking partner and we walk 2 hours once a week and our dogs come along too. I try to walk a few times in between the once-a-week two hour walk but don't always. This winter we missed several weeks in a row and I can both feel it in my body and see it on the scale. You can log your…
  • I agree. Take gradual steps in the right direction. Sometimes I get frustrated that I haven't lost as much as I want. Then I realize that I have not gained weight over several decades. The baby steps that I've taken have at least kept me from the weight gain per decade thing. When I hang out with my extended family I see…
  • I am not aware of any diet that can affect endometriosis pain. I do know that birth control pills can help keep endometriosis from growing/spreading. Since my surgery for endometriosis, the pills have helped keep it at bay.
  • My problem is that I snack at night (8-10) even when I'm not hungry. It's a mental thing; I get this insatiable craving. I haven't figured out how to get past it but I know it's sabotaging my weight loss goals. I've been stuck at the same place for months and I really think it's because I’m eating too many calories at…
  • Regarding evaporation of oil it's not quite black and white. Not all liquids evaporate in the same way. Here is a link to an interesting conversation on this topic: http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem03/chem03025.htm So, I'd say log it all. It is unlikely that you have evaporated any and the small amount in the pan…
  • Actually, breakfast does matter to your body. I'm a diabetic and I have learned that if you don't eat breakfast your sugars actually spike higher in the morning than if you do eat breakfast. If you are even remotely close to being at risk for diabetes, eat breakfast and move your body. You don't have to run or do anything…
  • Absolutely. I have a potato soup recipe where you roast garlic and carmelize onions FIRST, then make the rest of the potato soup. It really boosts the flavor. I would blend the roasted veggies with some type of liquid - chicken stock, vegetable stock, V8, boullion, or something of that nature. I'm not sure the veggies…
  • No, they won't be tough. I spread my cut veggies evenly on a cookie sheet and spray them with olive oil spray. Then I sprinkle a bit of salt and pepper and sometime rosemary and/or thyme. I roast them at 400 or 450 degrees for about 20 minutes stirring two or three times during the process. I find the important thing is to…
  • Put diced cooked chicken and salsa in a dish, pack some chopped lettuce in another dish and bring a tortilla. At lunchtime, dump the chicken, salsa and lettuce into the tortilla, wrap and enjoy.
  • I think it's great that you are trying to become a breakfast eater. Skipping breakfast actually results in a higher blood sugar level in your body later in the morning. It seems counter-intuitive but starting the day with a healthy breakfast can help you prevent a rise in your blood sugar levels later in the morning. If…
  • The diabetic recommendation for a breakfast is one whole grain, one dairy/protein and one fruit. With that as a guide you can make up so many combos! Examples: oatmeal, milk, and fruit (blueberries, bananas, strawberries, peaches, etc). tortilla, peanutbutter, and sliced banana or apple Sometimes I go way outside of the…
  • Great idea! I don't think of that often enough. Sometimes I make microwave scrambled eggs and put the eggs in a tortilla with a little salsa for breakfast. Maybe a bit of shredded cheddar. It's a quick meal that you can take in the car :-)
  • Take some time when you aren't running around with school and everything else to PLAN what kinds of foods will work for you and then stock up and be prepared. It doesn't all have to be salads. I get sick of eating salad every day. Some things I keep prepared... Tuna, small amount of crackers and cucumber slices. Carrots…
  • LOL. Just what I needed this morning :-)
  • Here is my take on it... sugar/carbs for a diabetic is all about controlling your blood sugar. Some people refer to "bad" sugar or carbs as those that tend to quickly increase your blood sugar whereas the "good" carbs tend to have less effect on the large swings in blood sugar. Other people seem to categorize bad and good…
  • Use the same recipies, leave out the yogurt and add more milk to compensate. I do that when I just don't have yogurt around.
  • I"m diabetic - sugar is not the enemy. All sugar is treated as carbs in your body. You need a balanace of carbs, proteins, and fats each day and throughout the day - don't pile up on protein in the morning and sugar in the afternoon - keep it balanced at all meals as much as you can. My take on it is that we should eat…
  • I heard an interview with a sports nutritionist on public radio a month or so ago (forget which program), and he said it is no better or worse than any other sport drink (but maybe more expensive). Additionally, he also said, if you aren't working out really hard for an hour or more, you don't really need electrolyte…
  • Make a lemon sauce (search the internet for recipe) to put on after cooked Make a curry sauce (search internet) to put on after cooked Slather on some bbq sauce - put on before cooking Pre-marinade in terriyaki Mix limejuice, oil, and some chili pepper flakes and make a lime chili sauce for a marinade. Don't marinade too…
  • I JUST finished watching the third part of the 4 part series. I'm really enjoying it. I have long ago given up soda, juice, sports drinks, etc. but it gives me ideas of new things to change in my life. It is very thought provoking as well.
  • Cheese, eggs, and summer fresh tomatoes (definitely not cardboard winter tomatoes).
  • I think there are two things regarding the don't drink your calories mantra- one is "liquid calories" - juices, soda, etc. which does almost nothing for you nutritionally and just adds empty calories to your diet. You are better off eating the orange with the fiber it contains rather than drinking the high sugar juice of…
