  • There should be moments when you're airborne while jogging. The gait is the same, it's just about speed. And no, there's no magic number where you go from jogging to running. It's relative to the individual. I was out running one day when this Kenyan looking dude turned onto the road in front of me. He looked like he was…
  • Yeah, the sprinters have big legs because they do squats and other exercises in the gym aimed at developing the power in their legs. The endurance runners don't need the same kind of power and any superfluous muscle will slow them down, so they don't work on developing it. In training, both sprinters and endurance runners…
  • I agree that listening to music for its own sake while running can be very distracting. Instead, I have a play list that is all the same tempo, my target for stride rate. That way, I can concentrate on my form and breathing and know that my stride is right as long as I'm hitting on beat. When I started, it helped motivate…
  • Yeah, this. Being ripped has literally zero real world benefit. Being strong and being fit on the other hand... Why do so many body recomp enthusiasts believe that everyone has the same goals as them? I would like to have a visible six-pack, but I'm not going to pretend like it would benefit me in any real way. On the…
  • yes, yes, no, yes, yes, yes, no, yes, cost, no, yes, no, no, no, yes, no, no, yes anything else I can help you with?
  • I'm sorry. I haven't read even a little bit of this thread, but I just had to tell someone about the awesome lunch I just had: I got one of those huge burritos from Chipotle, complete with evil white rice and cheese. With it, I ate a whole bag of their tortilla chips and washed it down with two pale ales. Total calories:…
  • This is something I've learned this year (thanks in part to some helpful MFP friends). I used to believe that I had to push myself harder in order to get faster, but I've discovered that the opposite is true. When I slowed down all of my runs and seriously increased the distance (slowly and carefully) I got faster more…
  • I just wanted to say that I got beat by a 9-year-old girl in the only 5K I ran this year. She looked 7. Also, I just read this, and thought it was pretty interesting: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/04/sports/too-fast-too-soon-young-endurance-runners-draw-cheers-and-concerns.html?emc=tnt&tntemail1=y&pagewanted=all&_r=0
  • I used to run every run with my heart rate around 170, and I definitely improved. This year, I've tried hard to keep my heart rate under 145 for most of my runs and close to tripled the amount of miles, and I've improved even faster. Now, my "easy" pace (heart rate around 145) is as fast as my 170 pace was for most…
  • 90.4 miles for me in October, with 1 marathon, 1 week taper and 3 weeks of recovery.
  • This. You're not going to burn less calories as you become more efficient (at least not many). Your calorie burn is based on the activity you're doing, not your heart rate. We're about the same size and my target is 1800 a day, too. I eat back all of my exercise calories, though, so I usually eat at least 2300 a day. Some…
  • I'm looking at a 15-mile trail race in January and then a 5K that's mostly trail in June and a 40-mile trail race in October (my first ultra!).
  • Having only broken a 7-minute mile twice in my life, I'm just super amazed at the way you ended this race! Great job!
  • That's what I always thought, until I increased my distance significantly this year. I've learned that by increasing the amount that I'm running at an easy (conversational) pace that I'm getting faster even without doing much speed work. I'm faster than I've ever been and I hardly ever run fast. Instead, I run more. OP, if…
  • Fantastic! That's some impressive mileage!
  • Yeah, cardio and strength training are both really important, and caloric intake seems to be the main thing. I spent 30 hours running last month to prepare for a marathon. If you want to be an endurance athlete, more than that might even be needed. If you want to look like Arnie, you should be spending that time in the…
  • I've got one: Don't start out on your race faster than you intend to average. This will be harder than you think, especially with all the people and excitement and adrenaline. Start more slowly and build to your pace and you'll be stronger at the end.
  • So, where is this exactly?
  • No, I don't believe I am confused. I have definitely gained fitness and speed without speed work (I did run a lot of hills, because they're awesome, but I did them even more slowly than I ran on the flat) and have made these gains at a faster rate than I did when pushing myself every time. For years, I ran 2 to 3 times a…
  • To the OP: a high-quality heart rate monitor may help. Mine isn't super accurate, though, so I just log the time and distance and know that I'm getting a little extra deficit there. I do the same when I push the stroller. As long as you're not trying to have a super small deficit, it should be okay.
  • This year I slowed way down and increased my miles and got fitter (and faster) more quickly than I did while running less and pushing myself for every run. I'm faster than I've ever been and most of my runs are at a conversational pace.
  • I ran 170 miles in September, my most ever. My first marathon is on Saturday!
  • I went through the program a few months ago. It helped me a lot. I went from doing maybe 40 or so to doing 65. I want to try again next year to see if I can get to 100. I'm about to start a 20 pull-ups plan.
  • Congrats! Plenty of time to train for it!
  • I like to saute it with a little garlic and then sprinkle lemon juice and ground cayenne on it. The whole bag cooks down pretty small and it's super tasty, especially with chapati.
  • I hated running the mile. I was always the slowest guy in my PE class (literally, every single time). Senior year, I finally beat all the girls (still the slowest guy). I had to walk a few yards on that one and finished around 7.5 minutes and almost threw up at the end. Now, I can run that fast while pushing a 30+ pound…
