  • Yup...I'm no expert. Thanks for the clarification.
  • I'm no expert (so someone please correct me if I'm wrong) but I believe you need a 500 calories deficit to lose 1 pound a week. If you only have a 150 calorie deficit then you would only be losing about 1/3 a pound a week. That's not much. I know you're not supposed to go below 1200 calories a day but that would be a 450…
  • So I guess you can see I've had a quite night...lol. I just realized I've taken up a whole page with my replies. Well, my shift is at an end so I'm heading home and off to bed. See ya'll tonight. I'm so excited about finding some night shift friends!
  • My husband wasn't very understanding at first either. He worked a job where he got off at 2pm and expected me to be up and ready to go for the day after only 4-5 hours of sleep. Silly me- I did it. We had only been married a couple of years so I was still trying to make him happy at my expense. Then we met some friends…
  • I agree. I've never been one to diet and I've packed on the pounds since my youngest was born (he's 7yo) This is the first time I've tried to log my calories and it's done wonders. MFP makes it so easy! I'm down 36 pounds and if I keep at it I'll make my goal of 50 pounds in a couple of months. Who knows I may be motivated…
  • Melatonin is what the docs order for our patients if they are having trouble sleeping. It gives them a gentle nudge in the right direction but doesn't knock them out. There's no "drowsy" feeling the morning after either. I've worked nights so long that I rarely have trouble sleeping (my husband says I've perfected the art…
  • I've been on this site for over 4 months now and just discovered this thread. I love it! Finally people that understand what night shifters go through. Day shifters can't handle it
  • That's my biggest problem with working nights. My unit is pretty slow most nights (oops...hope I didn't jinx myself...I work psych) I'd love to exercise during the long hours but I just can't sit around all sweaty!
  • I've been working night shift for over 20 years...15 of those have been 8 hour shifts. The few years I worked 12 hour shifts were horrible. I basically went to work, came home, slept and got up and went back to work. They were lost days. The several days off were spent catching up on my sleep. I had 2 small kids at the…
  • If you're by yourself...do some sit-ups or jumping jacks!
  • I've worked night shift for over 20 years. The other posters are correct. Just pick a 24 hour period and stick with it. If it makes more sense to you to go from midnight to midnight, do it. If it makes sense for you go 6 am to 6 am, do that. You might be putting your calories into different time slots on your days off due…
  • You should always cite an article or it can be taken as plagiarism. Better yet just post a link and say it was helpful to you. It did sound like it was her own words. But I agree with other posts. You can take the info and use it or ignore it. It’s all about choices.
  • Great work! Keep it up. I wish I had thought to take a before picture. I've always avoided the camera. I just bought some new jeans though. I went from a size 14 to a size 10! Yeah Lost 33 lbs.
  • Sounds like pumpkin custard instead of pie :-) Yum!
  • I almost forgot my favorite one…Pork and Sauerkraut 4 lean pork chops 2 cups sauerkraut 1 chopped onion Put the pork chops in the crock pot and mix the sauerkraut and chopped oinion and put on top of the pork chops. Let cook on low for 4-6 hours. Be sure to use the lowest setting. If you cook it too high the pork chops…
  • Green Beans and Ham My mother always made green beans and ham in the oven when I was a kid. I just put it in the crock pot. It’s great to have ready when I get up in the evening ( I work night shift). It's almost oo easy.... 3- 15oz cans cut green beans 2 cups cubed ham 1 chopped onion Salt & pepper to taste Just put it…
  • Sounds too good to be true...my recipe calculator says 181 calories for 1 slice. Please tell me I'm wrong!
  • I think planning is the key. If I haven't planned out dinner or snacks then I find myself eating whatever is at hand or going out to eat. Not good for the waistline or the pocketbook! I find when I plan my meals I can stick to the diet better.
  • I've worked night shift (11p-7:30a) at a hospital for almost 20 years. I know what you mean about eating to stay awake. I've gained so much weight that way. Now that I've got a plan I actually do better when I'm working than I do on my nights off. I plan to eat specific snacks throughout the night that I bring in, usually…
  • I work night shift at a hospital. I actually do better when I'm working than I do on my nights off. I plan to eat specific snacks throughout the night that I bring in, usually worth a total of 250 calories or less. I also drink at least 4 cups of water at night. Then I eat a small snack when I get home before I go to…
  • If you have more control over your eating during the day then start your calorie counting at midnight. Anything you eat in the "wee hours" counts towards the next day. You'll know when you wake up how many calories you have left and you can make better choices based on that. You might be able to control yourself better. Of…
