  • I enjoyed eating date balls on my long runs last year: dates, oat flour, chocolate powder, salt for electrolyte replacement and a little honey to keep them together.

  • Still on track for my goal of 105, but I dropped some miles relative to my plan. I cancelled my track work on Thursday after working late Wednesday night and having to meat my parents for an early lunch (celebrating their 43rd anniversary). Yesterday, I just did the 5K instead of the planned easy 6 miles. Today, I was on…
  • After failing to make it for 2 months in a row, I'm going to set my goal to 105 again. That will make it my biggest month of the year. I actually have 140 on my schedule for June, so hopefully I'll be hitting that!
  • I won't be making my goal for this month, but I just passed my total for February, making this my biggest month since January, with 1 or 2 more runs to do! I'm also averaging over 20 miles a week again, so I feel good about that.
  • It was a very real possibility for my 40-mile race last year. As it turns out, 4 people finished after me, but I would have felt the same way if I was the last finisher. My goal was to finish, so mission accomplished!
  • <--- I put 929 miles on my last pair. I think I got my money's worth.
  • Great idea! I had a NRV last year while doing battle with a large patch of ivy with my sling blade. In the past, I would have had to take a lot of breaks while doing this, but because of my increased aerobic fitness, I was able to swing that blade steadily for over an hour without getting my heart rate up much at all. And…
  • I made chocolate/oat/date balls for mine. I read somewhere how many calories I could digest per hour and sized them appropriately so that I could eat one every 15 minutes. I also did a sweat test to figure how much salt I would need and added that to the balls. I started eating a couple of hours in and just took them like…
  • Great job! Be careful, though, running can be addictive. :drinker:
  • About 20 years, I would say. I didn't like running until I learned proper form. I didn't love it until I learned to slow down, run most of my runs at an "easy" pace and increase my overall volume.
  • The wheels really came off the bus for me in April. This has been my lowest mileage month in at least a year, probably two. In fact, I only ran once in October and went farther than all my runs this month put together. It's time to get moving again, though, so I'm going to say 105 again for May!
  • That's a huge improvement! Good work! In my school, most of the faster guys were breaking 6 minutes, but none under 5! My senior year, I finally beat all of the girls in my section at the mile run, doing somewhere around 7:30. I was still the slowest guy in that class, though.
  • I was always the slowest guy in gym class and the slowest guy every time I tried out for sports. We had to run the mile in PE, and I was the slowest guy every single time. At my school, sports was very important and I was teased a lot and called names because of how slow I was.
  • I still can't get past him drinking a canned beer in 8 seconds. It would take me at least 30. Maybe it was lukewarm?
  • Slow down! Seriously, though, I'm not an expert but I would imagine you'd want to spend some time eating while running to get used to that and also spend as much time as you can on similar terrain. I know you're looking to be competitive, too, but my new rule after my first ultra is not to pass anyone that's obviously…
  • Sweet! I'm a little scared that someone went sub-20 with a stroller, however.
  • Marvel! Grew up on G.I. Joe, Transformers, Spidey, X-men, Avengers, Punisher and Daredevil. Recently, I'm more into following writers and artists (I love J.R. Jr.'s work).

  • Le sigh. Was it appropriate to name a continent that already had people living on it? You know, I might likely agree with you if there actually were people (besides some Canadians) that wanted to call themselves Americans but felt constrained because we already took the name. If you ask a Mexican where they're from?…
  • Thanks! I think I can fit 3 speed sessions in (Maybe Thursday, Sunday, Tuesday?).
  • Cyprian, my local store has the same policy as your store. Fortunately, my Altra Instinct 1.5s worked great because I took them on a 20-mile mud run the day I bought them and there was no way to make them look new again! I bought two replacements online because I couldn't beat the price, but I try and buy other things at…
  • As far as I know, there is only one country on those two continents in which the citizens refer to their country as "America." Do you really think it's appropriate to tell people in other countries what to call themselves and where they live? Besides, it's an abbreviation. It's short for (The United States of) America. Do…
  • I run and enjoy all my friends that do, too!
  • My plan right now is to shoot for mid-20s for the next few weeks, with 1 or 2 speed days thrown in. Then, up it to around 30 mpw for a few weeks and then try and maintain in the low to mid-30s for the 16 week training plan.
  • At work, we weigh all of our patients in pounds, and then immediately convert it to kilos, which we use for all the dosage calculations, etc. This seems so pointless to me. We never use the pounds for anything (except maybe when talking to the owners). I can't change the larger scale, but I set the smaller scale on kilos,…
  • I think it's easier to understand (for an American) if you compare it to feet and inches. We don't think of how many inches tall we are.
  • I stopped using mine because it was wildly inaccurate (like 30 to 50 bpm off). The user manual says something about having to push a reset button when you change the battery. My wife did it once, but it's way too small for my eyes and fingers. I just take my pulse when I stop for lights and at the end. I can count it while…
  • Great job! I love the trails!
  • I should add that I've gotten most of my information from Jack Daniels' Running Formula and that his charts don't start until around a 30-minute 5K, so that's another good indication of when you should start thinking about adding in the faster runs. At that point, your easy pace should be around 8:00 per kilometer. (edited…
  • "A good pace is one that you can maintain conversation with someone." This is great advice, but not just for until you can run 5 minutes non-stop. I would stick with this until you've been running 20+ miles per week (non-stop each run) for a while. Then, you will get more benefit from adding in faster workouts. As far as…
