Alot of this depends what your goals are. You dont see alot of runners or swimmers benching at the gym because muscle is heavy and slows down their times. I am into more of a GPP focus myself (google "General Physical Preparedness")

I would stick with the polar brand, you can find them in the 70$ range on amazon... They are compatible with most the gym cardio machines as well so you dont have to wear the watch. There are certain models that are waterproof too if your into the lap swimming.

I do a pretty simple but butt kickin cardio workout with kettlebell swings. Its just intervals with 40s all out work with 20s pause. Guess its tabata style, I picked up a gymboss so i dont have to watch the clock.. after 10 minutes im a dripping mess :)
