I think it is disingenuous to equate how long the human body can survive without water or food with our water or fuel needs while running. The human body may be able to survive 3 days without water when sedentary, that doesn't mean that you can long distance run for three days without water. The exertion level, sweat…

I went to PT first, and he documented the issues, videotaped my gait, etc. and then referred me to an ortho.

Ah, good point. I also have to get shoes that have extra eyelets and lace them a particular way to keep them from slipping, especially with my smaller foot and lift.

Ouch. When I broke my toe I had not taken up running and was pretty sedentary, and it was a year before it was completely healed. Pam

I have heard that this can be a problem, have heard from others who get pain if they don't balance out the camber. Rather than crossing the road every mile, you could run there on one side, and back on the same side. One direction you are going to have traffic behind you, which is problematic, but maybe there is not enough…

- Proper double-layer running socks - Body glide or vaseline or another lubricant - Moleskin or 2nd skin dressings (I find moleskin slips, but the 2nd skin dressings stay put) on any hot spots or blisters - If you have shoes (such as Asics) that cause blisters in the arch, add gel insoles

On the restricted sugar and fruit -- is this because of fructose intolerance, diabetes, candida, or what? Because each of them have different restrictions you might be able to work around.

I understand that butter makes a slightly tougher crust, but lard would be an option for those who eat animal products. One thing I found this year was that you need to be careful of overmixing the crust, just like you would a gluten crust. Cut in the fat, but don't use your food processor/mixer. It will be tough and not…

I'm vegan, grain-free, multiple allergies. Feel free to look at my diary and ask any questions.

40F is still pretty warm, so just long sleeves and pants. Maybe a thin pair of gloves. If there is wind/precipitation, add a windbreaker and hat/ear covering. Down past 23F, add a windbreaker, hat/ear covering, definitely gloves, and if you are carrying a water bottle, make it warm water instead of cold. Down past 5F, add…

Great job! And that's not a bad time. I just ran my second, and I'm only down to 2:23, so as far as I am concerned, you are doing fantastic!

From my research, there are two diets to follow; one for maintenance and one during a flare. The maintenance diet is high fibre, the diet during a flare is low fibre/low residue. Searching "low residue diet" will give you more details. The most common triggers of a flare are dairy, caffeine, alcohol, and sorbitol. If you…

Celiac and multiple allergies, lots of gut problems in our household. What are your restrictions?

Sounds like us - varying members gluten free/grain free, vegetarian/vegan, allergies to nuts, pineapple, oranges, and various others. Add in extended family, and we've got soy, chocolate, some of the oils, etc. Then there's my friend that sometimes attends meal-centric church activities with me who can't have eggs, apples,…

You can say you're a pescatarian Or that you eat a plant-based diet Or that you eat "mostly" vegetarian But yeah, that seafood didn't grow on a tree. It was once a sentient creature.

You're my twin. I ran my second half on Saturday, and finished 2:23. It's going to take a while to get under 2!

Oh, rice cakes. We got these a lot before I had to go grain free. Topped with peanut butter and bananas. Mmmmm.

It seems like all of the worst advice I have heard has come from nutritionists. I really think we need some "alternative" nutritionists out there. Ones that don't rely on structuring a diet by the four food groups, but that can do a detailed nutrient analysis, are thoroughly familiar with food families (taxology, not food…

Lin needs some ideas for packed lunches, guys. Our choices tend to be: - leftovers - gf sandwich/bagel - soup - corn chips and refried beans/salsa - Subway veggie salad (watch out for cross contamination) - along with fruits/veggies/potatoes to round it out Our diet is a lot more restricted than just GF, so some of you…

The muffin recipe I usually use (of course you can sub any grated or pureed fruit or veggie for the pumpkin, and change around the mix-ins and spices to come up with something totally different). My own adaptation of a non-gf recipe: Fat Free and Vegan Pumpkin Raisin Muffins Makes 18 muffins Ingredients: 1 cup buckwheat…

My usual pancake recipe: Buckwheat Pancakes Written by Grain Free Living This makes a thick fluffy pancake that works well as a sliced bread substitute. Ingredients 1/2 cup buckwheat, freshly finely ground OR buckwheat flour 1 - 2 tblsp potato starch or arrowroot pinch sea salt 1/2 tsp bi-carb / baking soda 1/4 tsp cream…

No, no no! He's had a positive blood test and positive biopsy! Even if he doesn't feel any symptoms, gluten is eating holes in his guts. He can't have just a little bit. He can't have any!

Hang in there. It can be tough. I understand that for sure. A lot of kids who are "addicted" to wheat and won't eat eat anything else really change after gluten is removed from the diet. So just because he won't eat a lot of fruits and veggies now, you may find that changes once he has been off gluten. My son's symptoms…

Thanks! I'm told it was a really tough course (I've only done two, so what do I know?) Harder, of course, for the group that took a wrong turn and ended up doing 23 instead of 21 km.

No, they won't do rain checks. And it doesn't work if I have planned this week's meals based on the foods that are on sale, getting those foods next week or the week after doesn't help. I'm still stuck at the grocery store thinking "I planned four meals based on _____________ because it was on sale. What am I going to…

You're probably right. Eating 1200 calories while running is really not enough.

You're setting him up to be hurt by your attitude. You gotta be strong, momma. You have to treat this just as it is, as a medical necessity, not a social or emotional sentence. It's about food, not friends. He can still do all of the normal things that a 5 year old can do. You just need to supplement part of his diet. We…

Your doctor is behind the times. They used to think that only children got celiac disease, not adults, and that children outgrew it. This was because their symptoms would change. Not because they actually were cured. They would stop throwing up and losing weight on eating wheat, so the doctors thought they were cured.

I am grain free, vegan, with multiple allergies. I *only* cook what I can eat.

You're missing a word. Gained or lost weight?
