I've read this in a couple of books written by ultra runners (don't remember which). I don't know what (if any) science is behind it, but there's this contention that a small amount of carbs before (or during) an otherwise fasted long run will stimulate fat metabolism.

I know I'm late to this thread, but I just wanted to say that my personal rule is that I don't carry water for any run shorter than 15 miles. It's totally unnecessary (even at high temps). That means that I haven't carried water on a run since my 40-mile ultra in 2013. During all that time, I've only stopped at one water…

Maybe I'm doing this math wrong, or maybe it's because your example is over 100 pounds of loss? I have about 60 pounds to lose to get to what I think might be my "ideal" weight (150 pounds). The first 3 TDEE calculators that came up say a "very active" 150-pound man would burn 2711 calories per day. That's 720 calories…

I think this is excellent advice! I haven't actually tried it, because I find it conceptually easier to follow MFP's 500 calorie deficit, but it seems like a great way to beat the "inevitable" gain when you go back to eating maintenance. Also, I'm not sure how accurately I could predict what my ideal self would eat. I…

Nice tattoos! Great job maintaining a healthy lifestyle and thanks for the inspirational story!

Would love more running friends! I'm trying to build back up slowly after a pretty decent year last year. I'll be shooting for a sub-2 hour half in the fall, but just doing easy miles right now.

I started running regularly about 10 years ago, but hadn't done much for the past few years. I got back into it in 2020 and had a decent year, but didn't make all my goals. I tend to set high goals and then not quite get there. This year, I'm going to try and change my attitude toward running. I'm not setting goals or…

I've been wanting to learn yoga and my counselor recommended her. I just took a look at her channel and I'm going to give it a shot.

I'm not a doctor, but heart rates vary a lot and it shouldn't be dangerous if you feel fine. I used to stay around 170 when I ran. For aerobic fitness, though, it's counter-intuitive but you'll progress faster if you slow down. The reason for this is that when you push yourself, a larger proportion of your energy is coming…

Missed my goal last month, too, so trying for 100 again.
-
Fell short in September, so I'm shooting for 120 this month.

I ran a 40 last year and got frustrated with the slow pace early on. Somewhere around mile 4, I had fallen in behind a couple of guys that were just clearly more fit than me and they were running with a girl that had no shoes (she did the marathon distance). After a really slow split, I decided to pass them and hit out on…

I'm clearly less experienced than you, but I don't see why it would hurt. During a normal training week, aren't you running more than 5K hard? I think as long as you do the race instead of another hard day it should be fine.

I was actually out running during the first plane and the attack on the pentagon. My grandfather drove by and told me, but what he said made no sense to my run-addled brain. By the time I finished my cool-down, I had processed what he had said and got home and saw the second plane hit.

I ran my first ultra last year (trail 40 miler) while spending 7-8 hours every day as a stay-at-home-dad and then 4 nights a week working 8-10 hours as an emergency vet tech. I was only able to train to finish, with my biggest week being around 50 miles. I had to do a lot of miles with my son in his stroller and then did…

Even though I failed this month, I'm shooting for 150 again! I'll need to average that much for the rest of the year to break my yearly total PR, which is the only PR I still have a chance at this year. Had to work all day today, so no chance at a run, but I'm thinking about a tempo run (sans stroller) tomorrow.

Well, I ended up with 87.1 miles for the month! I set my goal based on the two weeks in a row that I ran 34 miles last month, but I followed those with a 14 and a 12. I've managed 20 for the last two, and feel really good with that!
-
Well, I won't be making my monthly goal but, with 2 runs left, I should have my best month since January!
-
Encouraged by the last couple of weeks, I'm going to throw 150 miles out there! This will be my second biggest month ever (I think).
-
I like to start by falling forward and sticking my leg out to catch myself. Then repeat for as long as you can.

I like to eat a chorizo sausage and two fried eggs in a fajita-size tortilla. It's very filling. I'm often good for up to 9 hours afterward.
-
I managed 25:25 at 197 pounds, which is >30% body fat on my frame. Weight isn't a great thing to compare because there are guys well over 200 pounds with a lower body fat % than me. My PR was down around 173 pounds (22:43), but I was only 7 seconds slower two months later, having gained 10 pounds. There's no linear…

I did not participate this month, but I've run more in 10 days than I did last month! I'll be back for August.
-
I hate running fast! I'll push hard during a race or do some track work in training for a shorter race, but I'd prefer to never run faster than a tempo run. I enjoy running at an easy pace.

In for the knowledge.

Haven't done it yet, but I'd imagine the graveyard 100 would have to be mostly flat: http://www.graveyard100.com/GY100.html

<--- I did one time. She was so scared! That's why she's hiding under my leg. You have to admit that she looks pretty good in a hoody, though, right?

I participated in a track meet style race last year. We unwittingly set up next to the highest-seeded runners. Every time I came back from racing or staying warm or whatever, my wife would be upset because of how she heard these guys talking about the other runners. She ended up having a terrible day listening to them talk…

I know this isn't a popular opinion here, but I call myself a "jogger." Jogging is just slow running, right? When I started back running a few years ago, I read that most runners get injured every year. I decided it was safer to be a jogger. Then, I learned about heart rate training and slowed my easy runs down to what…

I ran the Peachtree in 96 and 2000 and I don't remember any issues like this back then. I think I got a banana. When I finished my ultra last year, all but two of the volunteers had gone home (including the photographer). There were only 2 beers left! I drank one of them and left the other, because there were still 4…
