I use the average HR given by my HRM and use the following to calculate my calories burned: http://www.livestrong.com/article/78365-estimate-calories-burned-heart-rate/ (I see someone else posted this as well.) Breathing, yes, but it does not (normally) get your heart rate into the cardio zone, so the calorie burn is a lot lower. That does not mean it doesn't have amazing benefits!! I haven't actually changed my goal, but I make sure I eat every single calorie I earn from working out! I also don't fret if I am within 100 calories at the end of the day. I will tell you I just had a struggle with this. I was sticking to the minimum, but working out burning 2000+ calories per week. And I wasn't losing, or if I did it would gain the next week.
