  • 2:15 is an awesome time for your first half marathon! With my first 1/2, I found it was mostly concentration on the running basics that held me back... posture, breathing, pace. Congratulations on finishing- good luck on your next one- now you have a time to beat! I have my first full scheduled for October, and I have to…
  • Also keep in mind- if you do a lot of cardio type exercises, you muscles will retain glycogen as well as water to use as fuel for your next cardio session. Random days off should keep your body guessing and not retain as much
  • I had read about a '100 Burpee Challenge' on another website... Basically day 1, 1 burpee, day 2, 2 burpees, etc. You don't have to do them all at once, but you have to complete each day. If you miss a day, you do the missed day's burpees the next day... in addition to that day's burpees. This seems like a way to slowly…
  • I live on a continent, which technically is a big island... but I definitely get island fever every now and then!
  • I wonder if yoga or other non-impact exercise (elliptical) would help... if it does, it may give you a little variety in your exercise/pain management. I had some trouble with my sciatic nerve a while ago and the elliptical allowed me to exercise without pounding it by running. Yoga also does a good job of stretching…
  • Having the body of a 20 something in my 40's, feeling good, having energy, doing things I never thought possible... Oh, and I think I'll be around to enjoy it in my 50's and beyond (good lord willing!)- That is what motivates me!

  • Training for my first marathon... I run 6 days a week, varied distances up to 8 miles during the week. A mid range run on Saturday (6-10) and a long run on Sunday (8-15). Trying to get my base mileage up over 50 per week. Goal for the first marathon is to finish around 4:30. (training for a 3:45 pace, but know that will…
  • I am set to lose 2 pounds... I run a lot, work on my feet all day and sometime get to the gym. Running for an hour gives you an extra 800 calories or so!
  • It is possible and you can do it! Some recommendations though... 1) Take it slow. Running is not about beating a number for pace or speed (unless you are racing a 5k, of course). Don't try to run too fast. Run at a speed that you can breathe fairly easy and could talk if necessary. Running slower and longer is better for…
  • Good advice from the posters above... Adding to that... It is not a race!!! Run at your pace where you are not killing yourself- no matter how slow! You should be slightly winded when running, not muscles burning, huffing and puffing! Slow allows your body to burn fat, not just sugar in the blood. Slow also reduces the…

  • I track my Calories taken in and my exercise from MFP in a separate spreadsheet. If I eat all my calories back from MFP, I tend to plateau, but if I only eat around 75% of the exercise back, I lose pretty much as expected for my deficiet. So I would agree that the numbers are about 25% inflated from what I have experienced.
  • Yes, Yes, YES!!
  • Long, slow paced runs seem to work for me in fat burning. The kind of pace where you say 'I could go all day at this pace!'. Breathing is easy, you could hold a conversation and your legs don't get as tired. It may be 12, 13, 14 minute/mile pace or more- that is up to your fitness level and will improve over time. Theory…
  • I'm in! 13.7 miles so far!
  • calorie tracking
  • I initially read the 'Dunkin' diet- Coffee and Doughnuts! I was in!!!
  • Yeah, my Personal Trainer told me this too- 700 miles ago when I started running! He told me working with weights is the best way to get fit and I only needed to so cardio 2 times a week for 20 minutes or so... Funny, my chiropractor doesn't have a problem with running, as he is a runner too! The truth is, I learned how to…
  • Very nice!! At 44, I just started running 6 months ago... Never too late! I watched a video of an 89 year old finishing the 2011 Ironman (his 20th time) the other day... We got a lot of life left in us! Congratulations!
  • I am training for the Detroit Marathon in October... will be my first. More planned for next year including a Half Tri and an Ultra Marathon next year! Damn that bug bites hard!
  • Also- Potassium seems to help (Bananas) As far as running goes- make sure when you do return to run slowly and strike on the mid sole, not the heel. The jarring on heel striking is what always gave me problems running in my shins, knees and hips Good luck! (Cant stress enough- rest, elevate and ice!

  • Well done! Nice finish time - Divas rock!
  • Me and my wife have been in your shoes... Bad eating habits are easy to form and hard to break- but it can be done! It may take a while, but changing the habit is easy- just watch what you eat and LOG EVERYTHING! the only rule to cheating is not logging it in. You will find that it gets easier to budget in your favorite…
  • It may also be related to your breathing... If you have irregular or hard breathing during your runs it can cause the muscles to spasm. I have to concentrate on keeping a nice steady rythm breathing while I run or I get them too. In any case they are painful at worst, but not really a problem to your overall health and…
  • Ice cream is my favorite!! I've had it twice this week and loved every bit of it! Congratulations!
  • I had been a gout sufferer for years and have not had a flare up since I started with my new lifestyle diet- which includes a lot of meat and vegetables. I got a lot better after seeing a chiropractor... no more heartburn, gout, migranes- all gone! Running has felt really good and I have noticed my calcium buildup on my…
  • 47 - 50 every morning.
  • Damn! You are on to me again?! I always have my headphones on when working out alone... music turned up, everyone else tuned out and ignore the creepers!
