I completely agree with this! The best way to get me to do anything I lack motivation for is to remove obstacles. I got a membership to a gym that is right between home and work, I make sure all my stuff is packed and ready the night before, and actually to begin with I'm seeing a personal trainer even though it's a bit…

Here are some basics I do: Calf raises: stand on one foot, raise yourself up on your toes, then back down, then pull your toes up toward you, repeat (to strengthen the muscles around my ankles). Squats and lunges (try doing both while holding your skates for extra weight! Raise them over your head as you squat and either…

2013 is a crazy year for me. My personal and professional life has gone a bit crazy and I stopped skating for about three months due to illness and being busy, so I'm starting nearly from scratch fitness-wise and can't commit as much time to derby. My goals this year are to build my fitness up even better than it was…

We don't drill it a lot, but it's seen as one of those things you should be able to do, especially for recycling players further back when you hit them off, and backward blocking. I think as roller derby is taken more and more seriously as a sport, those skills we thought of as neat tricks are becoming more and more…

Same here! I managed to cut way down on sugar when I first started on MFP to the point where it got out of my system so I didn't crave it and it tasted really fake and cloying when I did have it. If you fall off the wagon, though, you do re-develop a taste for it, unfortunately. I think I managed by treating myself about…

Ooo, that sound tough but awesome! I'm definitely going to suggest this to my league! Do you repeat it a few times or anything?

I eat more on practice days but I'm not great at being scientific about it, so I just try to eat based on how hungry I usually feel. I eat light meals before practice and then a protein-y snack after (I admit I just eat lunch meat out of the packet sometimes!). Game days are a bit trickier because I have nervous tummy, but…

One of my many reasons is that I had a breast reduction when I was 21 but then put on enough weight that my boobs grew quite a bit. I want to lose weight so I can get my money's worth on that surgery! :)

Nice work, folks who are noticing an improvement! After a year of skating I finally got my 25 laps down under the 5 minute mark - you just have to keep at it, some of us longer than others! What helped me was focusing more on my technique than my speed. If you get your crossovers nice and strong and STEADY you don't have…

By the way, has anyone else discovered the thigh-killing activity that is doing squats while standing on your skate's toe stops? I think this makes a fun/horrible variation on normal squats! :)

I do flamenco as well. I find it's great for certain styles of belly dance (especially ATS/tribal fusion) to have at least a little exposure to flamenco. It helps with posture, strong arms with nicely lifted elbows, wrist curls, and powerful, intense, sudden bursts of movement. Likewise, belly dance helps me look more…

I work in a library, so luckily I can get away with wearing lots of woolly things and cardigans. I pretty much look like I'm made of wool today: boots, socks, thick tights, leggings, a wool skirt, long sleeve shirt and a thick wool cardigan. And that's not counting the hat, coat, scarf and mittens I put on to go outside!…

Man, I have the same problem as you even pre-weightloss. Shops do NOT make trousers for those of us with generous thighs but smaller waists. Any pair of trousers I can get on to my tree trunk legs is massive around my hips and waist, so I just wear skirts! It would be SO nice if some weight would come off my legs. Best of…

I've just started 3 weeks ago and still have a long way to go, but on non-skating days I try to do at least one if not all of the following: - Squats/wall squats whenever I am waiting for food to cook, queueing for the toilet, etc. - LOTS of planks/side planks. I'm still trying to get to the point of doing normal planks…

I totally agree with this one! I'm not anywhere near my goal weight yet but I have definitely made a lifestyle change. Three months ago I used to look at my really fit and healthy co-worker who always eats salad and think, "Oh man, how sad is that? He HAS to eat salad all the time and HAS to skip desert." Now I've started…

This seems great! I told one of the girls on the team I'm learning with about the workout and she seemed impressed! I gave it a go over the weekend and it's very challenging at first, but feels like it works all the right areas. I think I'll try to do it every day I don't have skating. Also, it takes very little time, so…

Set up a Wii Fit workout plan, do some more sedentary video-gaming, practice flamenco, then on Sunday I'm going to watch my local Roller Derby team practice in preparation for my first time skating in their beginner course next week. Oh, and sleep in/cuddle my husband! :)

For me it's more a matter of being able to sleep well. If I eat too late, I'm still digesting into the night and find it difficult to get to sleep. That does have a bearing on weight loss, but as far as I know the "no eating after 8PM" guideline is in place for people who have already had dinner by then! Your schedule is…

I love belly dancing! I really want to get back into it. It can be a great workout and because you do a lot of isolating of muscle groups, particularly in your torso, it's really good for getting a more defined, hour-glass shape to your figure. But no matter what size you are, people who teach or do belly dance tend to be…

Way to go! This is not as odd as you'd think! I used to buy sweets/cakes/chocolate bars on my way home from work, demolish them in one or two sittings, and then hide the wrappers at the bottom of the bin before my husband came home. It wasn't conscious, but I began to realise I was hiding the evidence of eating I was…

This is such a great time line! Congratulations on all your success in 2011 and here's hoping you'll reach all your 2012 goals and then some! Great work!

I'm not sure what my trigger was. I had/have lots of reasons for wanting to lose weight, but just kept saying I ought to and not doing anything. Then I think one day my desire to lose weight overcame my inertia and I was somehow suddenly ready to start. It helped a lot that a friend of mine was on MFP and recommended it to…

Wow! You look gorgeous! Congratulations on all your progress.

Nice work! I used to find it impossible to resist the sweets and cakes people at my place of work seem to bring in all the time as well, but there's been a Christmas cake in the tea room since yesterday and I haven't touched it. Way to go, us! Willpower actually feels pretty great, doesn't it?

Hello! I'm Kirsten, a 28 year old library assistant living in the UK (originally from Seattle). Today is my first day on MFP and this is my first forum post! This is precisely where I'm at. I struggled with the issue of WHY I wanted to lose weight for a long time before realising that I couldn't just spontaneously gain the…
