300 calories isn't overly high if it is your biggest meal of the day and if you're doing exercise as well! If you pair it with a low calorie tomato sauce and/or some steamed veggies, it isn't unreasonable to have a meal that is 350 or so... if you're on 1,200 calories per day, you could have 3 meals that were 350 calories…

That's technically the way it works, but I totally agree with the others - muscle weighs more than fat and it is also very common for weight to come off more quickly at the beginning. We need to feed our muscles (especially after we work out!) and keep our metabolisms high!

I also find that using regular dressing on salads can give you some of your daily fat quota, instead of the 'fat free' or 'calorie reduced' that most dieters tend to use.
