  • Good for you for deciding to change your life in a healthy way. This site is great and there are so many things to learn. May I recommend logging your day before you eat? Someone gave me that advice when I started and it is sooooo helpful! This site is full of really nice people who want to help each other. Welcome!
  • Hey Kerri, Thanks for the perspective--I'm glad to hear they aren't all that! I've wondered if they actually burn all those calories that people say.... of course now I sound like sour grapes!
  • Interesting theory, AmyLou. Hadn't thought of that. But while I don't actually like heights and I have on rare occasions had motion sickness, this is definitely more of the chest pain variety. I walked around the track for a half hour this morning after being on the elliptical, just to feel better. A few weeks ago when I…
  • I swim and jog 3 times a week. My BMI is currently 22. I consider myself pretty healthy (now that I have lost nearly 20 lbs--thanks MFP!) but I can't do the elliptical. And I mean I CAN'T do it. Whenever I step on the elliptical within a few minutes my chest hurts and then my head starts to feel funny as well. I thought at…
  • Hey RhiannaMae, don't feel too bad. At least you looked it up before hand! I feel like a sucker too--because I ate some brownies today that were like SERIOUSLY crazy on the calories. I made them for my husband as a favor (he was supposed to bring some homemade treats to a Scout function) and I was good and only ate FOUR.…
  • I think it all depends on if you can do it. I see nothing wrong with it in theory--I do it myself--but if you are the type who after that meal cannot get back on the straight and narrow, then you shouldn't do it. I have a cheat "day", every Sunday from noon to around 7 pm. I had 20 lbs to lose when I started this MFP…
  • Oh, and the cell phone--gone 4 months ago. Every day after school he is home within 20 minutes of the final bell and then no phone calls to friends (and doesn't get to hang out with them either!). His life is totally boring and he complains about how strict we are, and our response is always "Start turning in all your work…
  • Oh I wish I had the answers! I could have written this post myself, only mine is a boy. Not dyslexic but has a vague learning disability (way back in kindie they tested him and for three years he qualified for an ILP but then tested out--it was some language processing issues as i remember) and even when he really tries we…
  • Iceprincessk25, in theory you are absolutely right. Hiding food, making a big deal out of what and when it can be eaten can really do a number on a kid's perception of food. HOWEVER, now that I am a mom of lots of kids (5), I can totally see the reasons. Teens eat like truckers and can easily consume $10 worth of snack…
  • This sounds familiar.....although my mom's efforts to keep food she bought for our lunches "in an undisclosed location" wasn't quite so draconian. But I got good at sniffing them out anyway  There was a saying I grew up with: There are two kinds of people in life; the quick and the dead. With 5 other siblings we all…
  • I've always heard that if you exercise (especially running) your appetite will be somewhat dulled. I guess I never really noticed before, because I never paid such close attention to my eating/exercise, but now on my 3 workout days a week I am significantly hungrier than the 4 days I don't exercise. (By the way, I used to…
  • You did it. And even more importantly, you did it HEALTHILY. Congratulations to you!!!:flowerforyou:
  • Hmmmm, interesting question. I currently eat by the clock, every 2 hours. I have blood sugar issues so by the time I actually feel hunger, I am already sliding. But I can see the value in working towards eating as a response to hunger. I do think as a newbie (and I still consider myself in that category) it is helpful to…
  • You know, I did the same thing when I got here in January! Felt a little stupid....maybe they should mention that in the login. Like, this is your login and ALSO your screen name. Just a thought.
  • Bummer about your jeans! People. They're the worst.
  • After reading about it here a couple of weeks ago, I too went looking for them and no luck. (Plus I don't get the paper so I won't be getting a sample box) Maybe they will start shipping them nationwide soon!
  • I have no idea.....but I just came by to say that picture of the baby wearing a bunny costume in a basket sure is cute!
  • BeGorgeous, maybe somebody has answered this already--I didn't read all the reply's, but JR sizes are three sizes bigger than adult sizing. So your size 11 JR would be the same as a size 8. Feel better now?
  • plussizemommy--you crack me up! That story was hilarious. And I can just imagine how frustrated you were. A little story for you, about our own loss of remote this week: My kids (all 5) have always enjoyed watching TV after school. Well, the other day we lost our dish remote and so NO TV. No TV=BOREDOM! My kids were pretty…
  • I can't explain it...but I do know what you are talking about. That is why I have one cheat afternoon a week (Sundays between the hours of noon and 7ish). I know that that is an unpopular "thing to do" around here, but hey, it works for me. I have 6 more pounds to lose and I did it through the first 15, no problem. I will…
  • Wow. That is really inspiring. I love that you are consciously creating new, better memories for yourself and not dwelling on negatives. THAT is super impressive (oh yeah, and getting healthy is pretty good too!) You must feel fantastic!! Congratulations.
  • Hi Julia! You are right about liking the food tracker! For me it is the thing I was missing in my other attempts. Even keeping my own log didn't work for me like the food tracker here does. I am need of more direction than just "eat fewer calories". Left to my own devices I would probably resort to eating my 1200 cals a…

  • Amy, when I saw this was you I had to reply, because I have noticed how caring and encouraging you are with everybody else! First. You inspire me. You have a long way to go and you aren't giving up! I don't have any idea about the tiredness thing you are experiencing, but it sounds like you will be discussing it with your…
  • Hey Bill, I don't have any advice for the running, but I did want to give you my advice for the boxed dinners. I eat a lean cuisine for dinner every night (I can't bring myself to cook for my family and then a separate meal for myself) but I always cook up a bit of broccoli or peas or brussel sprouts while my dinner is in…
  • Oh bless your heart. I will be praying for you tonight. You have so much going on right now, I would feel sick to my stomach too. I am so sorry you don't feel like you have someone whom you can confide in. When I am feeling completely overwhelmed and I don't even know where to start or what to do, I find writing things…
  • I can commiserate with you--it was 13 years ago when my husband and I moved into my parents' basement for a year but I can remember all those feelings you described, just like it was yesterday! While my situation was different, I definitely had problems between my parents and my younger siblings still living at home too.…
  • I think you do the same thing I do--I call it celebratory eating. The kids are in bed? Wahoo! Eat some ice cream. Finished a load of laundry? Break open a bag of chocolate chips! So now that I am a good girl and follow the "plan", what do I have at night (instead of a huge bowl of buttered popcorn!)? I save my 8 oz of skim…
  • Anybody else sick with a sore throat/head cold that makes you want to eat all day? I am getting knocked around with this bug and all I want to do is eat! I call it a hungry sore throat. Usually (well, for the past 6 1/2 weeks that I have been on MFP) I have a hard time eating all my 1200 calories in a day. But for the past…
  • Englishangel, you are gonna love it here. Dive right in and read the boards, follow the "rules" and before you know it, you will be amazed at your progress and the support you find here. I've been at it over 6 weeks now, and this is the "real thing". You can do it!
