I personally can't eat in the middle of a workout... it makes my stomach hurt. I would recommend if eating mid-workout doesn't work for you, get a quality sports drink to sip on during your workout. It will provide sugar and electrolytes to carry you through the workout. I have had similar problems in the past, but this…

I have to agree with this, because each brand of machine is different... so level 5 for example may be a higher intensity on one machine than on another and calories will be calculated according to the individual machine AND the intensity you work on it... And if you were doing intervals, the machine would account for…

I couldn't agree more! Or, if you're not into commando and you find a thong comfortable, that is another option. Or, instead of wearing underwear, get some spandex shorts to wear under your workout pants...

If your resting heart rate is in the 80's, you still fall in the normal range. Mine is usually around 80 BPM, but I'm not at my peak fitness level. A few years ago I had a resting heart rate of about 68-70 and was in much better shape. Keep in mind that as we get older, our resting HR increases. If you have a HRM or if you…

Easy ways to up your calorie intake is to eat larger portions or choose foods that are more calorie dense. Add some healthy cheese to your lunch or dinner, put some peanut butter on your apple, etc. Embellish your meals for a bigger nutritional punch. Or add a healthy smoothie as a snack.

In my opinion, I would say that it helped you burn more calories, but it shouldn't be counted as strength training. When you're doing cardio, you're working different muscle fibers than when doing strength training. Your weights just added more poundage to your body, increasing the difficulty of your cardio workout. You…

I am so very sorry for your loss. Maybe you just need some more time to grieve before really getting into it. Everyone has a different grieving process... and everyone copes differently. Reach out to someone you trust and ask them to help motivate you and keep you in check. It helps to have someone physically there to talk…

[/quote] If you're doing 15 reps, I wouldn't take 1-2 minute rests. 15 repetitions is an endurance training type, but a 1-2 minute rest is a strength-power type rest...you'll see a greater caloric burn and better results with a shorter rest period of about 30 seconds, plus your HR will remain elevated. What I said earlier…

I guess the answer to the original question depends on how you're working out. The original poster stated that her HR pretty much stayed around normal while she was lifting. In her case, (if it were me, anyway) I wouldn't count them as calories burned because I would feel as if I was over-compensating for a workout. I…

The point of lifting weights isn't to burn calories during your workout... it's to build muscle and increase strength. (Which will help you burn more calories at rest).
-
Weight lifting is not considered an aerobic exercise. Even if you are lifting heavy weights, you're not burning much more than normal activity. I don't count them at all. If you're doing circuit training, though, you can count them.

The default setting for your protein is only 15% of your total calories. Most people do eat more than that. I changed my settings so that my protein allotment is 30% of my calories just because I could never keep it under what the default suggested. As long as your meals are balanced and you're staying under your total…

I will be 30 in August. And yes, I DEFINITELY want to be more fit for thirty! If you make a group, you can count me in!

I lost weight very quickly the first two weeks. I think most of it was water that I was retaining, as I never made an effort to get plenty of water in my system. Now I'm into my third week and the weight loss is slowing down to a more "normal" rate. I have felt excellent the last 3 weeks, so I'm not at all worried about…

OMG, I thought I was the only one that had dreams of filthy public bathrooms! In my dreams, all the toilets are clogged, the floors are littered with toilet paper and wrappers, and there are no partitions between toilets! And as far as trying to sit on the toilet, well, they are all slimy and gross! These are more like…

You'll probably find you can do more after your cardio. You need to get your blood flowing to your muscles before you do resistance training (sit-ups are resistance training!) You're probably less likely to get sore or suffer an injury if you do your cardio first, as well.

Here in Phoenix, on the other hand, we had a record high of 80 last week....

If you consistently went over your calories during the first two weeks and lost weight, then I would say that your caloric requirement is higher than what MFP has assigned to you. Now you are eating less and gaining weight, so your body might feel as if you're not getting enough to eat and it's holding onto your extra…

In that case, I believe that if you're comfortable with having your shake beforehand, then keep doing it! Each of us have slightly different needs and different tolerances.... so we all have to find what works best for us! :flowerforyou:

it's probably just waiting to be processed after your workout... don't get me wrong, protein can be used as fuel, but it just takes a long time to digest, so it's not giving you energy during your workout... There's nothing wrong with having your protein shake before your workout... but if you find yourself getting tired…

Protein takes a long time to digest, so it's not likely it will provide fuel for you during a workout. It certainly won't hurt you... but doing a carb load before a workout is more useful, as carbs are available to use for fuel much quicker than protein or fat. No matter the time of day, try not to eat something that is…

I agree... to an extent. If your strength training consists of circuit training and is fairly high intensity, then you do burn a lot of calories. (An example of intense circuit training is going from station to station on a timed routine, doing things like push-ups, lunges, jogging, sit-ups, jump rope, etc. with little or…

Your HRM is more accurate. The treadmill generalizes everyone into one lump category, even if it asks for your weight. It has no idea what your current level of fitness is, or how hard your heart is working. If you are out of shape, you'll burn more in less time than a conditioned athlete because your heart has to work a…

My favorite breakfast combos are: 3/4 cup Kashi cereal 1/4 cup 2% milk (I don't like milk, so I only use it to get my cereal "wet") 8 oz 100% pure orange juice 306 cals OR 2 boiled eggs 2 Banquet turkey sausage patties 270 cals OR 1 boiled egg 2 turkey sausage patties 1 gala apple OR 5 prunes 260 OR 280 cals

Lots of extra water to prevent water retention (and tea helps, too)... Filling up on low-cal foods when the cravings hit... My TOM was this weekend, too... It was the worst on Saturday and I couldn't get enough pain relief to even go for a walk - I spent most of the day in bed. I drank lots of tea, chewed gum and kept my…

LOL! You wrote "Yoda" videos!!! I'm no help, but it made me laugh... THANKS!!

I disagree with the warning to stay away from raisins and other dried fruits. There is nothing wrong with consuming some of your fruits dried - raisins are great added to cereal & yogurt or mixed with nuts for a trail mix. Yes, they are higher in calories per ounce than grapes, but all dried fruits should be eaten in…

Yes, Heart to Heart cereal is my favorite! Oddly enough, I'd never heard of it until I stumbled upon it in the chow hall while deployed in Afghanistan. It became my staple for breakfast, as it's very packed with nutrients and so tasty!! Somewhere I read that cereal is one of the only processed true "superfoods." Whole…

If you still have calories left that you can eat, why not? I personally see nothing wrong with eating before bed, in fact it helps me sleep better when I do it! Contrary to popular belief, eating before bed doesn't mean the food automatically gets converted to fat. You still burn calories while you're sleeping. If it's a…

Holy Cow, Fitness_Chick... I think that's the most inspiring post I've read on here! Very well said! ::flowerforyou:: ::heart::
