  • The method which is working for you (exercise like crazy but don't explicitly count calories against it) led to my becoming seriously overweight, so I am expressing a different viewpoint.
  • It sounds like you have a lot of the same issues I do, specifically the desk job. Feel free to friend me. I've switched to a standing desk, which I don't think burns a lot of calories but does improve my flexibility and makes me feel far less tired (after some getting used to it!) I now stand from 8 to 3-ish, and then sit…
  • Sorry to hear you have such troubles with food! I don't have much time for exercise and I don't enjoy it. I know that some people do enjoy it and have lots of time for it, and therefore have to worry about calories less than I do. Guess what! We're all different! You're not unhealthy, and neither am I! Gold star for you…
  • Exercise burns food consumed, lol. And yes, everyone should use whatever mental tricks work for them. For me, the currency model has been life-changing. Exercise = money earned, food = money spent. Used to be in debt, now earning more than I make and losing for the first time in my life. And no eating disorder! Just math!
  • A donut is not a big deal if you're a 200 lb musclebound guy who works out every day and maintains at 2500. For me, it is 25% of my calorie allotment for the day, so I darn well better plan for it.
  • The only place where we agree is that it doesn't make sense to eat a donut you didn't really want and then feel like you have to "exercise it off". I prefer to pre-plan. It's probably smarter to do the math and then decide you can't afford the donut after all. But if you want a donut and you want to achieve your goals,…
  • I'm sorry if you struggle with eating disorders. It's not a problem for me. I have my caloric goals set for my standard exercise levels, and then I eat more on the days I work out. That's because my exercise is sporadic AND my calorie level is set very low, so I need more food with even a small amount of exercise. If i eat…
  • Welcome back! Feel free to friend me. It sounds like you're going through a rough patch. You probably need someone to talk to. Maybe try another form of self-care. Go for a walk with some music you like ... have a cup of tea or take a nap ... take a mental health day from work ... get a pedicure ... retail therapy ... take…
  • Panda Express or other chinese joints will sometimes give you mixed veggies instead of rice or noodles. Add on one or two non-fried entrees and you're good to go. Other ideas are Nando's, teriyaki, or Indian with no rice. But yeah, if we had chik fil a here I would totally eat that.
  • It's like saying "Working to earn money isn't the healthiest way to approach the relationship between your work and your financial state. You should work for the enjoyment of it and because it's improves your mental state." I like my job more than most people like their jobs, but I wouldn't do it if I wasn't getting paid.
  • Actually, making this equation is the only way I've managed to lose weight after years of unsuccessfully trying. Otherwise it's just guesswork. This is the basis of CICO. Not all of us actually enjoy exercise. I exercise to burn calories and "earn" food.
  • I didn't read the article, but I definitely see a lot of people overestimate their burns. I gained a ton of weight (and unwanted muscle) from doing long, intense workouts and then eating to hunger levels after because I thought I could "afford" it. 3 hours of strength training still doesn't "buy" you a bacon cheeseburger.…
  • I didn't read all the whining and moaning about how you can't lift things as heavy as other people can lift. But you are super sexy. Except for the whining and moaning. Some guys never really get bulky. Fortunately, some women like their men slim and toned but not all jacked up.
  • BMI is just a number used as a poor estimator of body fat percentage. It is not a magical guarantee of good health. Consider that your BMI also varies by the amount of muscle you have, your skeleton/frame size, and the length (weight) of your hair. Set your goal to a number where you think you'll be happy with how you look…
  • The pretzels have very little nutritional value and the carbs probably make you hungrier. The yogurt also has calcium, which you need. In general I'd choose protein over carbs, but if the pretzels are satisfying and help you stick to your plan, there's nothing really wrong with them. If you have too much body fat (and it's…
  • Best evidence that it doesn't make a bit of difference: if there was even the tiniest shred of evidence that exercise worked to prevent pregnancy or induce miscarriage, you'd see 18 year old girls frantically doing jumping jacks every Saturday and Sunday morning. But they don't (nor do any of those dumb women's health…
  • I agree with the first half, but not the second. Appropriate ab work is absolutely (ha!) critical to postpartum moms - more important than full-body strength training until the abdominal muscles are repaired and back to pre-pregnancy strength. Just keep it gentle so you don't strain your back.
  • Based on your profile picture, I'd say it's not phony. You're a good looking guy, even with the extra weight. You've got a great smile and nice eyes. And that's just appearance. I don't know anything about you as a person. Your friends are right to encourage you to date. Internet dating sites are fantastic for getting to…
  • Good post. I used to think of excuses to drive for errands, but now I try to make time to walk and am disappointed when I'm so crunched for time I have to use the car.
  • As several people have pointed out, liposuction isn't for weight loss. It's actually kind of a dangerous surgery. And you will absolutely regain if you don't change your habits. Surgery is never the easy way out. You need to eat fewer calories. You don't need exercise. The advantage of exercise is that it gives you more…
  • It's really best to avoid hard liquor if you're not a big drinker. Next time sip on a beer and have a full glass of water between each alcoholic drink.
  • Sadly, most women are as stupid about men's height as most men are about women's weight. However: - many women are as short as you or shorter. A lot of women are uncomfortable (for some stupid reason) being with men taller than them, so short women should be fine with your height. - many women don't care about height one…
  • If you're concerned about mercury in tuna, you probably want to avoid brown rice due to high arsenic levels. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine/2012/11/arsenic-in-your-food/index.htm#chart Otherwise, check your macros and calorie levels. Eating the same food every day will probably leave you lacking something.…
  • Stupid fat hobbit! You ruins it!
  • Make a dessert and let your guests choose their own portion size.
  • I agree with 'eat back half'. Calories burned estimates are always way too high. 3 lbs in 7 weeks is not "nothing". For one thing, you're at better than maintainance now where before you were gaining fast. Things are going in the right direction, and that's what counts. Sounds like you're doing great! Good luck!
  • Low carb works well, but once you're on it, you really can't cheat. It has to be under that level of carbs all the time, no exceptions. One potato will throw you off track for a week or more, and you'll regain all you lost and then some. It's completely unlike low-cal dieting, which is more forgiving. Good luck to you!
