Welcome! Stick around and have some fun with us! Lifting trumps cardio for me, every time.

Hi, Darcy! Welcome to the group!

Welcome, Gen! :flowerforyou:

Diane, I had something similar happen to me a few months ago, and to be honest, I still haven't gotten over it. No Russian powerlifter involved, but still. The first guy I had chatted with in passing a couple of times. I knew he used to compete, can't remember if it was body building or powerlifting, so I felt he should…

I wear gloves and they don't really cause me any problems, but I have long fingers, so I think that helps. I made sure I bought ones that fit fairly tight, but they still bunch up under the bar sometimes. Have you looked into liquid chalk? I keep meaning to get some, but I haven't yet. Like Lishie said, you can do farmers…

Tell her *kitten*-to-grass squats are better than half *kitten* squats any day!
-
I don't have "knee issues", but I do have some slight pain, if I don't warm up before doing squats.
-
Ouch!

I just recently switched to the TDEE method, using a combination of my FitBit numbers and Scooby's calculator. I log SL under cardio, but only 1 calorie burned, for tracking purposes. Yep, like Stef said, HRMs are designed to measure steady state cardio, not strength training.

I don't really have the same problem(s) as you, so all I can offer is to say hang in there! I get really discouraged sometimes, because the older I get, the harder it is for me to lose weight. No more "I need to lose 5 lbs before such-and-such event". I have to work for every pound I lose. On the other hand, I don't have…

Since you've got your MacGyver hat on, maybe you could use the old yoga mat to put the bar on for DLs/rows. I'm thinking it might keep the bar from rolling?

There are lots of videos on YouTube that show how to use dumbbells for the different lifts. Sometimes it feels awkward using them, so videos might help. Welcome and good luck!

I started StrongLifts back in October, 2 months shy of my 58th birthday. I read New Rules and Starting Strength, watched tons of videos and had a few sessions with a trainer. I constantly work on form. Sometimes I get frustrated, because I don't progress as quickly as most of the younger ladies, but I've surprised myself…

I bought the book last week, but I'm not following the program yet. I did find a group on here that has a lot of information and ladies that are following it. Here's the link, if you'd like to check it out: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/forums/show/15150-strong-curves

I don't think you'll ever have to worry about tossing them in the dumpster!
-
I accidentally let one sneak out when I was deadlifting. After worrying that someone heard it, I thought "I'm officially a lifter now!". I haven't farted during squats, yet. Guess I need to work on my form. I could use a rocket booster sometimes!

For the first time in my life, I can honestly say "yes!". I started lifting back in October and found out I love it! I truly hope you can find an activity you love doing.

Those look pretty good! In your description of the video, you complained about not being smooth, but it actually helped me to see the two types of lifts. I'm sure with practice, you'll get the flow down! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for posting this! Sometimes it's hard to remember that deloading actually serves a purpose.
-
It's probably your body's way of thanking you for upping your calories! I would say you're losing fat. Like random said, lifting helps prevent muscle loss.
-
Thanks for the info, random. I've been doing an accessory day every 3 workouts or so. I do dips, assisted pull-ups and chin-ups, close grip bench press and a few other tricep exercises. Last accessory workout, I added some rows, lat pulldowns and some leg presses. Any suggestions for something I should add?
-
Random, would you giving some details of your workouts? And also, how you feel it helped you get over your plateau? I'd be interested in hearing, if you don't mind sharing.

I do StrongLifts 5x5. Here's a link to a great summary of the program: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/560459-stronglifts-5x5-summary. The link is on the SL for Women's group, so check out the rest of the threads, if you're interested. There's lots of good information.

Its easy to see you don't skip leg day! Nice work!

I just broke down and ordered some of the Trutein Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup.

Welcome and happy lifting to you, too!

^^^THIS! And, measurements mean more than a number on a scale. Take pictures and measurements. It took me about a month to see inches lost. In 5 months, I've lost about 5 inches off my waist.

I've seen so many people over on the main forums say power cleans aren't really a beginner move. Not sure if it's true or not, but they look a little complicated to me. I'd like to try them someday, but only with someone who knows what they're doing watching.
