  • Garmin connects calories in/out ads whatever your watch recorded as “active calories” to your mfp base goal (I’m thinking this is your 1560). Then subtracts however many calories you have logged in mfp. That is how it determines how many calories you are over/under. What mfp does is takes the total calories your Garmin…
  • Unreasonable expectations and lack of understanding of the process generally lead to frustration which leads to giving up. People expect to lose a minimum of 2 pounds a week (usually more). That’s not realistic or even healthy in most cases. So people expecting to lose 10 pounds a month but “only” losing 2-4 are…
  • I have tracked all my food & exercise for 8 1/2 years. I often refer back to older diary entries to see what I was eating during various parts of training cycles for various races (or other things) that have occurred over those 8.5 years. I have premium purely so I can review older diary entries (the free version is…
  • I have a heavy bag and a free standing bag (https://www.centurymartialarts.com/wavemaster-10162) I use the freestanding bag more often. I don’t really need heavy hand protection for it so it’s something I can incorporate into other workouts (or use on its own). It doesn’t provide the same resistance as the heavy bag, but…
  • I have both. I have an Apple Watch (series 4-which had reasonable battery life until the os update to go with series 5) and a Garmin Fenix 5s plus. The Apple Watch is a phenomenal smart watch and mediocre fitness tracker. The Garmin is a phenomenal fitness tracker and a pretty poor smart watch. So I guess it depends on…
  • It depends on where you are and the resources available in your area. Where resources are stretched thin and test kits (and other things) are in short supply, tests are being used for those entering an inpatient setting (where it’s critical to know). In other areas - where resources aren’t so limited, testing is more…
  • It’s $100. OMG.
  • For a lot of us who live in more urban areas that are already at or beyond hospital capacity, there is strong messaging to wear a face covering when outside - very especially (but not only) in areas where social distancing is difficult. In more urban areas or places with limited safe spaces for walking/running/biking, it…
  • Do you mean the “if everyday were like today, in 5 weeks you’d weigh...” numbers? If you consistently have the same “net” calories most of the time, I found the number to be not too far off - especially earlier on when I had a lot to lose (and my deficit was larger so 100 calorie difference wasn’t a HUGE deal). But having…
  • I’ve been close to 80k several times. None of those things he describes have happened to me. Especially when most of those steps were on a treadmill (which is softer and more forgiving than asphalt or concrete). Bleeding feet/ankles at less than 10k? Blisters? What was he wearing? Was he even remotely prepared to cover…
  • We had to email some kind of record of our activity and they will ship out the swag. I sent mine and she replied “great. I’ll add you to the results”. The what now? I guess I’m taking that whole finish times live on the internet forever in a WHOLE new direction LOL. The pictures were totally worth it.
  • It really is incredible. That’s why it’s on my list too. I am glad I was able to do some of it, and in a VERY leisurely fashion (including full potty stop at a regular bathroom with indoor plumbing and hot water and everything LOL). I can’t wait to see the rest. The Arches Half Marathon (which is in October and put on by…
  • It really was fun. I hope people can enjoy even though it’s a ... non-traditional race report LOL.
  • Yeah. I’m hopeful but not optimistic for the May race. I don’t even know if the state would give the race company an answer in time for them to prepare. That isn’t meant to be so doom and gloom sounding. Just that it’s a big race so if the state doesn’t decide something until a day or two ahead of time, I don’t know if…
  • I already work at home and my gym is in my basement. Under normal circumstances I can go for days without walking out the door of my house. The impact to me is that stores are either closed or on limited hours (which are my work hours) so getting food is a challenge. The stores that are open are mostly sold out. I have…
  • And I know it’s not a real race but hardly anyone is running any real races so I’m doing my best to stay in the spirit (for me). And keeping my fingers crossed for my next possible-on 5/16 (5 days after the current “no gatherings more than 50 people) ban expires).
  • My actual race was cancelled but I went and did the virtual option anyway (as did many others). I did opt to drop to the 5 mile distance (since not a real race). I also want to mention that when I left there were a couple of cases in NY. When I came home, CT is in lockdown, everything closed, no gatherings of more than 50…
  • My half in Moab was cancelled last weekend. They offered a virtual race option. I (and many others) went anyway (travel was already paid for/only partially rebookable) and did the virtual on pretty much as close to the actual course as was safe. CT, NY & NJ have all banned events with more than 50 participants for the next…
  • Oh? It’s an event to watch? I was thinking it was an event you all were participating in. My mistake. That should be refunded. Races you (or many) are participating in are not all offering refunds (deferrals are common). Even for the major marathons with 50K plus runners.
  • We got updates that they were going to send something out in the coming days as well. Turns out they were trying to convince the county that people healthy enough to be running a half marathon are probably not fighting off a massive viral infection (vs a random gathering of whoever), and everything else was…
  • @Avidkeo i saw somewhere (Can’t remember where) that whatever prediction you have, add 20 minutes for your first marathon. I find McMillan to be pretty close for me - and the 20 minute addition for my first was also pretty much dead on. My Garmin thinks I should have finished both marathons almost 90 minutes faster than I…
  • My next event is 5/15. I’m not signing up until the last possible moment. My cancelled race offered a virtual or 65% for another race. I don’t blame them. Others in my email are offering deferrals. I haven’t seen any refund offers yet (but these are pretty imminent races so everything has already been paid for/done and…
  • The race I was supposed to run this weekend was cancelled (along with about 284995050605 others according to my emails). I wouldn’t count on a refund though (especially if the event is cancelled close to the date) - unless there’s an existing refund policy for the race. But many travel providers (airlines, hotels, etc) are…
  • Looks like a beautiful run in all the ways.
  • LOL my pup is broken (she’s known as Demon Spawn...). When I had hand surgery she started gnawing on my split like I was a walking rawhide bone. And yes-overtraining syndrome. Over a period of months it got to a point where it has gotten my hormones and nervous system a little out of whack. And my period of training ended…
  • Oh goodness. I’m never “sure” I’ll never see it again. I have had water weight gains as much as 18 pounds over a vacation. I just weigh every AM and put whatever it says. I don’t have the mental energy to devote to anything beyond that.
  • I wouldn’t skip a 20 mile run if there’s any way to avoid it. In a traditional plan they are big for physical and mental prep for time on your feet. But if you can’t avoid skipping it; it’s not like you’ll die or anything. A lot of plans only have one 20 mile run anyway.
  • The Canyonlands half has just been cancelled. I was optimistic since it’s in Moab (not exactly a big metropolis and no major airports) and not an enormous gathering. This is really for the best for me physically. OTS is fur real. I ran 7.5 this past Saturday and it felt like I’d run 20 the day before (it was my second run…
  • Oh my heavens. That’s a lot. I’m sorry.
  • You are AWESOME! Very well done!
