  • Late to this thread but another walking fan here. Walking got me moving. Hooray for that. I live a pretty sedentary life and the pounds kept creeping on. Little by little each year I was getting bigger. Started walking. Incredibly short distances and times at first. Literally short. Five minutes or so was all I could do.…
  • Can I write something here? I don't know where to write but I just want to put this down somewhere. Maybe it'll help someone...including me. Weighed 188 this morning after weighing 185.5 yesterday. What?!!! For several days my weight had been going down a bit or remaining steady. Felt fantastic about that. Very motivated…
  • I lasted a bit over one year and then quit. It was fun at first but got to be a chore. Sure enough, the pounds crept back on. I resisted as long as I dared to "get back into it" and just recently came back here to this website and have started counting again. And once again the pounds are coming off. It seems as though I…
  • Add me to the list of "feeling like I'm starting all over". Gee it's hard to stay on track. I counted calories faithfully for more than a year and saw excellent results. At one point I was 35 pounds lighter. But I tired of the counting (and the weighing and measurinv portions). So I stopped counting...thought I could…
  • Good for you for not giving up. You quit logging your calory intake for a couple months? Ha, I quit for more than a year and just returned three days ago. You did better than I. :) It seems that the only way I can get a handle on this weight loss thing is to become almost obsessive with it. I did well (lost 35 pounds) when…

  • I didn't know that about eating more carbs could be a stall trigger in losing weight. Thanks for the note. This might explain why I don't seem to lose when I eat a bunch of cracker-type snacks. I was still under or close to my daily MFP number but gaining a little. I'm going to watch that carb number closer. Thanks again.
  • The folks explaining the 3,500 calories in a pound of weight make such a good point. There's no way the lady who started this thread ate 7,000 more calories in one day...or even in a couple of days. Good posts, people. That reasoning helped me through a similar "down stage" just a few weeks ago. It helped me then so I hope…
  • Walking was got me started in this whole weight loss thing in the first place. I never intended to lose weight - just walk some to help make my blood pressure go down. One thing lead to another and weight loss just sort of seemed to happen. So, I wish you well. Like someone else said, take it slow and easy at first. Don't…
  • Congratulations. Signing up with myfitnesspal.com (MFP) is an excellent step in the right direction. Tracking what you eat in the food diary is fun and useful. It's helped me gauge the amount and the portion size of the food eaten and that has helped me lose weight I never thought I'd lose. So good luck to you. Art
  • I'm American and you can say "fat" anytime you want. No offense taken here. The person who started this thread makes good points. I have not spent much time on the forums but it makes sense what he said. People who succeed in losing weight obviously know what works. If you'll pardon a little rambling here's a story from my…
  • I've been weighing first thing every morning for half a year and look forward to it. Like you though it is discouraging to see the weight go up. But the number of times it has gone down has been much more often so I keep doing it. People have told me that I should only weigh once a week but I like the daily gratification…
  • It works and it's kind of fun to enter the food you eat here on this site. I've been tracking my food intake this since November and never miss a day. Good luck to you.
  • Excellent advice about using a food scale. It's so simple to just put the plate on top, turn the scale on, and plop down your food. I use mine a lot. Another point worth adding that goes right along with the original post....measuring out things like cereal was a shocker for me. What I had been placing in my bowl was way…
  • A dissenting opinion. No offense to those that have them, but to me they make a person less attractive. But hey...you gotta spend your money on something, so if you like them and want to have them for the rest of your life knock yourself out.
  • I read an excellent report about reaching a plateau just this week. It was long but good. The summary of it was that we have three factors we can control to lose weight - calories we eat, burning calories during exercise, and weight training (because more muscle burns more calories). When we reach a plateau AND still need…
  • Good for you. I tried just last week to jog for the first time and can't go more than about a minute before returning to walking. I hope some day to get up to 15 minutes like you. If you don't mind sharing, how long did it take you to get to this point? Did you start out with just a 1 minute jog, then walk some, then jog…
  • Congrats to all the people who've done so well since the first of the year...or since whenever you started. Great job just getting anywhere losing anything. It is so hard to do when we are constantly bombarded by TV ads that make everything look so darned appealing. It's amazing any of us have been able to resist. After…

  • I came online just now to write almost exactly the same type note. I've been sitting around the same weight for a while and feel...I don't know how I feel. I've not tried that hard lately. I've eaten way too many crackers and chips lately so no wonder I've not lost weight. But still, after losing so much (for me 35 pounds…

  • It sounds like you're doing everything right. Good for you. But it also sounds pretty frustrating not to lose weigt when you're doing all the right things. Our bodies are odd sometimes, eh? It must be comfortable where it is. Wish I had some answer for you but I'm sure you know all the things about muscle weighing more,…
  • Most of us have spent a lifetime associating food with good. The people bringing in the stuff likely mean no harm. They are just doing what they've learned and offering treats is a way to say, "Here, I like you and want you to feel good." A simple polite, "Thanks but no thanks" response is good enough. If they take it any…
  • Keep it going, Tiffany. The weight will come off. I plateued for a while (we probably all have) so it's common and YES, it is frustrating and downright discouraging. Just last weekend I was terribly unhappy with myself because I gained two pounds. So, I'm very sensitive to what you might be feeling. Just by coming here and…
  • The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. My favorite movie of all time. The Princess Bride (yes, I realize it is the complete opposite of the previous movie :) Journey to the Center of the Earth (the 1959 version with Pat Boone) The Man who knew too Little (Bill Murray) - hilarious movie if you've never seen it and are a Bill…
  • Half my family is from Forest. Anyone familiar with that little berg?
  • I've lost my weight without a goal. In fact, I didn't start out trying to lose weight at all. I started by simply trying to take little walks outside. SLOW little walks. Like 20 minutes. I bet I didn't go a mile...I just ambled along. It was something I could do and bound to help me. Never did I imagine I would lose 28…
  • kirstie, everyone has said good things. It all makes sense but it's still frustrating and disappointing not to see improvement after working so hard. Mighty disappointing. I feel your anguish....we all do...because we've all been there. Everyone who tries to lose weight faces scales that don't go down, or inches that don't…
  • Get a set of dumbells (the plastic kind that are just one weight). You can stand or sit and simply hold them at shoulder height (sort of resting them with your arm crooked). Then lift one straight up to the sky. Slowly lower it to that shoulder starting position and then lift the other up. Alternate over and over. Nice and…
  • I assume that you are drinking other liquids, right? Those certainly are needed. Some say it needs to be only water (the 64 oz. per day thing) while others say pop, coffee, etc. count. Certainly the pure water is probably better for us but as long as you are taking in enough liquids you're probably okay. Then again...what…
  • 61 here and I've lost almost 30 pounds in six months. That averages out to about a pound a week...just like what is recommended here on MFP. It's been easy. I don't know how come it has been so easy. I weighed close to 210 for fifteen years and never seemed to be able to lose anything. In fact, I had pretty much resigned…
