  • Excellent article -- thanks for sharing! I'm going to Google "metabolic type workouts" and think about replacing some of my cardio with that.
  • I like the idea of simple as well, as well as the idea of taking some measurements. My jeans have gone from waist 35" to 30" so I'm pretty sure we're in sync there. But "time consuming gadgetry"? LOL, honestly, is stepping on a scale and waiting 3 seconds too much effort and technology? The OP wants to know her body fat,…
  • Any number of scales will show you body fat along with your weight, and they are very consistent day-to-day if you weigh yourself first thing in the morning before eating or drinking. Any since they are so inexpensive now, I'm amazed that there are folks that still don't have one. For my weight loss journey, it's been a…
  • 3 years sober from dairy and wheat due to allergies, so it's been 3 years since I've had a piece of pizza or a cheeseburger! Dang. I do miss them but since my health has improved so much I don't feel bad about it.
  • They've got a really good turkey burger that has mushrooms in it and is really tasty. I get that without the bun and a side salad, no cheese, no croutons and no dressing. Just some balsamic vinegar on the side (not the balsamic dressing, just the vinegar). It's really filling and a great source of protein. The side salad…
  • I was on The Gong Show in the late '70's -- that classic (and horrid) talent show hosted by Chuck Barris. I wasn't a performer, I was in a marching band which acted as the "gong", steamrolling over a singer :-)
  • Two word review: Total. Crap. :-) I do not typically see very overweight runners. I do see many overweight guys at my gym who are really strong, although you can't see their muscle (although they obviously have lots of it) because of their excess body fat. There's an expression which I think is really true "Six pack abs…
  • Yeah, that's a feeling that most of us here have to deal with daily! Luckily, I have a family and friends and a community like MFP to keep me encouraged. I keep going because I like the way I look better now. I like the way I feel better now, I like the feeling of my body becoming more powerful and stronger now. I like…
  • Thanks for all the support! Bunch of questions around my eating 1,200 calories. That was definitely *net* calories (which is the way that MFP show you how many calories you have left). So, if I exercised 400 calories, I would actually eat 1,600 calories of food (1,200 + 400 exercise). that's part of why I learned to love…
  • If you've got a Jimmy John's sub shop near you, they are the best! They make all their sandwiches as lettuce-wrapped "unwiches". Such a great alternative!
  • Right on...great post. Totally great to remember all the short-cuts and "theory" we can engage in is no substitute for the basics -- eat less and workout more! (Oh, and as for your speed-bagged man-parts -- that is an image I did NOT need burned into my mind! LOL!)
  • I think the conclusions are WAY exaggerated. I do believe that it's key to lower your calorie intake regardless of the cardio calorie burn you get. 1,000 calories burned in the gym doesn't seem to be as effective as 1,000 calories you don't eat. For my weight loss journey (tracked for one year all calories and workouts) -…
  • The reality is this is not an exact science. No one here knows how many calories you need *exactly* because there are too many variables of your actual daily activity, how close you are to goal, your basic metabolism, the types of food you are eating, etc. Start with something like 1,200 calories and then see what happens!…
  • bump for the weight routine!
  • Wow...you all rock! Thanks so much for the great info. I'm soooooo dumb. A friend asked me if anyone replied to my question and, head held low, I shrugged and said "nope...no one has replied." I never thought to actually check! I totally mistakenly thought MFP would have notified me with an email or something! So, sorry I…
  • bumpity bump for later! looks awesome and like I'll have to decipher how to use it!
  • Egg Drop Soup -- really low in calories and high in flavor! Avoid empty carbs like rice and stick with small portions. Personally, I love PF Chang's so much that I just make a point of eating really light the rest of the day and plan on a little extra time at the gym :-)
  • From what I've seen on Biggest Loser, the way to lose that muscular definition is to eat a bacon cheeseburger smeared with both mayo and peanut butter and wash that epic combo down with a big chocolate bar. Trust me, after a few weeks of that, you will not be complaining about being too muscular :-)
  • Hahaha...yeah, there's no way you only burned 45 calories doing 45 minutes of sweaty cardio! Are you sure it didn't say 450 calories? That would be a lot closer! Or maybe it said "45 min."? Anyways, I'm 155 lbs. and don't get too sweaty on the elliptical and my burn rates about 10 cal/min. Like folks say, get an HRM. If…
  • You mention you are eating back your exercise calories. How are you calculating your exercise calories? Is there any change you are over estimating them and therefore eating back too many calories? You mention you are at 1,350 calories -- why don't you try dropping that a few hundred calories and see what happens? Also,…
  • I can understand why you are so confused...there are tons of different charts showing different numbers about what's "right". The American Council on Fitness says "21 - 24% body fat" for women in the "fitness" category. The Jackson & Pollock chart says "22 - 26% body fat" for women ages 31-35. So, those targets might be…
  • I stuck to 1,200 calories a day after exercise (which is 1,000 cal under my TDEE and amounted to a weight loss of about 2 lbs. a week). So, if I burned 400 calories at the gym, I'd eat 1,600 calories (1,200 & 400). I do cardio every day for a minimum of 30 minutes. Started out walking (two 15-min. sessions) and progressed…
  • W4 D3 L3: 45, 50, 45, 45, 90 = 275 total whoop whoop! Am I supposed to do that assessment test now after all those I just did? Or do it next time? I'm confused and I think too tired to do it now anyways!
  • >>I've put so much work into losing weight. I've passed up so many desserts, fast food restaurants, >>and tempting moments to get where I am today. I am 70 pounds lighter than I was in January 2011. >>Fabulous...right?? One would think so. Damn right -- I think so!! You've shown you can resist temptation and lose a ton of…
  • BTW -- As someone who suffered from IBS, bloating, gas, indigestion problems my whole life, I cut out all dairy and wheat and have no symptoms any more. Completely gone so I must have been very allergic and not known it. I only mention because you could try eliminating wheat from your diet and seeing if your symptoms…
  • Carbs store glycogen in the muscles, and muscles will use that source of energy since it's easier that converting it from fat. So therefore people think, avoid carbs and the body will burn fat. Here's the rub -- the muscles don't really deplete their glycogen levels unless you are an endurance athlete. So, if you are…
  • Looked at your diary and you aren't eating too much and there's nothing I'd cut and it looks like your achieving your goals. My only recommendation would be to add more protein! Try to have some protein at every meal, including your snacks. And focus on eating healthy foods, as you do, like salads (watch the dressings) and…
